17.01.2022 Hello everyone! It's Monday and our new initiative will feature staff from the University of South Australia Pharmacy school. The upcoming social media posts will showcase the various scopes of practice in pharmacy but from the point-of-view of our teaching staff. Today we have Jimit Gandhi who is a tutor at UniSA as well as a technical suites pharmacist at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. What made you choose to work in hospital pharmacy? When I first experienced hospital ph...armacy in the 3rd year field visits, it really opened my eyes in terms of how different the job profile of a hospital pharmacist was. I loved the significant clinical nature of the job and the collaborative approach to patient care working with other doctors, nurses and other health professionals. Its also a great feeling to be involved in a patients care from admission through to discharge. What other fields in pharmacy have you worked in, prior to working in the hospital? I had the experience of working in a community pharmacy for 3 years as a student pharmacist. What are some of the challenges that you face day-to-day in your career? In the Royal Adelaide Hospital, I work as a technical suites pharmacist. This requires me to work with many different stakeholders such as anaesthetists, surgeons, nurses and other pharmacists on projects and procedures to improve patients care in the theatre area. This can often be quite challenging to reach an agreement on a situation based on the differing opinions of other health professionals. What are some things that you believe students do not know about or some misconceptions about hospital pharmacy? Hospital pharmacy is a broad term encompassing many different services. It is not only clinical pharmacy you also have the opportunity to rotate through many different areas such as manufacturing, dispensary and clinical trials. Many students believe that clinical pharmacists only check drug charts/prescriptions, obtain medical histories and counsel patients. However, clinical pharmacists are also integrated into the medical team, which means they provide recommendations, advice and guidance on the safe and effective use of medications. What are the 3 pieces of advice that you would give to students interested in hospital pharmacy? Get involved in research early on hospital pharmacy is a great place to work with other health professionals on research projects. The ability to multi-task, prioritise your workload and having excellent communication skills are extremely important. These are the things a hospital seeks out when hiring new pharmacists. Network! Go to pharmacy seminars/conferences and meet other hospital pharmacists around Australia. Thank you Jimit for sharing this with us! Have a good week everyone. xoxo SAPSA love

17.01.2022 Hello everyone! Today we have Jack Janetzki sharing his insight on Pharmacy. He may be a familiar face in some of your Pharmacology tutorials or Pharmacy Practice counselling sessions! Tell us a little about what you do? I have a variety of roles in the pharmacy industry; I am a community pharmacist, consultant pharmacist and PhD candidate and tutor at the University of South Australia. My research involves computational modelling of adverse drug events.... What made you decide to involve yourself in consultant pharmacy? I wanted to become a consultant pharmacist as I wanted to spend more time with patients and help them to optimise their medications and lifestyle. I also wanted to expand my scope of practice outside the walls of a pharmacy. What are some of the challenges that you have faced in consultant pharmacy? Historically, the caps on home medicine reviews have been a barrier to developing a career in consultancy alone. However, new changes allowing cap increases and follow-up reviews has expanded the opportunities for consultant pharmacists to have a greater impact on patient care. What are the 3 pieces of advice that you would give to students considering to be part of consultant pharmacy? Get involved early and brush up on your clinical skills - the process for becoming accredited can be lengthy and requires diligence. You also need to ensure that you are up-to-date with current practice and reputable references to ensure that you are providing evidence-based recommendations. Thank you to Jack for sharing his story and have a good week everyone! xoxo SAPSA love

15.01.2022 Hello everyone! It's Monday which means it's time for SAPSA's graduates post. Today we have June Buxton who graduated from the University of South Australia in 2005. June has experience working in rural pharmacy and now works as a pharmacist in the hospital setting. What led you to work in rural pharmacy? I thought that I would try something different and adventurous. I have had a great... experience in rural Victoria when I was a student and it encouraged to try it out. What are some of the positive aspects you found in working in rural pharmacy? I have worked both in the community and hospital pharmacy in Mount Gambier. Both very different aspects of my pharmacy experience. In the community pharmacy, it allowed me to forge a closer bond with patients; you see regular patients returning because they were happy with the service you provided them the last time they visit. There is a lot of continuity in patient relationships in rural pharmacy. Your skills and professional maturity will develop quickly as you are often given opportunities to work more independently. In the hospital setting, you often get to work in small teams and form great working relationships with nurses, doctors and allied health professionals. I also have experience in providing domiciliary medication management reviews and residential medication management. There are plenty of opportunities in these areas for a pharmacist to develop their own practice. In my years working in Mount Gambier, local experienced pharmacists are always willing to provide mentorship to support the next generation of pharmacists. What are some of the challenges that you face in your day to day career? Accessing face-to-face educational opportunities can be limited and you may have to travel to metropolitan areas. But then again, there are plenty of online opportunities and resources available these days. What are three pieces of advice that you would give yourself if you could go back in time? Do not be afraid to put yourself out there to network with people as you never know where it might lead you; be open to challenges as it open doors to opportunities; get involved in the community - having support outside your work will help you with being resilient as well as developing friendships for life. Thank you June for sharing this with us! Have a great rest of the week everyone. xoxo SAPSA love

07.01.2022 IPSF CAMPAIGN 7/2 In collaboration with the International Pharmaceutical Science Federation (IPSF) for the campaign that was assigned by the National Australian Pharmacy Students association (NAPSA) to SAPSA, SAPSA would like to discuss about noncommunicable diseases . According to the World Health organization (WHO), cardiovascular diseases cause the highest numbers of death at 17.9 million people annually and this is followed by cancers, respiratory diseases and diabetes a...t 9 million people, 3.9 million and 1.6 million . This contributes to the annual deaths from noncommunicable diseases globally which is approximately 71% of the population . Risk factors for noncommunicable diseases fall into 2 categories modifiable behavioural risk factors and metabolic risk factors . Modified behavioural risk factors can include tobacco use , lack of physical activity , harmful consumption of alcohol and unhealthy diet . Metabolic risk factors can include being overweight or obese, hyperglycaemia, hyperlipidaemia and high blood pressure Socioeconomic status is a key factor as well in the rise of noncommunicable diseases as poverty-stricken households in low-income countries are vulnerable to such diseases . This is because the cost of treating noncommunicable diseases can strain the resources of low-income households, therefore influences the chances of eradicating the disease completely. Therefore, reducing noncommunicable diseases is not an overnight task and requires an integration of all sectors which not only includes health and finance but also education , agriculture and transport . It is equally vital for all these sectors to come together, plan and initiate a collaborative approach to decrease noncommunicable diseases . Management measures that are deemed critical include early detection as well as screening programs and when integrated early in primary health care settings, it can reduce the cost of treatment for the patient too . Hence, the take-home message would be that a collaborative approach is essential in managing the rising statistics of noncommunicable diseases . https://www.who.int/beat-ncds/about/en/ xoxo SAPSA love

07.01.2022 Good morning everyone! Today we have one of our staff member's at University of South Australia, Brian Chia, sharing his experience with us. Brian is completing his PhD as well as is a tutor at UniSA and a compounding pharmacist. What are the fields in pharmacy have you been involved or worked in? I consider myself extremely lucky to have experiences in numerous roles: community, academia and as a researching pharmacist. An area I hold close to my heart was the experience o...f working alongside other health professionals in managing patients suffering from Parkinsons Disease. Another area that I am interested in is compounding. Although I have completed my complex compounding accreditation, I am keen to develop additional skills in this area (i.e. sterile compounding). At the University, I teach various courses where my skills, experience and knowledge can be utilized: pharmacology, compounding, pharmacy practice and therapeutics. My research involves developing a novel class of antimicrobial agent by evaluating its mechanism of action which targets a specific protein in resistant pathogens. Recently, I was appointed as one of the Members of Evaluation Network for Therapeutic Guidelines: Antibiotic. This role involves providing clinical input in preparation for a guideline update, or functionality upgrades. What sparked your interest to be a compounding pharmacist? It was the interest I had working in a laboratory! I enjoy hands-on practical work: adding things, mixing stuff up, watching colours change etc. (thank god nothings blown up yet!). What are some things that students are not aware about compounding pharmacy? The world of compounding is NOT as what you think it is! Yes, compounding comes with additional responsibility, but the experience is unlike any other pharmacy field. It is a niche area which will redefine your problem-solving skills. What fascinates me most was the off-label use of different medications and how it is employed to treat various conditions! It made me appreciate medications even more. Furthermore, I get to work with cool equipment and compound amazing products which you will not see in day-to-day practice. What are the 3 pieces of advice that you would give to students interested in compounding pharmacy? My first advice to all students: never close doors (I was once a student, so I know what you are going through)! The skills you learn from compounding is transferable. Keep learning new techniques and never stop challenging yourself. Finally, right now we do not expect you to know everything, but we expect you to be reliable. Thank you for sharing this with us Brian and have a good holiday everyone! xoxo SAPSA love

06.01.2022 SAPSA would like to say all the best to everyone sitting for their exams! Please remember to be safe as well especially with the current health situation, take care and stay safe. xoxo SAPSA love

06.01.2022 Time for our Monday graduate's post! Today we have Jess Hsiao - intern at SA Pharmacy, sharing her journey with us. Jess was SAPSA's president in 2017 and NAPSA's president for the term of 2018/2019. What did you graduate from? I graduated from the Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science, Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) double degree. ... What have you been up to after graduating? Ive been doing my internship with SA Pharmacy (based at the Southern Adelaide Local Health Network). Ive also been involved with the PSA ECP working group and the FIP YPG (International Pharmaceutical Federation, Young Pharmacists Group) Media Team. What advice do you have for students? Take opportunities that present to you, or reach out and find those opportunities. As students you are still at that learning stage and having a variety of experience will help guide where you may want to go in the profession. What is the one thing you wish people told you before you graduated? Enjoy uni while youre still there before you get into intern year and beyond. You have the luxury of time at uni, you have breaks between classes, you can spend time with your friends, go out to eat (pre-COVID times), spend time at the library gossiping rather than studying - but make sure you take some time to mentally prepare yourself for the real world after graduation. Thank you Jess and all the best for your internship! xoxo SAPSA love

04.01.2022 Remember this familiar face? Raymond Truong was the recipient of the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia GOLD MEDAL AWARD for the Pharmacy degree this year! AN AMAZING ACCOMPLISHMENT! SAPSA has reached out to some familiar faces to provide an insight on their journey in pharmacy. Hope everyone has a great week ahead! What did you graduate from? My name is Raymond Truong and I graduated from the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) in 2019.... What have you been up to after graduating? Since graduating, I finished my work as a casual pharmacy assistant/pharmacy dispense technician and I am now completing my internship with Chemist Warehouse in South Australia. What advice do you have for students? Always be open in learning different perspectives from your peers, colleagues, tutors and pharmacists. Each individual has a slight variation in how they practice within pharmacy through their own work experience. By learning from each individual that you meet, you discover and explore what you like about each aspect and end up shaping your own style of how you would like to practice. What is the one thing you wish people told you before you graduated? Whilst I had been fortunate in gaining some clinical experience here and there, through being open to work experience, this is something I would have liked to have focused a little bit more on this aspect prior to looking for an internship. I would consider this important, as this allows the consolidation of the knowledge that is taught during the four years of university through clinical practice.

04.01.2022 It was great catching up with familiar faces at the PSA ECP Meeting for July. For every picture posted, Underworks Australia is donating essential clothing to those in need! #igiveasock Hope everyone had a great start to the new semester! xoxo SAPSA love

03.01.2022 HAPPY MONDAY! Today SAPSA has Caela Crane who was the SAPSA President in 2018, to share her story about her journey in Pharmacy. What program did you graduate from? I graduated from the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours)/ Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science.... What have you been up to after graduating? I am currently in the final stages of completing my internship at Newbery Chemists on the Yorke Peninsula. Here I have had the opportunity to actively participate and experience various aspects of community pharmacy from everyday dispensing and simple compounding to HMRs, Medschecks, cardiac Rehab presentations and so much more. This has also provided me with on-the-job training and supported me in establishing collaborative partnerships and networking with health professionals. Personally, I have enjoyed the fresh country air, environment and culture, making several new acquaintances. What advice do you have student? The best advice that I can offer is to embrace the opportunities offered by the Uni, study hard, attend all learning opportunities and become involved in the social communities, whether that be a sporting club, volunteer programs or SAPSA, theres so much to get involved in and numerous opportunities to meet new people. Uni can certainly be stressful at times but surrounding yourself and building a network of students going through the same experiences is extremely beneficial. Another heads up would be to look for a job in pharmacy; hospital or community. Having hands on experience is so beneficial throughout your Uni degree and will make the transition from pharmacy student to intern pharmacist that much smoother. The final piece of advice I can give is to try everything pharmacy has to offer. By this I mean, spending time in rural pharmacy, hospital/community pharmacy. There is so much out there and you wont know what you enjoy until you try it. If it wasnt for my 4th year placement in a rural area, I would never have seen myself where I am today. Thank you Caela for the helpful advice and all the best for your future. Have a great week everbody! xoxo SAPSA love

02.01.2022 The PSA are members of a consortium, led by NPS MedicineWise, and including seven other member organisations which have been engaged by the Australian Government Department of Health to develop and implement a three-year program to optimise the use of biological disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (bDMARDs) (the Value in Prescribing Program: bDMARDs). The program aims to support best practice, improve health outcomes and achieve efficiencies for the PBS. Gaining an underst...anding of quality use of medicines (QUM) issues and current practice experiences of pharmacists regarding the use of biologicals and biosimilars for gastroenterological and dermatological conditions in the community is of importance, so it would be great if you could spare some time in your day to fill out this survey. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/vipdmards Your responses will help us to develop high quality and relevant CPD education for the PSA members. All responses will be kept secure and confidential. No findings that could identify you or your workplace will be reported or published. In addition to that, the university has updated news about campus access and examinations which is on the UniSA website. The SA Health website is always being updated and a good resource to stay abreast with the latest news. In these trying times, seek help if you need to. You are not alone, we're in this together. Look after each other; give your family or friends a call and stay in touch. We'll get through this! Take care and stay safe. xoxo SAPSA love
