25.01.2022 New writing and research on contemporary art is to be celebrated and shared. Between 2016-19, @mumamonash commissioned short-form texts by artists, art historians and curators on 100 works from the @monashuniversity Collection, with the aim of opening the Collection up to a broad range of voices and perspectives. We will be sharing a few texts on works by gallery artists, starting with an excerpt from Justin Clemens text on @lou_hubbard_art work EYE OPS. . Full text via li...nk in Profile . The title of this work, EYE OPS, a near-homophone for Cyclops, not to mention Psy-Ops, places Hubbard in the position of a surgeon. Its a sinister joke. What is an eye surgeon? Somebody who operates on your eyeballs. What is an artist?Somebody who operates on your eyeballs. The identification is immediate and parodic, the work enchanting and grotesque. Still, what sort of artist cuts up the very organ with which you look at art? In an essay titled The work of art in the age of its technological reproducibility, German-Jewish critic Walter Benjamin comments that: Magician and surgeon compare to painter and cameraman. The painter maintains in his work a natural distance from reality, whereas the cinematographer penetrates deeply into its tissue. For Benjamin, the surgeon-camera-operator did the greater work in a world saturated with technology, just as Hubbard literally picks the eyes out of contemporary art. . 20.01.2022 TONY GARIFALAKIS & SANJA PAHOKI in Hope Dies Last: Art at the End of Optimism, @gertrudecontemporary (to 9 Nov) & #margaretlawrencegallery @vca_mcm (18 Oct-14 Nov), curated by @markfeary, part of @melbfestival . Mortality, extinction, suffering and failure are the fuel driving this challenging and peculiar exhibition of curated works, presented across two sites. This exhibition addresses some of the most difficult yet urgent questions of our time, responding to the dark... hours that wait with gallows humour, the condemneds resignation and the camaraderie of the trenches. Hope Dies Last will be one of the most depressing events of the year, an exhibition that will riddle us with sadness, and likely leave us more pessimistic than we have ever been before. For the 2019 edition of the Prize, Australian artists were called to respond to the theme Anthropocene. Judges Charlotte Day, director @mumamonash, Ryan Johnston, director @buxton_contemporary and Penny Teale, curator of @bunjil_place Gallery, commented that Christensens painting Hang in there, rende...rs a collision of imagery, scale and painterly planes in a masterfully cohesive fashion, and that it reminds us that while life is fleeting and fragile there is hope in the midst of despair. 15.01.2022 The Dark Mirror opens tonight Thur 6 Feb, 6-8pm . Chantal Faust, Lou Hubbard, Hayley Millar-Baker, Mark Rodda, David Thomas, Christian Thompson & Julie Vinci. .... The Dark Mirror features work that is at once reflexive, reflective, apocalyptic. Engaging strategies of concealment, revelation, unmasking and subversion, the exhibition considers the idea of post-identity in our post-truth world but largely via the domestic and the personal. As this year marks the 250th anniversary of James Cooks first voyage to Australia and the Pacific, the exhibition seeks also to provide a series of counter narratives to the Cook landing and colonisation histories. . . . 10.01.2022 KATE DAW (1965-2020) We are mourning the loss of Kate Daw. Artist, teacher, friend, mentor, colleague, partner, mother, daughter and sister... Kate is so many things to so many people. She is deeply loved and will be deeply missed.... We launched Sarah Scout Presents with Kates exhibition The Blue Hour in 2009, and we have had the pleasure and privilege of working alongside Kate long before that time, and many times since. Kates ongoing project Art, work, life both describes her critical concerns and acknowledges the impossibility of separating them, just as Kate herself continued to embrace and embody the complexities of being an artist, a woman in the world. She did this with rigour, with generosity, with grace, with intelligence and with humour, and were all better for knowing and working with her. Of course, words have always been so important to Kate, and so integral to her work. In a way she used them like paint, and she always knew which ones to use, and when. Yet, right now the words are failing us We extend our love to Kates friends, to her community to all her communities, for she was part of so many peoples lives but most of all we send our deepest and most heartfelt love and sympathy to her family, especially to Robert, Theo and Camille Hassan. Hours: Wed-Sat 12-5pm - Fidelities is a series of solo projects by artists @kez__hughes, @davidsjolly and @siennavanrossum. Fidelity can be described as the degree of exactness with which something is copied or reproduced, and certainly these three artists each pledge a certain degree of fidelity, or truth, to subject matter with their relationship to realist painting. However, in each case, theit paintings are based on photographs, which of course bear their own relationship to truth, and choices are made by the artists that tell half a story, or none at all. . 05.01.2022 Christian Thompson in Oracles (with Pati Solomona Tyrell) is now open @citygallerywellington, until 2 Aug. Working across performance, photography and video, both artists channel historical spirits and consequences through masquerade. Included in Oracles is Thompsons Enchantments series (2018). In Letter to Ferdinand von Mueller, the artist appears as an androgynous otherworldly spirit, with luridly dyed and tousled hair, wearing a period night shirt, holding tiny masks o...f now-obscure Victorian-period German colonists of Australia, with excised eyes. The works are addressed not to us, but are 'letters' to them. Thompson features in much of his performative self-portraits, constructing his photographic works in the way that he would make a sculpture. He resists seeing these works as straight-forward self-portraiture, which would imply: 'that it's about capturing some element of my own self-representation, and that's not really the case.... 04.01.2022 KEZ HUGHES - in Fidelities Gallery open today 12-5pm, exhibition continues until 26 Oct . Focusing on the art community in which she is embedded, Kez Hughes makes art that seems to be about art; exquisitely-rendered realist paintings that document exhibitions of her peers. Hughess paintings of paintings, sculptures, videos or installations by other artists certainly engage issues of authenticity and authorship as well as provide commentary on our various cultural e...cologies but they also comprise a curatorial exercise in subjectivity and permission. The exhibition is the first commercial showing of Creeks paintings since 1991. The exhibition comprises a suite of new large-scale paintings that embody Creeks ongoing intere...st in issues of history, politics, identity and the everyday, and the connections between these distinct realms and registers. Kate Daws exhibition engaged with the complex relationships we have with the world of work and the spaces in which we engage in labour and creativity. Central to the exhibition was Daws role as an artist and teacher. Much of the exhi...bited work revolved around the ways women work and talk together; the trust involved in working with a teenager she had been teaching to draw (the Grace of the shows title), as well as the conversations that Daw had shared with young female art students about their relationship to the art world and their own artistic ambitions. . #katedaw #lovework #showmegrace #sarahscoutpresents #vca #thresholds #supportartists See more

01.01.2022 FIONA ABICARE & SALLY SMART in A Stitch in Time to 16 Feb 2020 . .... . A Stitch in Time brings together the work of seven contemporary Australian artists, each working across a broad range of media from painting, sculpture and printmaking, to design and installation. These artists are unified by a shared interest in working with an array of traditionally craft-related techniques. Predominantly classified as an inferior art in Western history, the elevation of craft as a high art and the recognition of women artists has been inextricably linked. Today, craft practices sit resolutely within contemporary art, imbued with consequential cultural and political power. A Stitch in Time presents artists who skilfully enfold a myriad of techniques and processes into works of profound potency. .
