25.01.2022 Who jumped it best?? vs Thanks to Equestrian SA Eventing for a fantastic days training at Cromwell Park! So great to get Balou Jeanz and Cassage ou...t to school some tricky cross country style lines with the much appreciated help of fellow squad riders eyes on the ground. Love the collaborative camaraderie of these days as well as the opportunity to learn both by riding and observing Bit Bank Australia- For Horse Bits Chaballo - European Equestrian Gear Meadows Veterinary Centre - Adelaide Hills Vetsense Sunburst Equestrian Australia
25.01.2022 Sooooo wonderful to be Eventing again and a bonus to pick up two ribbons for two very special youngsters making their competitive debuts! Both babies not putt...ing a hoof wrong all weekend to finish on their respectable dressage scores (who knew I could actually FOD!) Still a little weak and wobbly at only 4 and 5 years old, but I could almost believe they’ve both done this Eventing thing in a past life they took to it all so well Matilda Downs Another Sarah finished in a tidy 3rd place, credit to owner Bruce Buswell for spotting this girls talent in a short Facebook video and thanks to him for the honour of producing her Younger stable mate Casallia S followed marginally behind in 4th; plain she may be but always seeking to please from day one under saddle (which was only at the beginning of this year!!) Balou Jeanz and Cassage S also tagged along on day one to get a practice dressage test under their belts, both a bit feisty and fresh back in a ring after so long. Everything crossed they might get a full start in some higher level Eventing before the end of the year Immense thanks to the superhero team behind Canoe Tree Horse Trials for putting on an always fabulous event and putting the misery of covid behind us. Melissa Richardson-Yates and Tracey Leigh and to Equestrian SA Eventing committee for doing everything possible to support the return of the sport Biggest thanks of all to super-super hero Linda Clark...there’s no emoji to summarise all you do!!! Bit Bank Australia- For Horse Bits-thanks for helping find the perfect bits for each of these unique youngsters Chaballo - European Equestrian Gear thanks for my new cool blue Laguso jacket Meadows Veterinary Centre thanks for keeping all the horses competition healthy Vetsense thanks for a young horses first event magic potion- Nervaid Sunburst Equestrian Australia thanks for the perfect training facilities to help youngsters feel like old pros
22.01.2022 Matilda Downs Montreal Outstanding filly bred to jump and event. From a family of top performers and prolific producers, her pedigree is littered with the bigge...st names in the sport. Already showing the bold, independent attitude of her mother and the elegant athleticism of her father, she is destined to follow her family into stardom Her mother herself evented to CCI4*s level and is also a winner at CCI3*S and top ten place getter at both Adelaide and Melbourne International CCI3*L. An out and out jumping machine, she is the bravest, boldest most straightforward crosscountry ride Ive ever had. Bred from a thoroughbred sire crossed with the prolific Australian jumping stallion Daley K who has produced numerous jumpers and eventers including Rio Olympic medalist ( https://www.horsemagazine.com/thm/2014/10/daley-k/ ) Her father is the exciting young stallion Yalambis Messiah, bred at Yalambi Farm and now 4 years old commencing his career with Riverwood Lodge. 18.01.2022 Catching up on recent events in mini-lockdown... Matilda Downs Another Sarah’s last run of her debut year ....
17.01.2022 I’m not a showjumper, but....did get showjumping cards and go showjumping two weekend in a row Great to keep an eye in on the bigger fences with no 3/4* event...s about and surprisingly pick up the odd placings as well! Cassage S showed all her class and none of her youth at Waikerie, giving me consistent clear rounds in our first attempts at official 1.20m and placing 4th when we elected to jump off Balou Jeanz waited to show his form at Mallala the following week where we managed to not get time faults in the first round (which we often do in Eventing jumping) but also take out a win in the 1.20m and 4th in the 1.30 Thanks to everyone who lent me much needed assistance over both shows! Rachelle Verma, Adam Crouch, Chloe Wedd, Wendy Di Schaeffer, James Deacon, Linda Clark Good times despite my apprehension, I’m looking forward to making use of those showjumping cards and hitting a few more shows over the next few months Cannot wait to get back to the real Eventing deal this weekend though, with the youngest guns (including Matilda Downs Warmblood Stud’s ) heading to Monarto for their second competitive outing Bit Bank Australia- For Horse Bits - Jeanz loving his new hardware (NS Waterford Gag) Chaballo - European Equestrian Gear - Me loving my new software (Laguso jacket and shirt) Meadows Veterinary Centre Vetsense Sunburst Equestrian Bush Pony Media
17.01.2022 Praise be to committee members, all volunteers and sponsors who’s efforts made a 2020 Monarto Horse Trials-EA possible I’m particularly proud of Casallia S ...finishing 2nd in her second ever event and feeling like she’s done it all before in a past life. Hard to believe she was passed over by a number of potential riders/homes as a 3yo before starting her career with me this year. I’m thinking I might have to change her allocated emoji () as she is proving herself to be so much more than the plain Jane she might at first appear. She will now enjoy a well earned spell until she turns 5 next February So glad I entered Cassage S in the 2.5* at the last minute after last weeks rain, as the ground was just perfect for her to canter around her first XC since October 2019. She’s lost none of her zest for it, toying with both the XC and SJ tracks as well prancing her way through the dressage phase. Finishing 2nd to Wendy Schaeffer-Macdonald in a similar position, I think we’re both grateful for the chance to run our two ahead of Naracoorte State Champs 3* Matilda Downs Warmblood Stud Another Sarah showed huge improvements in all phases from her first Eventing attempt only weeks ago, which bodes incredibly well for an exciting future. Barring a green moment of hesitation atop a bank (ooh look there’s a puddle down there!) she felt like she’s both getting to know and love her Eventing job. Owner Bruce Buswell sure can pick a diamond in the rough as well as breed his own! Massive thanks Bruce for all your support and for trusting me with such special equine athletes! Cannot wait for borders to open so you can come enjoy watching her in person (and so I might come up there and check out all the future starts in your paddocks ) Thanks sooooo much to slave-for-the-weekend Andrew Everest and slave-for-life Linda Clark for making it possible for me to ride all three wonder-mares this weekend!!! 14.01.2022 Matilda Downs Meinhard Striking colt, born December 2020, bred to excel in the showjumping ring and also light enough to event. An uphill, athletic and truly c...orrect foal already showing scope and power in his paces. From a family of top performers and prolific producers. Calido1 has produced numerous world renown progeny with proven success at Olympic and championship level. ( https://www.horsemagazine.com/thm/2010/08/calido-i/ ) Heida combines this prestigious jumping blood with the athleticism and lightness of the thoroughbred, giving Meinhard all the ingredients to excel Matilda Downs Meinhard (pronounced mine-hart, meaning brave and strong) is already showing an amenable temperament and powerful, uphill movement. 10.01.2022 Thank you Hills and Barossa Horse Trials a fantastic day at your combined training competition! Sooo appreciate the chance to ride the star class level dressage... tests and showjumping tracks!! Cassage S was still feeling a little flat after her crosscountry run the week before, but still managed to win the 3* CT and pop her first 125cm track Balou Jeanz is gradually improving his 4* dressage score and loving his showjumping more and more, placing in the 130cm and winning the 4*CT (noone ask how many were in the class ) Thanks to the entire H&B committee, particularly Jess Steel who was organising and riding AND found herself slaving for me Also always to Linda Clark who must surely be missing her relaxing weekend of corona lockdown ! 07.01.2022 What an awesome bunch of goodies from EQ Saddleworld to brighten up the winter wardrobe! Thanks so much for supporting Melbourne International 3 Day Event in th...eir Virtual Young Event horse competition it certainly provides us riders some much needed motivation during this weird time and helped keep us connected!! Primary prize winner was Bruce Buswell’s eye catching 5year old Matilda Downs Another Sarah (sire Another Warrior, dam by Vivant) Huge thanks to Bruce for having me produce his lovely young girl! (Please ignore my atrocious lower leg position in the picture...the ping clearly caught me by surprise I’m lucky it was a young horse not a rider competition! )
04.01.2022 My Christmas has come early and I hit the Kris Kringle jackpot! My Secret Santa must be the true Saint Nick himself I’m over the moon to have received this wonderful gift...an analysis and critique of my Wallaby Hill CCI4*L crosscountry round by none other than Lucinda Green and Lissa Green!!! I love this horse to bits, but our style together has regularly brought negative and derogatory backlash which often gets me down. So I’m immensely chuffed to hear some really positiv...e comments from these Queens of Eventing as well as some useful, constructive advice to work on for the future. (Watch video with sound on) Being on Badminton 2022 Thaaaaank yoouuuu so much to Lucinda and Lissa for taking the time to watch us and for your amazing feedback I hugely value the opinions and observations of these two incredible horsewomen particularly because they understand the added challenge of being a small lady rider partnered with a big, strong, bold horse, and that of working with the quirks of the horse you have...we can’t all be mounted on flash easy-to-ride 5* winning machines (not that Id swap him ) And thaaank yooou to my special Secret Santa, and the incredible folks at EquiRatings Eventing Podcast not only incredible business initiatives that do so much to revolutionise and drive Eventing sport, but also a wonderfully community of kind and passionate people I hope everyone gets involved in their Willberry Christmas Sim Event, raising money for a vital charity but also entertaining Eventing Fans by pitting all-time Eventing greats against each other in virtual competition (including Lucinda with her Badminton winner Regal Realm!) I’m lucky December 2020 has made up for the crappy 11 months than came before, thank you to all the people who made it so
04.01.2022 Thanks Equestrian SA Eventing and fellow squad riders for a wonderful days training at picture-perfect Cromwell Park. The two squad horses were buzzing and keen... to be out in a big ring again - Balou Jeanz doing it all in his own style as always but no pictures on the scoreboard! Cassage S feeling confident and ever sassy with the bigger fences. Still only 7years old but feeling keen for 3* whenever we get back to competitions. And the tag-along-youngster Casallia S may be a plain-Jane but she’s showing a wonderful attitude, keen to please and taking trickier lines all in her stride. Looking forward to a first Eventing start on this 4 year old soooooon! Thanks Pryde's EasiFeed for the swanky new Squad shirts ! 04.01.2022 Spending what should have been the first day of Australian International 3 Day Event reminiscing about the five amazing horses I’ve had the privilege of riding ...through the Adelaide city parklands.... Red Sun Rising went from a green broken 4yo then took me from pony club to my first Adelaide International. If only I’d known what I had when I had her, and if only I’d not lost her so soon Kirby Park Irish Consort the very first in my little bay mare collection, and the first I managed to produce from yearling to 4*. She’s now loving life with young rider Hannah Bird Bellhaven Cardentice the super pony of Deborah Heindl’s. Such fun to turn him from showjumper to 4* eventer. He also has found a fabulous young partner in Ellie Gough Aremdale Donn Piatt, the cross country master whom I’ve had the honour of campaign for both Emily Susan Budich and Bruce Buswell of Matilda Downs Warmblood Stud. She is currently expecting her first foal who is sure to be a ripper! And the King in the South himself, Balou Jeanz, who carted me around the Adelaide 3* and 4*s before also towing me around my first 5*, and at barely 9 years old! Shame to then loose the majority of his 9th year to covid cancelations, but he’s still such a young gun at the level and I look forward to many more 4/5* adventures with him in the future! Cannot believe how lucky I am to have not only partnered so many lovely horses, but to have participated in the iconic and unique event that is the Australian International Three Day Event. Thanks to the committee and of course the late Gillian Rolton for making so wonderful year after year. 04.01.2022 Very grateful to Equestrian SA Eventing for organising these riders-helping-riders sessions at Cromwell Park while we’ve been unable to get squad coaches into... the state! To hear observations and feedback from fellow squad riders over course style lines at these excellent facilities has kept me both motivated and progressing (I hope ) I’m pretty sure Cassage S aka Pixie Pony believes her tail swish is vital to ensure a clean jump And Balou Jeanz aka King in the South may do it all in his own non-textbook style, but I’d prefer to do it that way than not at all! Thanks Heather Ford and Abby Pinter for the vids!! 03.01.2022 Spending what should have been Melbourne International 3 Day Event looking back at fond memories of this wonderful event. Particularly these two incredibly diff...erent horses; one little, nippy and ultra careful, the other big, bold with a style of his own. Neither round is perfect - Im certainly not known for being pretty - but both are highlights of each horses’ career and mine. When feeling down, lost and useless, always helpful to remind oneself of treasured joys and achievements. KP Irish Consort in 2016 popping around the CCI3*L (then called CCI2*) to finish 4th, my first major international placing. The first little bay mare I produced myself from a pre-broken youngster to eventual 4*, she is still enjoying Eventing life now with a talented young rider. LV Balou Jeanz as an 8 year old last year charging around the CCI4*L to finish 10th despite our very rough-around-the-edges dressage, and earn his qualification for Adelaide 5* (where he went on to finish 12th and highest placed South Australian as a barely 9year old) Hoping this still-young chap will help me fulfil yet more of my lifelong dreams Looking forward to heading back to this, one of my favourite events, in 2021 and the years after. 03.01.2022 A painful year, an exhausting week, but totally worth it all for the incredible 16ish minutes spent on cross country with these two at Wallaby Hill I have nev...er made the optimum time at star-class level before, and was thrilled to finally manage it not only once but twice last Saturday Balou Jeanz in the CCI4*L put up his best performance to date in the dressage ring, and followed it up with a smooth and ridable crosscountry round to come through the finish flags under time ...something I never thought we’d achieve together! A shame we couldn’t finish on our dressage score, pulling a couple of rails in the showjumping is unusual for him but not overly surprising given the circumstances. Gale-force winds forced the showjumping indoors, which is a significant weakness of ours I’m aware of but hadn’t prepared to face this time out. However, we still managed to finish 7th behind a string of veteran olympians on European imports in the only 2020 CCI4*L in the country. Still so young with much improvement yet to go, Jeanz yet retains his title of King in the South (in my opinion ) Cassage S even younger and even less experienced gave me just as much hope for the future! In her international debut and only her second attempt at 3*S, she performed a respectable but tense test in an atmosphere unlike any she’d experienced before but absolutely flew around the crosscountry clear and under time as though she had twice the miles under her belt Her greenness showed in the showjumping however when, like jeanz, she balked slightly in the indoor arena to pull a rail and drop just out of the placings but still finished in the top ten in 8th. Disappointing but all signs point to incredibly exciting things in little pixie pony’s future! None of it would have been possible without the help over the weekend from acquired slave Heather Ford (thaaank youuu and sorry for working you into the ground!) Thanks also to Margot Scott who dove into the deep end getting herself saturated in the crosscountry cool down to help my horses recover Thanks to Wendy and Di Schaeffer for having me and my steeds on board your truck and for all the support in advance of and during the week. Likewise Steph and Hilary Hann, lovey to enjoy camaraderie and friendship at the biggest events in the country once more. And to the amazing Alexandra Townsend and her team at Wallaby Hill, thank you for having us on your amazing property, persevering though a ridiculous year, giving riders across the country something to aim for and therefore helping us survive the drama of 2020! You guys made my year Likewise to these awesome people and businesses who’ve continued to support me despite the hardships they themselves have endured this year Bit Bank Australia- For Horse Bits Chaballo - European Equestrian Gear Meadows Veterinary Centre Vetsense Sunburst Equestrian Australia Matilda Downs Warmblood Stud And of course Linda Clark, for whom there are not enough words of thanks but mainly thanks for taking care of and managing to not murder my horribly behaved dog in my absence sorry for that and all other burdens lumped upon you! 02.01.2022 Just the King and I at Adelaide Hills Show Jumping Club Inc at their stunning Wirrina Cove show this weekend. Full credit and thanks to the organisers and spons...ors for getting this wonderful show off the ground in a short space of time! Balou Jeanz held his own for 1st in the open 1.20m and 2nd in the open 1.30m. Many horses looked uncomfortable in the deep going but Jeanz seemed to cope, giving me hope that we could survive a hypothetical UK Eventing campaign one day () My only grievance; my appallingly weak position! If anyone can photoshop my lower leg to where it should be please let me know! Sharing the pics regardless only because the horse deserves it Thank you for the spontaneous help Rachelle Verma and Chloe Wedd making warm ups possible!
