19.01.2022 It really is time for women to stand up and say it’s enough. Support people and the use of water in labour and birth are very very basic human rights. Go over t...o RANZCOGs instagram page and have your say about their statement on the use of water in labour. We can go to a pub, a restaurant, a large shopping centre. We can have 100 people at weddings and funerals, but we can only have 1 support person during labour and birth. We can go to aqua aerobics classes, nurses can help shower the elderly and post op patients, but women can’t have a shower or bath during labour and birth. It’s fucking ridiculous and it’s time to stop eroding the basic rights of pregnant and birthing women. If there’s one good thing to come from this, it’s that home really is the safest and most appropriate place for women without risk factors to have their babies. Hospitals are for sick people. 13.01.2022 Birth trauma encompasses so much more than physical injury or illness. Trauma is a subjective experience that is both multifaceted and complex. We know that when people are supported, heard, respected and feel in control of their bodies and choices, they can walk away from the most difficult, unexpected experiences without feeling inherently ‘traumatized’. Tune in to tomorrow’s live panel for some deep discussion on birth trauma and how we can advocate for change in today...’s maternity system. 12.01.2022 Hi everyone and welcome to all my new followers I thought it was about time I jump online and explain my radio silence over these past couple of weeks. I had been feeling pressure and exhaustion building for some time but had not been taking good care of myself and mostly ignoring the signs from my body telling me to slow down. In the end my body made me slow down (as they often do) by becoming really unwell. I have reflected on this and decided to take a couple of week...s away from the MIC* and reeeeeeally strip back on other non-essential commitments in order to nourish my body and mind so that I can get back to wholly supporting others With this week being Birth Trauma Awareness Week though, I will be a bit more present online, sharing bits and pieces that I think are important and accounts/organizations that are worth following in the birth trauma space. Please know I am still taking bookings for birth debriefs, birth trauma counselling and perinatal counselling via zoom or telephone via my website (link in bio). Pic of me having a nice relaxing @blissful.herbs soak *if you don’t know what the MIC is head on over to @doctor_midwife but be prepared to participate #birthtrauma #birthtraumaawarenessweek #maternalmentalhealth #birthtraumarecovery #birthtraumaawareness #postpartumdepression #postpartum #birth #vbac #hbac #selfcare See more

09.01.2022 The decolonisation of birth - learning from our First Nations people Today on the show I speak to Aboriginal Australian and Wiradjuri and Ngemba/Wayilwan woman ...Fleur Magick Dennis. Fleur is Mum to 4 children - 3 of whom she birthed on country - or as Fleur explains to me in our discussion the term she prefers is birthing as country. Her births sound amazing - almost idyllic and dream like. She talks about one birth and how she birthed outside by the river, in-between the gorges - truely magic. Fleur is incredibly insightful, eloquent and really gave me so much understanding of the Aboriginal culture surrounding birth. The spiritual teachings and preparations she talks about are really interesting and totally marry up with the science of birth - which is not surprising to me at all. Really we all have so much to learn from our first nations people and I am incredibly glad that Fleur agreed to come on the show and share her wisdom. She talks about the ceremonies for her placentas and her newborn babies that she did, also about birth and death being intrinsically linked and women’s business. She also talks about the fear from indigenous and non indigenous people about her decision to birth out bush. She explains to me about how up until the 60’s Aboriginal women weren’t even allowed to birth in hospitals (something I did not know) and how some family thought what she was doing birthing out in the bush was counterproductive to what they had fought for. Australia’s history with our indigenous people is unfortunately very dark and often hidden but Fleur’s work is really helping open up a lot of peoples eyes. Lastly she suggests - for those of us in a privileged position how we can help our indigenous sisters. I came away from this chat so inspired and wanting to know so much more - so I will have to have her back! Thank you Fleur. Listen here: ITunes: https://podcasts.apple.com//podcast/the-reneg/id1510707553 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/episode/6oG5xqiOKu3nOcAlIcDCqF About Fleur - Fleur Magick Dennis is a Wiradjuri and Ngemba/Wayilwan woman and a mother of four boys. Fleur birthed three out of her four sons in the bush as sacred Aboriginal cultural births. Fleur and her mother & female family members undertook women’s business ceremonies in Country for each of her sons. Planning to wing-it all the way? Tick tock! You could approach your labour and birth a lot more purposefully and methodically- with a little prep - and feel totally confident and in c...ontrol! There's only ONE DAY left till we kick off our 5 Day Getting Ready for Labour Challenge - grab a ticket now (don't wait till Sunday night ) Link in bio. Repost @carmen.bridgewater Raise your hand if you can feel the intensity in this photo One of my favorite things to capture is the shapes a belly takes on during a wave (or contraction.) A contraction is when the uterine muscles tense up and relax in intervals, moving a baby down and out of the birth canal.
