24.01.2022 Thanks VADEA for such a thorough critique! I agree with your findings & will be following your guidance regarding feedback to ACARA. We must act!
24.01.2022 Thank you, Visual Arts teachers! | Since launching a little over a month ago, I have sent out The Frames resource to a bunch of schools across NSW! | Half of my stock has now sold! | I am so excited that this little blue box now sits in classrooms all over the state! | Thank you for supporting this venture & I hope you are having fun with your new flashcards! #theframes #educationresource #learningresource #visualarts #visualartseducation #visarted #safo #visualartsteacher #visualartsstudents #arteducation #australia #nesa #syllabuscontentarea #subjectiveframe #structuralframe #culturalframe #postmodernframe #ideasforteaching #flashcards #playingcards #literacy #skilldevelopment #studentasartist #studentascritic #flexiblelearning #adaptableideas #kickstarteractivities
24.01.2022 Dear VA HSC Teachers, As promised I have recorded some video lectures here for your use. I hope that some of this may be helpful for your students who may be studying remotely. I know you and your students will forgive my low-fi recording/editing skills - but this is the best I could do given the circumstances! ... These lectures are designed to reinforce what you have already been doing in the classroom and by no means signals 'everything you need to know about the HSC Written Exam' - but perhaps they will serve as 'starting points' for ways to prepare for the exam. Best wishes to you and your students during this complicated time, Sarah Lecture 1: Getting Organised https://echo360.org.au//9c078598-0445-4811-bba3-651/public Lecture 2: Revision: The Content Areas https://echo360.org.au//ac057e7e-9866-4963-8cf8-df6/public Lecture 3: Upskilling Improving Written Skills https://echo360.org.au//152fab6a-0683-446b-9cd6-2d4/public Lecture 4: Navigating the Written Exam Paper https://echo360.org.au//d4e26c36-21f9-46ca-a24e-163/public Lecture 5: Navigating Section II https://echo360.org.au//17f95fdc-261f-4511-9181-665/public Lecture 6: Navigating Section I https://echo360.org.au//6adf37a6-a8e2-4f39-a98d-270/public
23.01.2022 Resourcing never ends! One of the things I love most about teaching is - creating resources! Over the past few years, I have begun to create a 'house style' with my handouts* / curriculum documents and this is something I want to explore next year with my new ACU students (anyone else out there have a 'house style'?). Speaking of ACU: as Semester 2 comes to a close, I wanted to thank these future-Visual Arts teachers for a wonderful 2020! They have pivoted from face-to-face to online learning with great professionalism and I am excited for them as they finalise their studies and head off into the 'real world' as Visual Arts teachers. Thank you, students! *A series of resources I am working on for 2021 showcasing how to develop activities using the frames and the conceptual framework for Stage 4.
22.01.2022 Students at play! | A great way to test knowledge prior to the HSC Trial Exam! | With over half of my stock already gone - be sure to get your hands on my last stash of The Frames flashcards! . . .... #theframes #educationresource #learningresource #visualarts #visualartseducation #visarted #safo #visualartsteacher #visualartsstudents #arteducation #australia #nesa #syllabuscontentarea #subjectiveframe #structuralframe #culturalframe #postmodernframe #ideasforteaching #flashcards #playingcards #literacy #skilldevelopment #studentasartist #studentascritic #flexiblelearning #adaptableideas #kickstarteractivities #teacherssupportingteachers
19.01.2022 This week’s A.I.R program at GIHS has come to an end! I’ve had such a wonderful week working with Yr10 students on this collaborative painting. Students will continue to work on this over the next few weeks and then it will be installed on a wall in the school! The brief: to explore the local environment (school, town, region) using signs and symbols. A special thanks to GIHS VA teacher Abi Sparks for the invitation!
17.01.2022 A.I.R - ready, set, go!
17.01.2022 Thanks to the wonderful Louisa Cunningham for inviting me to work with her and her Year 12 VA students last week. Students presented initial ideas for their BOW to the class - and as a panel, Louisa and I were able to provide instant feedback on how students may capitalise on their initial experiments. Louisa prepared an excellent task notification booklet for students that scaffolded their artmaking exploration. I am a big fan of scheduling this kind of a crit session in T4 (either as a formal or informal assessment) - as it's an opportunity for students to set goals for the summer holidays! Speaking of which, happy holidays to you all!
15.01.2022 Artists-at-work: we’ve had some fab sessions in the studio this week at GIHS - painting & hot chips (courtesy of VA teacher Ms Abi Sparks)!
14.01.2022 Q. How can I make use of The Frames flashcards in my classroom? | A. This box set has been deliberately designed as an open-ended resource to allow teachers to do what they do best - tailor learning materials to suit the needs of their students! | Here are some kickstarter activities to spark further ideas for the classroom! | How do you use your frames cards? #theframes #educationresource #learningresource #visualarts #visualartseducation #visarted #safo #visualartsteacher #visualartsstudents #arteducation #australia #nesa #syllabuscontentarea #subjectiveframe #structuralframe #culturalframe #postmodernframe #ideasforteaching #flashcards #playingcards #literacy #skilldevelopment #studentasartist #studentascritic #flexiblelearning #adaptableideas #kickstarteractivities #teacherssupportingteachers
13.01.2022 How delightful to see these portraits spring up on Instagram from Fairvale HS’s Diverse Learning class! These joyful teacher portraits were exhibited last week & I adore them! I’m always thrilled to see students inspired by my paintings as they play with colour, text, pattern, etc. Well done, artists! And well done to Fairvale Visual Arts faculty who are such an amazing bunch of dedicated teachers!
13.01.2022 Am thrilled to be working with Fiona Dubrovnik at UTS this semester - teaching future primary teachers the 101s of Visual Arts education. I really enjoy my role as a lecturer these days - both at ACU & UTS - so wonderful to pass on skills and knowledge to our enthusiastic future teachers. This week’s focus: found object sculpture! Thanks for having me on your team, Fiona!
12.01.2022 My good friends at Monte Sant' Angelo Mercy College in North Sydney are running their annual Biamunga Yarn-Up and Maruku Marketplace next week. If you are around in Sydney & on school holidays - do pop on by. A great initiative by a fabulous school community!
12.01.2022 https://fb.watch/v/1KmOmJ0f2/ Have you done your homework, NSW VA teachers!? I have! Due tomorrow! Thanks to VADEA for providing such a thorough review! The fate of our syllabus is in OUR hands - let's get on board!
12.01.2022 Hello VA Teachers! I am thrilled to have been invited to present at this year's AIS VA conference! I will be discussing my practice as an artist/designer as well as sharing ideas for teaching and learning. Info on attached flyer. Open to all sectors. I hope to see you there! https://www.aisnsw.edu.au//21%20Visual%20Arts%20Showcase%2
11.01.2022 Hello VA Teachers: some of you have asked for me to share my Teacher Guide which I showcase on my Shaun Gladwell Case Study video (which you can view on this page). Posting a copy here for your information (unfortunately FB will only allow JPEGS). Hoping this resource may inspire your own programming!
10.01.2022 It's HSC Written Exam prep time again! Today I had the pleasure of delivering this workshop to YR12 students at Tyndale Christian School where we discussed how to navigate both sections of the paper. The added bonus was that I was invited to the school today by one of my ex-ACU education students - now a fully fledged VA teacher in her own right - Ms Steph Steele-Smith! So, this was a lovely full-circle moment - seeing Steph in her own classroom with her own students! Lucky kids and a proud teacher moment for me! If you have any inquiries about this workshop - please see the flyer attached!
10.01.2022 UPDATE 27/3 3PM: Thank you all for your feedback! It seems this will be a handy resource for your students. I shall get recording now! I think I will be able to provide each video as a URL which you can then copy and send out to students as you see fit. I will post here again when I have completed the series. Keep up your good work and thank you for your support! (Apologies for not replying to each of your posts) SF Hello HSC VA Teachers! Given the unsettling climate you & yo...ur students are currently facing, I am looking for ways I can help. With this in mind, I have decided to record my lecture series on 'HSC Success: The Written Exam' & would be very happy to share them with any teachers that think perhaps their students may find these videos of help. I usually deliver these lectures in schools face:to:face - but I thought there is no good just having these documents sitting in my hard drive when maybe they may be of use to someone, somewhere! As such, I will waive my usual fee and make them available at no cost. Please let me know if you may be interested in this series. I'd love to be able to help you. See more
09.01.2022 Hello VA teachers! | I am thrilled to be presenting at next week’s @aisnsw conference - alongside a fab list of educators and artists! | Open to all sectors! | See you there! . . . #aisnsw #nesa #visualartsteacher #visualartseducation #professionallearning
09.01.2022 The education world lost a great thinker & teacher this week. Sir Ken Robinson was a trailblazer educator & inspired so many of us in our profession. I often showcase Sir Ken video clips in my lectures & it’s always a delight to see my students discover him for the first time. Like all powerful teachers, his lessons will live on long after the class has ended. Vale, Sir Ken.
07.01.2022 After two semesters together, I farewelled my VA ed students this week! I have thoroughly enjoyed working with this bunch of dedicated pre-service teachers and wish them well as they continue their teaching journey. As a treat for our final lecture, special guest Angela Swadling shared her wealth of experience as a specialist VA educator - showcasing some of her fabulous Stage 6 case study resources and answering questions about the life of a VA teacher. It was a thrill to have someone of her calibre present as a Guest Lecturer. Thanks to Ange and farewell to my class of 2019!
07.01.2022 Welcome back! Today was my first w’shop for the year & what a great way to kickstart 2020 - working with LN students! Thanks to Libby Parker & Justin Madigan for having me back to work with their fresh-faced Year 7s as part of their Traditioning Day. Taking cues from Hiromi Tango’s practice, students created these amazing hanging gardens. A special thanks to my colleague Ange Swadling who helped facilitate the event - always love working side-by-side with her! Best wishes to all teachers for Term 1!
07.01.2022 A big thank you to the @aisnsw for inviting me to present at their Visual Arts ed conference today! | It was such a privilege to share my background as an educator / artist / designer to an audience of my peers! | It was so lovely to spend the day with this bunch of talented, dedicated & enthusiastic teachers! | Thank you Carlo & Melanie for organising such a fab day! . . . #nswvisualartsteachers #nesa #aisnsw #visualartseducation #visualarts #saveoursyllabus
05.01.2022 Love the way the Monte VA Department makes use of their students’ ‘abandoned’ ceramic pots! Their succulent garden is growing nicely outside their staffroom - although they tell me that the possums are loving a nibble at night!
05.01.2022 You get a box! You get a box! You get a box! etc. | What a lucky Visual Arts faculty - one set of these flashcards each! | Thank you, teachers - for your continued support! | X . . .... #theframes #educationresource #learningresource #visualarts #visualartseducation #visarted #safo #visualartsteacher #visualartsstudents #arteducation #australia #nesa #syllabuscontentarea #subjectiveframe #structuralframe #culturalframe #postmodernframe #ideasforteaching #flashcards #playingcards #literacy #skilldevelopment #studentasartist #studentascritic #flexiblelearning #adaptableideas #kickstarteractivities #teacherssupportingteachers
03.01.2022 Coming soon! | A conceptual framework resource! | 7-12 Visual Arts | Individual & collaborative | Hands-on, minds-on learning | Do let me know if this looks like something you’d be interested in for your students! . .... #theconceptualframework #agenciesoftheartworld #educationresource #learningresource #visualarts #visualartseducation #visarted #safo #visualartsteacher #visualartsstudents #arteducation #australia #nesa #syllabuscontentarea #artwork #artist #audience #world #ideasforteaching #flashcards #playingcards #literacy #skilldevelopment #studentasartist #studentascritic #flexiblelearning #adaptableideas #kickstarteractivities
03.01.2022 Cornelia Parker’s ‘Expect The Unexpected’ offers so many opportunities for teaching and learning. I wrote a case study or two in my mind as I walked through this impressive exhibition this afternoon! What a shame that MCA’s summer blockbusters don’t extend further into the school year! It closes on Feb 14 - so not much time to get your students there once school starts back!
02.01.2022 Friends: In these unsettling times, we have to look out for each other and share what skills and resources we have. If you or a family friend are in need of some Visual Arts education guidance for your HSC child - then please reach out. No doubt all VA teachers are doing what they can for their students but they will be stretched given the complex situation they are in - so, if an additional advice is needed along the way, I am waiving my usual tutoring fee. We are in this together. Stay safe.
02.01.2022 Wishing all HSC VA students well as they embark upon their Trial Written Exams. A special shout out to the lovely students at Newcastle Grammar School and their dedicated teacher Tonia Martin who recently had me back for another HSC Success seminar: hoping you guys smashed the exam last week! One of the games we played is the "5 Minute Reading Time" challenge - such a simple yet effective skill to practise as part of preparing for the exam (pictured). Coming up at ACU, I walk my uni students through how to prepare their future Stage 6 students for the HSC Written Exam!
02.01.2022 Thanks to the Lismore Catholic Schools Office for having me present at their recent annual conference. It was such a wonderful experience: to share my own professional journey with VA teachers from around the region and in turn, learn from them about their own ideas for teaching and learning. Over the two days, I shared my ideas on how I map content/assessments across Stage 6; how I develop case studies; how I design resources and how I prepare students for the written exam. ...I also shared my thoughts on how to design artmaking briefs using constraints that promote creativity. This discussion lead us into an artmaking session where I showcased my own practice as an artist. The challenge was to explore collage as a means to develop abstract compositions. Thanks to Vicki Foggiato and the CSO team for the invitation and thanks to the 15+ dedicated and enthusiastic VA teachers who attended. See more
02.01.2022 Hello teachers! A few weeks back I took my uni education students to see Shaun Gladwell: Pacific Undertow at the MCA in order to showcase how to develop an HSC Case Study (based on an exhibition). From there I went away and created a student reader to accompany the case study. Whist this exercise was intended for my own ed students - I thought there may be some other VA teachers (who may new to the HSC classroom) who may find this of interest. Attached is a tour slideshow ...of the resource. There are many ways to design a reader - this is just one! Happy holidays (as you prep for next term!)! Do you have any must haves when designing case study readers/booklets? Please feel free to share your own hot tips! (Thank you to those teachers who have inquired about purchasing my resources - this is on my agenda for 2020! In the meantime, I am available for curriculum consults!).
02.01.2022 I have worked with some fabulous primary education students this semester at UTS. I wish them all well as they continue their studies! Thank you to Fiona and Kath for a very enjoyable teaching experience!
