25.01.2022 Sharing this from Wendy Lloyd Curley : WHY CANDLES BURN DIFFERENTLY IN WINTER... It’s mid-winter, the heaters are earning their keep, and warm evenings indoors are on everyone’s agenda.... I love burning candles in the winter. Although they add to the ambience whatever the temperature outside, the flicker of flame in the early darkness makes me feel cozy straight away. But they do burn differently when the temperature drops. When candles and candle holders are cold, it takes longer for them to liquefy. If your jars or votive holders have very thick glass, they hold the cold. So when the wax melts to the sides, it will harden up again because the holder is cold. As a result, in the winter there will be more wax left over than in the summer. This is normal and this is why we say that candles last between 8-10 hours. It’s all dependent on the environment - and temperature and draft are important components. Pillar and 3-wick candles also are affected by the cold; put simply, they take longer to liquefy to the edge. For example, my 3-wick pillar was alight for about 7 hours yesterday. It’s burning really well, but it needs to burn for a long time. You also won’t want to trim the wicks too short in the winter the longer wick gives the flame more height and heat. If it’s too low, the wax will pool and ‘drown’ the wick, not allowing it to burn well. So, when burning your candles in winter, leave plenty of time to enjoy the ambience and fragrance and have slightly longer wicks when burning. Happy burning & stay warm!
