22.01.2022 I’ve been juicing it up lately - loving the fresh, clean feeling I have after drinking one. The major benefit of drinking FRESH juice is the high amount of antioxidants contained in them. A study found that drinking carrot juice increased antioxidant levels significantly and reduced lipid peroxidation (a cardiovascular risk factor). https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21943297/... In my juice I usually have carrot, celery, beetroot, ginger and an apple or an orange. #naturopath #gerringong #berry #kiama #letfoodbeyourmedicine #freshjuice

22.01.2022 A food intolerance is different from a food allergy. The body’s response from ingesting a food allergen is usually immediate, however the response from a food intolerance is often delayed (up to days) making it difficult to ascertain which foods are causing your issues. A food intolerance creates an immune response (IGg) and is caused by certain food proteins leaking through the gut and then causing inflammation in the body. The test can be a great first step in uncovering... what is going on in your body. People find when they eliminate the known trigger foods from their diet, their symptoms are alleviated, which is fantastic right? In naturopathic medicine we go deeper. Identifying the trigger is a great first step but it is also essential to look at the underlying cause for lasting and sustainable health. Causes for food intolerance are usually related to the gut it’s integrity and permeability. Integrity of the gut can also be compromised by alcohol consumption, stress, antibiotics and poor diet. How does it work? We meet for an initial consultation, where we go through your current health concerns and full health history. Referral for an intolerance test if appropriate. We meet 3-4 weeks later to discuss test results and work together to create a comprehensive menu plan that makes working with the changes easy and manageable. Ongoing consultation are spaced between 2-4 weeks, depending on your needs and co existing health concerns. 22.01.2022 Still having left overs from the weekend!! Winter warming lunch Getting high on Beta carotene ... it’s present in red, orange and yellow foods. Our bodies convert beta carotene to vitamin A, which is essential for immune function, eye and skin health. Beta carotene is also a powerful antioxidant. On my plate: sweet potato and quinoa patties thanks @dandelionandmallow ... 21.01.2022 Lovely, well balanced post on change and motivation. Everything in nature, including you, ebbs and flows with energy and motivation. It’s normal to feel a drop in motivation and mojo at times, but it’s also important to know how to get back on track. And please remember, it’s a positive cycle. Once you start feeling good, you will become more motivated to maintain that feeling (and the all-important habits that led you there!).

20.01.2022 Afternoon tea? #buenavista goats cheese and chives with smoked salmon and some dill from my garden. So easy, so yummy! #naturopath #gerringong #kiama #berry

18.01.2022 I grew some chamomile! I’ve been wanting to grow some in my garden for a long time. I have very fond memories of picking it in Greece and Tasmania. The smell always takes me back there. Chamomile is most widely known for its calming effect on the nervous system and digestion. Chamomile essential oil used externally is great for tummy pain and bloating. ... It’s also a lovely add in to a herbal cream for its anti inflammatory and healing effect for skin conditions, such as eczema. Hope you’re having a lovely weekend #naturopath #nature #gerringong #berry #kiama #chamomile #herbalmedicine #naturalmedicine

17.01.2022 Seeing some art today in Sydney with my girl @lily_worboys Went to the #biennale at #carriageworks after visiting @lornagrear_studio opening this morning. Beautiful show Lorna. Before I studied naturopathy, I studied fine arts, majoring in painting at NAS. I often think how I can merge art and naturopathy and herbal medicine ... I’m not alone it seems! Feeling inspired to put some paint on paper again. ... Thanks to the artists of our world for making life beautiful. To all my friends who share their work, thank you. It inspires me (I forgot to take a shot of the artists name for the plant paintings ... biennale at Carriageworks)

17.01.2022 Sometimes I feel like a medal at the end of the day. I didn’t feel like I needed one today, but I found a sweet reward anyway It’s been on my dresser for a while - I was having a little tidy up and decided to open it. Made by Daisy #sweetreward #love

14.01.2022 Starting tomorrow we will be hosting a pop- up youth drop-in space at Werri Beach Progress Hall every Tuesday and Wednesday in August 2-5pm and beyond August if... there is need. Note that the space will be open from 12pm this Wednesday following Sam's send off. We want this to be a comfortable, safe and inclusive space for young people aged 12-25 to come together and support each other, have fun and chill. We will also be providing games and food and if you are a musician, we invite you to bring the tunes! Youth workers will be available for support, advice and referral. We will be following COVID safety measures and ask you to stay home if you are unwell. There is a maximum of 20 people allowed inside the building. Note also that the Youth Centre at Kiama will be closed on these days so that staff can be at Werri. Contact Mel on 42331276 or 0491153834 for further details.

14.01.2022 To the members of our community, I have been in contact with Council Member Matt Brown who, in light of recent devastations, is putting forward the following mo...tion at the next council meeting: Kiama Council: 1. On behalf of our community, mourn the loss of another young local and express deepest concern at the alarming number of our young people who have recently taken their own lives, four lives lost just in the past month of July!; 2. On behalf of our community, express our sympathy and support to the grieving families and friends; 3. Acknowledge the tragic loss of young lives though suicide is a problem for our community and one which we need to face and work towards a solution in order to prevent further tragedies; 4. Call on the community to suggest the terms of reference, format and composition, for a Suicide Prevention - Stronger Community Committee, which will consist of five (5) community representatives and two (2) Councillors; Matt Brown and Mark Westoff, and this committee to be supported and resourced by Council. It is clear and imperative at this time that a Suicide-Prevention committee be put into place and sprung into action to provoke change. We ask you, the members of our community, for discussion and any suggestions at this time. Please be mindful and respectful for those mourning losses right now, or those who have been touched by suicide in their lives. This is a horribly devastating time for our community, and it calls for serious action in order to protect our youth and minimise these tragedies to the best of our abilities. Please feel free to share this motion and offer any-- kind and constructive-- commentary.

13.01.2022 I’ve been saying this little ‘mantra’ a bit lately... it’s been helping me not feel overwhelmed about all the things, the lists, work, life, kids, exercise, food... It happened this morning, not long after I woke up, the busyness and the planning. I just reminded myself to ‘Just do today’. It can be with grief Changing a lifestyle habit... Giving up something Not doing enough of something Being irritated Wanting to get something done Feeling tired... Do you feel overwhelmed by all that ‘needs’ to happen in the future? Just. Do. Today. #naturopath #gerringong #kiama #berrry #justdotoday #lifestylemedicine

07.01.2022 I just pulled my juicer out of the cupboard, after a loooong break. It’s sitting in the spot where my beloved Sylvia has been, making me morning coffees for 11 years. She broke. Good luck, bad luck, who knows day 1, no coffee. I’m off to @sol_organics to pick up some juicing gear #naturopath #juicing #kiama #gerringong #berry

05.01.2022 The garden and the gut For a while now I’ve been thinking how similar the relationship is between the health of the soil and the health of our gut and body. I was watching Gardening Australia on Friday night (new favourite show!) and listening to one of the presenters talk about the health of the garden and how similar that perspective is to how I think about our bodies. I mean it make sense to me. The principles of organic farming are similar to feeding your body well ...from the ground up - for a garden to thrive and the plants to be healthy, what they grow in needs to be rich with nutrients and the soil diverse with good microbes. The environment of a garden also benefits by having good bugs (like lady bugs) they help keep the bad bugs away (like afids). Having diversity and strong soil health also limits the need for pesticides and herbicides, therefore reducing the toxin load on the garden and what you eat. This is pretty simplistic but having a picture like this helps me see how important it is to give our bodies what they need to thrive. If you apply the same principles of the soil to your gut having enough fibre and pre biotics (compost, fertiliser, worm castings), provides good food for your good bugs in your gut to thrive, which will help reduce an over growth of ‘bad’ bugs. Feeding your body with nutrient dense foods makes strong bodies, by providing the building blocks for muscle making, skin healing and repair, strong bones, good eyesight, strong immune systems, hormonal balance, neurotransmitter production so many things. Do you put a plant in a pot and expect it to grow and produce abundant fruit if you don’t feed it, water it and give it sunshine? We can’t expect the same of our bodies if we don’t do the same. How are you tending to the garden of your body? Do you need some guidance on how to thrive? I’d love to help. This is a pic of my new gardening adventure! #naturopath #gerringong #gardeningaustralia #kiama #berry #letfoodbeyourmedicine #naturalmedicine #soilhealth #guthealth

05.01.2022 I have had an idea brewing for a little while. Kept forgetting about it and then remembering again ... SO, today I started. The time estimated on the plan said half a day... it might take me a few weekends. I feel really satisfied having started a creative project that’s going to support my business as well as the community. Stay tuned #naturopathicmedicine #naturopath #gerringong #kiama #berry
