23.01.2022 Some great news from Victoria, with a Bill to ban conversion practices introduced to Parliament today. This Bill comes after extensive consultation between the Victorian government, LGBTIQ+ people, and religious communities. In particular, survivors or conversion practices had a strong voice in the consultation process. We look forward to seeing the Bill in order to understand how it could be applied here in South Australia, too.

19.01.2022 We know that many LGBTIQ+ people experience job insecurity, in large part due to the casualisation of the workforce. Improving job security is one of many ways to improve the well-being of our community, which is why we proudly stand with the South Australian Council of Social Service and more than two dozen other organisations in this joint letter to Premier Steven Marshall in the aftermath of our recent COVID lockdown.

18.01.2022 Thank you Alastair Lawrie for this submission about the South Australian government's plan to amend the Equal Opportunity Act. Submissions are open until this Friday, so we encourage community members to have their say via the YourSay website or by making your own submission. See the link below for more details. https://yoursay.sa.gov.au//religious-exceptions-chan/about... We'll be making our own submission, echoing much of what Alastair has said. This is an important opportunity to improve legislation to ensure religious organisations are unable to discriminate against LGBTIQ+ people.

12.01.2022 Have you experienced LGBTIQA+ conversion practices? Kelly and Matt from SARAA will be meeting with survivors of conversion practices at the Activate Church on 18 October to inform people about the current campaign to ban conversion practices in SA and to hear from survivors about your experiences and what you think needs to be done. People of any faith (or no faith) are welcome to join us for this discussion, and we thank Activate for providing us with a safe place for this conversation.

10.01.2022 SARAA was thrilled to have Dr Nikki Sullivan present the Oration this year, in memory of late, great LGBTIQ+ community leader Ian Purcell. Nikki talks about pride in protest, the different shapes protest can take, and why they are all equally important. Nikki encourages us to work on developing our 'gag reflex' to be a better activist and ally and to be kinder to ourselves.

10.01.2022 There's a lot going on in SA's parliament this week! Listen to this video from Tammy Franks Greens MLC, Robert Simms and our very own Kelly Vincent where they cover: - The gay panic defence... - Spent conviction reforms for historic offences from when homosexuality was illegal - Reducing bans on blood donations for men who have sex with men We'll be watching closely and will keep you posted of any updates!

08.01.2022 A Bill to finally abolish the gay panic defence has just been introduced to Parliament! Introduced by Hon Michelle Lensink MLC, this Bill is a fantastic step forward. We thank the Marshall government for their work in getting us to this point, in particular Attorney General Vickie Chapman MP for her consultation with SARAA and other stakeholders around the wording of the Bill earlier this year.... We're not done yet though! Debate will continue when Parliament resumes. If you haven't done so already, please sign the Equality Australia/SARAA petition to show your support for this reform. We think this Bill is a chance not just to eliminate the gay panic defence, but to also ensure that crimes motivated by hate or prejudice are treated accordingly by courts. See the petition to learn more about a key amendment to the Bill that we're seeking.

07.01.2022 Equality Australia have made it easier to have your say about the Equal Opportunity Bill! Check out their website for more information, and let the government know what you think.

02.01.2022 Great news! We've just hit 25,000 signatures for our petition to abolish the gay panic defence in South Australia! Thank you to everyone who continues to show support for this cause. By working together and making our voices heard we can eliminate this outdated law from Australia once and for all!
