02.01.2022 Arbus' black sheep is part of the slow food foundation to promote biodiversity! The traditional use for this sheep is for wool, used to create traditional Sardinian costumes; however, the meat and milk are both of high quality. The Arbus Black sheep is a native breed, and, apart from the Sarda Bianca (White Sardinian), the only other indigenous breed in Sardinia. Its origins are not known for certain, but it probably came from a selection of Sardinian sheep with a base col...or of black instead of white. This breed was progressively abandoned in the 1970s during a push to find a more productive breed for milk production, leading to its replacement by the Sardinian White. Today, there are about 2000 of these sheep concentrated in Arbus and the neighboring communes of Medio Campidano and Cagliari.
