21.01.2022 Yesterday afternoon, Mayor Greg Williamson and Deputy Mayor Karen May unveiled 15 new plaques in the Sarina Museum's Memory Lane history project. In the origi...nal project, 121 family plaques were unveiled by then Sarina Mayor Kevin Morgan as part of the Sarina Festival on June 1, 2006. That number grew to 412 family plaques in Memory Lane when it was reopened after the parklands were revamped in October 2018. Memory Lane is an eye-catching feature to complement the pathways and gardens and encourages visitors to explore the parklands from the arts and crafts centre, along to the museum and then on to Sarina Sugar Shed. The latest phase of the project was coordinated by museum volunteer Jenny Boswood, who dedicated countless hours to collating and editing the histories written by the families. Thanks to all involved, including Sarina and District Historical Centre president Carolyn Scott who emceed the short ceremony.

19.01.2022 National Volunteer Week is the annual celebration to acknowledge the generous contribution of our nation's volunteers. Mackay Regional Council and museum staff would like to thank all our volunteers for the vital role they play each and every day in protecting and preserving our region's history and sharing it with our community. Thank you for all you do!... #NationalVolunteerWeek #NationalVolunteerWeek2021 #thankyou
19.01.2022 As Senior Citizen’s Week comes to a close, the Museum would like to pay tribute to every senior citizen in Sarina and surrounding areas. If it weren’t for the wealth of knowledge that some of you have passed on about the early days of Sarina and the stories you have told, the history of Sarina would have been lost. It is not only the history of Sarina, but the history of our own personal lives that we need to keep passing down to all future generations to keep these memories alive. How many of us now, wish we had taken the time to talk to our grandparents about their life experiences?
18.01.2022 Happy Mothers Day to all the Mothers, Grandmothers and Great Grandmothers out there. May you have a wonderful day and create many happy memories. To all the mothers that are no longer with us 'Thank You' for all that you have done for us. To all those who will become Mothers soon, the best part of your life is ahead of you. The Sarina Museum Volunteers wish you all a wonderful Mothers Day

15.01.2022 Who has taken the time to read the plaque on the footpath in front of the National Bank? Photo of the store it refers to.
14.01.2022 Check out what’s on offer at Greenmount Homestead this week! Kids entry is FREE during school holidays!
14.01.2022 On Saturday, the Museum volunteers had the pleasure of meeting with members of the 15 families who have added their plaques into Memory Lane. Each family also received their copy of Volume 6, of our Take A Trip Down Memory Lane, Remember When book, in which a short history of their lives in Sarina is featured. Much to our disappointment, due to Covid restrictions, the usual formal plaque unveiling and book launch, including the families was unable to be held. Although a bit back to front, a virtual unveiling was held, with only museum volunteers and council representatives in attendance yesterday afternoon. Hopefully things will have returned to normal before our next round of plaques.

13.01.2022 Monday 14th September a Virtual Unveiling of 15 more Family Plaques was held at the Sarina Museum. This is not how we usually unveil our Family Plaques but because of Covid 19 we weren't able to have the usual unveiling with the families. Thank you to all involved.

12.01.2022 SEEKING INFORMATION. The Museum Volunteers are currently researching this old bakery building built in 1936 and are hoping someone can tell us when the extension to the bakery was built and who built it.
12.01.2022 This post contains sad news. It is with heavy hearts that we here at Greenmount Homestead must share with you that beloved former caretaker Gloria Arrow has pas...sed away at the age of 80. Arriving at the homestead in 1958 aged 17, Gloria's longstanding association with Greenmount and her warm, kind-hearted manner made her an esteemed figure in the local community. She graciously welcomed generations of our region's schoolchildren to the homestead; her funny anecdotes of life at Greenmount charmed visitors from our local community, from across Australia, and from all around the world. Gloria's contributions to local heritage over the course of her lifetime have been nothing short of remarkable. We here at Greenmount Homestead have been so fortunate to have known her, and we as a community are so fortunate that she shared her life and her stories with us. We extend our deepest condolences to her family during this difficult time.
11.01.2022 Hello Everyone. We are hoping that someone will be able to help us with this photo. It was dropped off to us a couple of weeks ago but there was no name or contact details with it. It is a painting of a number of places in Sarina. The 2 large paintings are of the mill and we can recognise a few of the old shops in the town as well. We would love to be able to find out who owned it and painted it and the story behind the painting. If you think you might know please contact the people or let us know and we will try and track them. Thanks for your help with this.
11.01.2022 Hello, I’m Robert Ryan, Senior Co-ordinator Community Programs. I have the pleasure of leading the community programs team at Mackay Regional Council. In my rol...e I have oversight of Community Development, Community Grants, Arts Development, Sport and Recreation, Museums and Greenmount Homestead, Youth Centres, Sarina Neighbourhood Centre as well as Council’s Sister City relationship with Matsuura Japan. There is never a dull day! I have been with Council for 22 years commencing my journey as a Locality Development Officer, responsible for all locality areas within the old Mackay City Council footprint. At that time, I spent many evenings and weekends attending progress association meetings, supporting community to identify and resolve issues impacting their locality. I am proud that the community programs team still play an active role in supporting and developing our locality areas. If you have an issue that we can help with, give the team a call on 1300 622 529.

09.01.2022 In honour of the 60th anniversary of Queensland Seniors Week, Mackay Regional Council is highlighting some of our community’s Selfless Seniors. We have many Selfless Seniors amongst our museum volunteers across all four of our sites, and through their hard work and dedication they enable our museums to thrive. We are so grateful for the wonderful contribution they, and all our region’s Selfless Seniors, make to our community.... Thank you to our Selfless Seniors, and to all our volunteers, for all that you do! #SelflessSeniors #MackayPride
09.01.2022 We were kindly given this copy of a photo of the old National Bank, last week. Where Ward’s jewellers are today. If you have any old Sarina photos in your collections we would love it, if you could share them with us.
09.01.2022 As part of the Australian Heritage Festival 2021, we're sharing some of the more unique objects in Mackay Regional Council's museum collections. Did you know that Kraft foods had a factory in the Australian National Power Alcohol Distillery in Sarina during the 1950s and 1960s? They used the space to produce that most iconic of Aussie foods, Vegemite. All but the final process of making Vegemite was done in Sarina, with the fermented paste being sent off to be consumed by h...appy little Vegemites all across Australia. Digitising our collections is a massive undertaking, but we look forward to the day when we can share all of our collection digitally with interested individuals near and far! #mackayregionmuseums #mackaypride #ahf2020 #AHF2021 #heritage4future
08.01.2022 Mackay Regional Council's museum team was recently approached by ABC Tropical North to share the stories of some of our favourite artefacts. Have a listen to volunteer Vicky Bowden's excellent interview about Greenmount Homestead's rocking horse!
08.01.2022 We have had a request from one of our members who is tracing the history of old Comair Bedford buses. The one in the attached photo has supposedly made its way to Sarina in the 90s. It was previously used as a hay carting vehicle. The photo was taken in September 1996. Can anybody provide any information on the truck?
08.01.2022 Look who we got a visit from TODAY! Yes, the TODAY show called into Sarina Sugar Shed to film for tomorrow's program. TODAY weather presenter Tim Davies (yes, h...e really is as nice as he seems!) toured around, recording his favourite parts of the Sugar Shed. Turns out Tim has visited before, as a young lad, and remembers our display patch of sugar cane!! Thanks to Rainee Shepperson from Mackay Tourism (left) for bringing the team down! Tune into the TODAY show on Channel Nine from 5.30am tomorrow to see the Sarina Sugar Shed during one of the weather segments! The team will be live from Cape Palmerston Holiday Park! www.sarinasugarshed.com.au

03.01.2022 This week, Mayor Greg Williamson presented Sarina Museum volunteer Carolyn Scott with the Pride of the Region award in recognition of her years of service to the Sarina community. Carolyn has volunteered in many different capacities within the Sarina community over the years, becoming involved at her children's school, the Sarina Show Society, and many groups within the Catholic church. She was a founding member of the Sarina and District Historical Centre in 1996, and conti...nues to lead a group of dedicated volunteers today. On behalf of Mackay Regional Council, we would like to extend our congratulations to Carolyn and thank her for her years of dedicated service to Sarina Museum and the wider community. Through the hard work and dedication of Carolyn and volunteers like her, we will be able to share the stories of our region with visitors for years to come. Congratulations, Carolyn! #PrideOfTheRegion #MackayPride #SarinaPride
01.01.2022 Thank you to all the people who volunteer at Sarina Museum. You are a great group of people to work with and your work is appreciated. Thank you to you all
