25.01.2022 How we live & inhabit our homes is a reflection of our mental state. I find that it is less about finances and more about feelings. I have been into many beautiful homes that were expensive & immaculate but not homely. I have been in many small homely cottages that felt safe and welcoming. When I am working with a client and they tell me " I feel the same as before, no better" yet they have just decluttered the spare room, linen cupboard, filing cabinet & garage- Yet last vi...sit they were unable to make it through the afternoon without a nap....I know they are making progress, both physically to be able to do the job but also mentally as they want to clear space.... I often see this at the beginning of their journey back to health.... Lesley x
25.01.2022 Soy gets a really bad wrap... which is a little unfair. I use soy & find for the most part if you are using an organic, good quality product it is beneficial especially for hormonal issues. This article examines some of the myths. My favourite brands are the Woolies Macro or Coles own organic long life soy. Let me know what you think.... Lesley x ... https://blog.metagenics.com.au/all-the-noise-about-soy/

24.01.2022 Premenstrual dysphoric disorder PMDD is PMS on steroids. This is a debilitating condition that needs a combined medical approach. Symptoms include severe depression, anxiety, mood changes or anger. Most commonly the symptoms occur post ovulation (so in the second half of the cycle) and resolve once the menstrual bleed begins. The most common herbs used include St Johns Wort, Withania, Lavender, & Chaste tree. Sometimes antidepressants are warranted if the symptoms are seve...re. Lesley x
20.01.2022 Mental health issues can present in many different forms. Recognising the signs in those you are close to can be difficult. This info from Mental Health Believe UK identifies some of the common presentations. It is important to be careful not to assume that mental issues will present as a someone who is sad or withdrawn. Often the most bubbly, seeming happy people are suffering the most.... Lesley x
19.01.2022 TWENTY TWENTY ONE - As we come to the end of 2020 - what do you say good bye to? Weight Illness Fatigue... Hormonal chaos Clutter Fear Self doubt Procrastination What do you welcome for 2021? Health Wellness Energy Sleep Contentment Fulfilment Peace Balance Strength Exercise Meditation Yoga MAKING A PLAN - How do you plan to achieve this What actions do you need to take to make this become your reality What is the time frame What are you prepared to sacrifice How will you measure your success If you don't consider these, then New Years Resolutions are nothing more than just a wish.... I will be working a lot in 2021 with clients to set their goals & create a blueprint on how they can achieve them. If 2020 has shown us anything it is that we need to take control of our own health & wellbeing. You only have one shot at life & what is the point of not achieving all that you can.... Happy New Year - I am so excited to see what 2021 brings, especially for those who have had sadness & loss in 2020 Lesley x
19.01.2022 Every day we get a fresh chance to focus on what's important. Whether it is mental health or physical health, focussing on what you CAN change is important. We all have strengths and weaknesses but often attitude is the biggest determinant to health. Lesley x Thanks Mental Health Support for the image

18.01.2022 Mediterranean Diet & why I love it.... One question that I often get asked is what is the best diet. Well I would say there isn't one, but a lower carbohydrate Mediterranean diet is my option the best diet for the majority of people. in particular those will cardiovascular issues such as high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, & for anyone who wants to lose weight in a healthy way. What to eat- Lots of veggies, especially greens at every meal- not just dinner... Salads, fish, eggs. Lots of extra virgin olive oil Small amounts of good quality meat & dairy. Nuts, seeds, small amounts of wholegrains & fruits.... I often combine this with intermittent fasting recommendations for my clients and get great results. I find many people following this style of eating have been able to reduce or eliminate their medications for lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, cholesterol or high blood pressure, simply by eating better, moving more and losing weight. 17.01.2022 Just because you can't see a disease on the outside doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Be kind, you never know the battle people are going through just to be "normal". I have the pleasure of seeing many strong, determined, brave women transform their lives often through determination & sheer hard work. Often they leave me in awe.... Happy Friday Lesley x
17.01.2022 With so much info out there on what to eat, it is often difficult for people to know where to start. Advice is often conflicting and people are confused as to whether low fat /high fat - low carb/ keto / vegan/ Paleo etc would suit them best I came across this food pyramid that I thought explains how a good diet should look. There is not one single way of eating that suits everyone, but if the majority of the diet is made up of green veggies, colourful veggies, nuts, seeds..., quality protein and good oils then this is a very good place to start... Food is medicine.... Lesley x Thanks Edify for the image
17.01.2022 Mental health looks different for everyone. Many people expect a person suffering with poor mental health to look sad but often they present as the life of the party... Some may be withdrawn but not always. Changing diet, increasing nutrients required for good neurotransmitter production is not as difficult as you may think. Eating regularly to balance blood sugar levels can reduce anxiety dramatically. Lesley x ... Thanks Mental Health Believe UK for the image.

15.01.2022 With so many cheap options, disposable fashion is big business, but when you stop and think it isn't really disposable. I find this quite staggering... the amount of plastic left behind from stretchy jeans, even after a year of breaking down.... Try to reuse, recycle, buy second hand where you can. Buy cotton or natural fibers where possible. ... Buy better quality, long lasting brands if you can afford to... We all have a role to play, I know I am guilty of buying stretchy jeans because they are more comfy but I was shocked by the amount of plastics... We can all do our bit by making smarter choices with our hard earned cash.... Lesley x Thanks Waste-Ed for the image
14.01.2022 I am pretty sure we should put Ashwagandha (AKA Withania) in the water supply this time of year... Stress- Ashwaganda is an adaptogenic herb, which means it has the ability to improve the body’s resistance to stress by supporting the central nervous system, as well as the immune and endocrine systems. Ashwagandha supports the bodies ability to cope with stress & adapt to the current circumstances. The brain - Ashwagandha has long been used in traditional Indian medicine to e...nhance memory and focus. These actions have been at the centre of numerous clinical trials, garnering positive results for not only memory and focus, but alertness, overall cognitive health and function, and prevention of cognitive decline. Anxiety- Ashwagandha is a potent anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) and may be useful in disorders involving GABA dysregulation. Sleep - Hyper-activation of the HPA axis is also a common driver of sleep disorders, particularly insomnia and obstructive sleep apnoea. Ashwagandha is believed to work as a nervine tonic, in part, by regulating the HPA axis, thereby supporting restorative sleep. Anaemia - Ashwagandha is also a blood restorative herb, shown to increase red cell count & iron levels. It is a good nutritive to add when a person is convalescing. On a final note, it has also been shown to support vitality and testosterone levels in men. And you wonder why I think we should put it in the water supply !! Happy Hump Day - Hope your stress is manageable, remember to breathe Lesley x
14.01.2022 Self talk I see people doing all the right things without getting the results they should. When digging deeper, often they are eating well or exercising well out of obligation or dislike of themselves. Not from a place of care. A positive goal to work toward is always easier than a negative one to move away from. For example putting a nice picture of yourself on display to remind you of how you want to feel again, rather than a fat photo that you hate, to try to stop you ea...ting the contents of the fridge is often a better move. Treating yourself with kindness & compassion is really difficult for many, especially woman. Be kind, you are the only occupant. Take some time this weekend & listen to how you talk to yourself. 13.01.2022 Insulin - the party hormone! When there is an abundance of food insulin is secreted in response to eating. The more food (especially carbohydrates), the more insulin is secreted, and the more energy that can be stored. Insulin allows the glucose to enter the cell for energy. When insulin is continually being produced due to a high carbohydrate diet, the body turns down receptors. Basically, the body stops listening, the sugar stays in the blood, not in the cell where it is n...eeded & begins to cause damage to small capillaries in the feet, eyes, kidneys etc. Insulin is all about promoting glucose, protein, and fat storage, inhibiting fat burning and promoting growth of tissues (especially fat). Insulin levels are a lot higher in the Western world, compared to people following an ancestral hunter and gatherer lifestyle, this is due to the constant supply of carbohydrate-rich processed foods like cereals, bread, pasta, biscuits and other sweet treats. When insulin levels are constantly elevated the cellular response to insulin changes, instead of the anabolic effects to promote muscle growth we get increased weight gain, especially fat around the waist. Other signs and symptoms of insulin resistance and poor carbohydrate tolerance are fatigue, increased appetite, carbohydrate cravings, insomnia, acne, atherosclerosis, and hypertension. Left untreated the constantly elevated insulin levels will lead to diabetes, cardiovascular disease, & other inflammatory conditions. The good news is you have total control here. Yes diabetes runs in families but so do eating habits. I feel that somewhere along the way, we forgot how much control we have over our health & wellness and left the decision making in the hands of big pharma... Lesley x
13.01.2022 Keeping it simple....what can you work on to improve your mental health? It is often the simple changes that have the biggest impact... Lesley x Thanks Mark Grant, Psychologist & Author for the image...

12.01.2022 Tired, cholesterol through the roof, doctor wants to put you on medication, blood pressure it up & now you are becoming insulin resistant...this is how may 40 somethings present in clinic... Blood pressure, cholesterol, high triglycerides and low energy, especially mental energy are all influenced by mitochondria. This recent meta-analysis investigated the effect of L-carnitine on blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, triglycerides and HDL. What they found was a clear dosa...ge effect where there was a significant reduction in fasting blood glucose and triglycerides and an increase in HDL at dosages above 1g/day. There were significant effects in reducing waist circumference and blood pressure at any dosage. Mitochondria are what produce energy within our cells. The mitochondria can be damaged by toxins from the environment & from our diet. L-carnitine can be really beneficial along side good dietary & lifestyle changes. 12.01.2022 2021 - If you are unhappy where you are from a health, weight, energy, mental health standpoint, then consider what you willing to change? Changing day to day habits is key. A detox, or a challenge is great, but in reality if you want to make lasting change then changing habits is the way forward. When I work with clients I like to give them 2- 3 "homework" activities each appointment to incorporate into their day to day life. Then once those positive changes are made, we ma...ke some more, until healthy habits are simply part of their daily routine. We might begin with moving bedtime 30 mins earlier Increasing water intake by 0.5 litres Eating eggs for breakfast Walking 20 minutes Adding 1 extra vegetable to each meal - As you can see, none of these changes are big on their own, but over time as you increase them & add in new habits regularly, they become easy and you don't need willpower to get them done. Habits will out win willpower every time. The challenge is to make the changes incremental enough to feel achievable, but important enough to make all the difference to a person's physical & mental health..... #HealthyHabits2021- what will yours be? 11.01.2022 Vitamin B6 I find is often overlooked as an important nutrient. It is one of the first nutrients I use for hormonal or mental health issues.. Vitamin B6 healthy body, healthy brain Richest sources are fish, organ meats, potatoes and other starchy vegetables, dark leafy greens, and non-citrus fruit. B6 can also be found in poultry, beans, some whole-grains, and nuts. Aids in lowering homocysteine levels and may therefore reduce the risk of heart disease and dementia.... Helps convert tryptophan to serotonin, a neurotransmitter that plays key roles in sleep, appetite, and moods. Randomised trials have shown a 70% reduction in nausea and vomiting in pregnant women and lower hospitalisation rates for this problem with supplementation of B6. A 2017 study indicated that vitamin B6 may help to protect against air pollution, by reducing the impact of pollution on the genome. Deficiency may cause weak immune system, anaemia, scaly skin on the lips, cracks at the corners of the mouth and a swollen tongue. Other symptoms of a very low vitamin B6 levels include depression and confusion. Supplemental B6 can be toxic if taken for extended periods. Always seek professional guidance. Thanks Your Health Your Choice for the info...

07.01.2022 Letting go - You can feel the stress at the moment as everyone struggles to get to the end of the year..... I find the end of the year a good time to re-evaluate the year that is almost gone, especially if you are really struggling. Each year I try to ask- What did I do well this year? What can I do better next year?... What would I like to achieve next year? In order to make change, sometimes you have to make room. Sometimes in making room, you have to let sh%t go... You can have it all but you can't have it all at once, so somewhere along the way, you have to let sh%t go & be okay with that. So if health, fitness, better eating habits, finance, or career are your goals, what are you prepared to forgo to fit them into your life? Everyone has the same 24 hours or 1440 minutes every day. Sometimes choosing what to add in, is easier than deciding what to let go of... Lesley x

05.01.2022 A nice article discussing the link between nutrients & mental health. Often it really is the most important aspect of a patient prescription. I find many of my clients need to spread their protein throughout the day, rather than eating a large portion at night. This also helps with blood glucose fluctuations, which can lead to anxiety for many. Lesley x ... https://www.psychologytoday.com//vitamin-deficiencies-and-
