21.01.2022 One expert says this: How Your Skin Type Can Change "Your skin type can change over time due to environmental factors, age, hormones and other health-related issues," Michele Green, M.D., a New York City-based board-certified dermatologist, explains. "Yes, your skin can transform from oily to dry, combination, or sensitive, but it doesn't just happen on its own. There are factors like climate that can cause minor or major adjustment to your skin type. Similar to changes in your environment, Dr. Green adds shifts in your medications, stress levels, and diet can affect how much or how little oil your skin produces. "Acne is inflammation, which can be exacerbated by hormones released during stress. Acne caused by stress is usually accompanied by redness, itching, and an increased number of blackheads and whiteheads, she says.

We asked dermatologist New York City-based dermatologist Dr. Marnie Nussbaum to break it down for us. Can You Change Your Skin Type A Dermatologist Weighs In... The answer? "You can't intrinsically change your skin type." Rats. You knew that was coming, right? However, here's the thing: "You can transform it by feeding what it needs, i.e., moisture for dry skin, astringents for oily skin, and such." In other words, by being smart about how you treat your skin, you can compensate. More on that later. That doesn't mean your skin will never ever budge from its current path. "A patient's skin type can change over time depending upon numerous factors such as water content, oil content, and sensitivity. Factors that affect these changes include hormones, aging, changes in seasons, and medications."

Environmental and lifestyle choices can cause our skin to age prematurely.... The AAD recommends taking preventative actions like protecting ourselves from sunlight, regular exercise, a balanced diet, and avoiding things like smoking can have a profound effect in preventing aging with our skin. While it may not be possible to literally change skin types, per se, our skin itself does change and adapt over time. So confusing...
