25.01.2022 Wed like to wish all our families, students, volunteers and our wider community and very Merry Christmas. For those of you who celebrate Christmas, we hope you all had a wonderful day with those important to you! Wed like to thank the Trainers, coaches and members of MPT Transformations in Croydon, Rowville and Brunswick, for getting together to truly make Christmas a little more special for our Saturday School families. Over the month of December they kindly donated food, books, school stationary and many other things, to go towards Christmas hampers for each of our special families! We were able to deliver the hampers on the weekend before Christmas to our very excited and thankful students! Thank you MPT

25.01.2022 Guess what everyone! Its that time of year again for the St Peters Spring Fair and the students cant wait to show you what theyve been up to! Weve been stretching our creativity and making some beautiful handmade clay beads which we will sell as necklaces and key rings at our very own stall. We will be giving away Bakers Delight Bread with every purchase, and there is a lucky dip for a gold coin donation children can enjoy. We also will be selling our very popular South Sudanese biscuits again this year. The students will love having you come and visit, so please let family and friends know, to come on down and help us fundraise for our program!

24.01.2022 The bell is out on Term 2 and so is our Saturday School Homework Club! We've had a fantastic term, with some amazing new tutors helping our incredible students kick academic goals. We even saw our tutors spur the creative minds of students with some masterpiece folder decorating. Thank you so much to everyone involved for making Saturdays awesome, and for anyone new, if you'd like to get involved in any capacity please message us :). Hope you all have an amazing break and see you soon for Term 3!

24.01.2022 Hi everyone! We’ve come to the end of a wonderful term 1 at Saturday School! A very big thank you to everyone involved in our community these past few months. Here are some highlights of this past term, including a very exciting Easter egg hunt last week! We hope everyone enjoys their holidays and can’t wait to return in a few weeks for term 2!

23.01.2022 Hi everyone! Hope youre all having a lovely week. Weve had a wonderful start to 2019 so far and we would love to reflect on some of the highlights and outstanding achievements from members of our community in 2018. Firstly, we would like to say a very big thank you to the Whitehorse City Council for the $800 grant they provided us for the 2018/19 financial year. We are very grateful for their generosity. In August, we held our first tutor and student lunch, where tradition...al and delicious Sudanese dishes were served. We are hoping to make this an annual event and expand it to reach more members of our community. Keep your eyes peeled for invitations and more information later in the year. Also in August, the MUMUS Teddy Bear Hospital came to visit Saturday School. Students were able to learn about visiting the doctor, healthy eating and lifestyle habits in a unique and exciting way. A very big thank you to everyone who donated to make this day possible. To finish the year, we had a wonderful excursion to Scienceworks. This was both an educational and fun-filled day for everyone. A very big thank you to everyone who was involved in organising the event. It was a big success. Finally, we would like to congratulate former co-ordinator Sasha Odoi, who was awarded Outstanding Volunteer with the Centre for Multicultural Youth for her dedication and excellent leadership of Sudanese Saturday School. Well done Sasha! You can read more about this incredible achievement at https://www.cmy.net.au/winner-outstanding-volunteer-sasha-o. We are so excited for what the rest of 2019 will bring for us!!!

23.01.2022 Today was a such a sad day for our Saturday School group. Our favourite, warm and loving tutor Graham Daff, passed away last week. So today we came together with Graham's family and friends to celebrate Graham's life; to laugh, cry and smile at the moments and memories we shared with Graham. Graham volunteered as a tutor at Saturday School for near 10 years. In that time he brought us so much energy and love. The students will remember the fun of being paired up with Graham ...- how animated he was when he read to them, how energetic he was when he lead our singing "chewey chewey" the passion he shared in his love of SUDUKO, crosswords, card games (99&1/2) and pick up sticks We saw Graham every Saturday, and every Saturday he gave us all so much love. When Graham arrived, the kids would rush over over to greet him and clamor all over him to give him a hug. I (Sasha) as one of the program conveners now, would not even be at the program, and would not have met all the families and tutors had it not been for Graham. Graham had a gift for bringing people together and creating community. Saturday school is just that and more - we are a family - all thanks to the warmth and love that Graham gave that glued us together.

17.01.2022 And its a wrap! Our stall at the St Peters Parish Spring Fair was a great success. The students and tutors did an amazing job manning the stall and we cant say thanks enough! Most importantly we want to thank you, our followers and supporters who came to say hi, chatted to the students and volunteers, and purchased one (or many ) of our items on sale! While we are still adding up our total, we can confidently say we have made over $700! This is HUGE and will allow us to p...urchase more learning resources, plan more in and excursions to compliment the learning we do, and for 2018/2019 expand to provide formal learning support for adults too. We also want to say an enormous thank you to friends and former tutors who also came to lend us a hand at the stall and supervise the students. And of course thanks to the mothers Aliza and Sisilia who worked hard preparing and baking the South Sudanese biscuits- always a huge hit. For those of you who couldn't make it on the day, we have some keyrings and necklaces still for sale - we will post the photos shortly.

16.01.2022 Welcome back everyone for Term Two of 2018! Last week we awoke from our holiday slumber to smash some study goals and had awesome fun doing so. We had a huge attendance of both students and tutors alike and hope to keep it up throughout the term

15.01.2022 Remember all the hard work the students put in to make beads for our fundraiser stall at the St Peters Parish Spring Fair? Well today is the day and look how great theyve turned out! Come down, say hi and buy yourself a lovely piece of handmade jewellery! All funds raised will go towards learning resources for the program and our annual end of year excursion (Fair at 1038 Whitehorse Road, Box Hill, 9am-2pm)

15.01.2022 Well done on another wonderful, successful term at Saturday school! We finished on a high note today with our fantastic scavenger hunt! A very big thank you to everyone who helped put it together! Here are some highlights of the term, including our weekly swimming sessions and todays activity! 15.01.2022 Working Bee: We spent Saturday morning preparing for the Annual Spring Fair and Term 4 ahead! Thanks to the volunteers who helped out (special thanks to Jillian who came on her Birthday!) Check out the kids busy working on some beads to make necklaces and keyrings for our own stall!

14.01.2022 Thanks for visiting us Paul Hamer MP! It was great to connect with our local MP and share what we do on Saturdays!

14.01.2022 Time to share some great news! Whitehorse City Council has recognised our program as place for nurturing learning, growth and community connectedness. Several weeks ago, the Whitehorse City Council awarded a $500 minor grant to our group to help cover costs of learning resources for the next 12 months! As we run off a small budget, for our ever growing group, this is simply brilliant! So today, our first purchase with the funding was *WIFI DATA*. As simple as it seems, thi...s will allow students and parents with school tablets or Laptops, to access learning content linked to their school intranet and emails more effectively, and allow them to research for upcoming assignments on a wider platform of resources! The wifi modem was donated and set up for us for free (Thank you Daniel O) and now with the wifi data available, let the learning begin! Thank you to the Whitehorse City Council for increasing our opportunities to make an impact in learning!

14.01.2022 Wishing everyone a very Happy and Safe New Year for 2018. Thank you to everyone who has been an integral part of the Saturday School program. We have grown to 40 primary and high school students, 30+ volunteers, more excursions, more incursions, weekly activities, a womens support and family support capacity, plus all the fun of learning in a supportive environment every Saturday. This is all possible thanks to the support of Anglicare Victoria, St Peterss Parish Box Hill, Whitehorse City Council, Burwood RSPCA and many more community groups. Watch this space in 2018 as we grow and flourish with the support of you, the community.

11.01.2022 This weekend we had our final Saturday School class for Term 3! As always, a great opportunity to celebrate all the Term 3 Birthdays with cake and a small surprise! We will miss the students and volunteers for the school holiday break, but look forward to a lovely Spring Time Term 4! Have a safe a happy end of Term break everyone.

11.01.2022 Who likes gymnastics? Thanks to Eastern Gymnastics Club we discovered that we do! Last school holidays our students were given the opportunity to spend a morning at Eastern Gymnastics Club learning how to tumble, roll, jump and land in one piece!... We had a great time and it was a much appreciated school holiday activity. Thank you to the team at Eastern! We look forward to finding more school holiday possibilities for next year! A special shout out to Nidhi Achar, Shreya Achar for their amazing coordination.

10.01.2022 Term 3 at Saturday School has been jam-packed full of exciting and memorable activities! This term we continued with our swimming lessons as a part of the CAPS programme. It is safe to say that for every single student, these swimming lessons were a highlight for the term! Whether it was simply getting in the water for the very first time, learning to blow bubbles or doing a tumble-turn, everyone really made the most of their time in the water! We would love to say a big tha...nk you once more to the team at Surrey Park Swimming and the CAPS programme for making this possible! To celebrate all our achievements, we ended the term with a delicious feast and lunch cooked by the incredible mothers of our students! With lots of food, drinks and of course dessert, this lunch was a lovely opportunity for the entire community to come together to reflect upon the term, and to look towards the future and what it holds for us all. A big thank you to Paul Hamer MP and Peter Bol for stopping by for this special occasion! We hope everyone enjoys a well-deserved, relaxing holiday and we cant wait to see you all again at the start of Term 4!

10.01.2022 UPDATE: Saturday School excursion has been postponed due to severe weather warnings and state-wide calls to avoid unnecessary travel. We will reschedule it for Term 1 in 2018. More details will come regarding the new date.

08.01.2022 This week is World Refugee week (World Refugee day 20th June). As we reflect on the diversity of our volunteers, students and their families, we are thankful for the opportunity to work with and amongst so many inspiring individuals. Our goal is to continue to support migrant and refugee families in their journeys in Australia, and we are proud and excited seeing their growth so far. Our lives have certainly been enriched for it! #WorldRefugeeDay

07.01.2022 What a busy term it has been at Saturday School! A definite highlight of Term 2 has been our weekly swimming lessons for the students, made possible by Surrey Parks CAPS Programme (Community Access Program)! It is safe to say that all the students have had an absolute blast in the water, learning new skills, strokes and enjoying their time together! A massive thank you to Surrey Park Swimming for helping us organise such a wonderful experience for our students!

06.01.2022 As school starts across Victoria, we are excited to soon recommence Saturday School for 2018! In the midst of the difficult and disheartening media portrayal of our South Sudanese friends, colleagues, team mates and neighbours, we are thrilled to see a new media campaign reminding us to love and respect each other and our fellow South Sudanese Australians! We are very excited to see one of our very own Saturday School familys, feature in this ad:

06.01.2022 This Saturday was a special one for our group as the Teddy Bear Hospital came to visit us! The MUMUS Teddy Bear Hospital team were fantastic. Students scrubbed in for a surgery, learned about visiting the doctor and healthy eating and lifestyle habits. Thanks to Phoebe and Tess, our students even got to take a teddy bear home. A big thank you to everyone who donated to make that possible. ... Our own Dr. T Bear (Michael) was also a huge hit! Thank you to EVERYONE for working together to create such a memorable day.

04.01.2022 And we are off! Term 3 has begun and Saturday School is along for the ride. Our tutors and kids are diving headfirst into learning that will support their school experience. A BIG thank you to everyone who donated some pretty awesome toys. The children are having a fantastic time playing with them. We always love receiving donations that will enrich our childrens experience at Saturday School.

04.01.2022 On the first weekend of the September School Holidays a group of our Saturday school students and volunteers went to the Lord Somers and Powerhouse Atlas Camp. We danced, we ran, we swam in freezing cold water and drew closer friendships with one another and the other wonderful people who came on the camp. With 16 of our secondary school students we spent 2 nights and 2 days engaging with fantastic activities like creating artworks, playing capture the flag, and ultimately sharing with one another. We were so fortunate for the incredible experience and thankful to everyone who helped us get there and our amazing team! Lis Vinuri Devanga Tess Douglas Komal Grewal Michael Sandbach Lord Somers Camp And Power House

03.01.2022 We have returned to Term 4 full of excitement and energy! Over the last two weeks the students have been hard at work, reading story and chapter books, working on school projects, and even cracking some algebra concepts! We are proud of how much growth weve seen in the students this year. Its also been a busy month of birthday celebrations - Yom turned one and Machar celebrated his 12th birthday! Happy October birthday to all our wonderful tutors(Katy, Graham, Jillian, Bill, Tess, Prasan, Thy and Holly)

02.01.2022 We were all very lucky to have access to an intimate behind the scenes tour of the RSPCA! The excursion allowed the children to pet and/or feed cats and dogs, cows and chickens, and get nice and close to horses. They learnt about the importance of caring for animals and what animals need such as appropriate nutrition, shelter, grooming, company, exercise and climate control. And whilst initially the children were cautious and hesitant to get close to the animals, under the en...couragement and guidance of Leah and Sally who ran the session, the students came out of their shells, were super engaged and loved being amongst the animals. We thank Sally Meakin and Leah Munnery and the whole RSPCA education team, plus the RSPCA for the astounding work they do protecting and advocating for our fury and feathered friends, and educating the community on how we can be more conscientious about the choices and actions we make that can impact animals. See more

01.01.2022 And we're back! Gearing up for Term 4 and mostly importantly - the Box Hill Spring Fair! Saturday 13th 2018 9:00AM - 2:00PM St Peter's Anglican Church ... Saturday School has its own stall! We will be selling toys and traditional Sudanese biscuits. With some fun face painting for the kids. Come join us!

01.01.2022 Mini-Excursion: Term 3 holidays started with a Splash! Over 30 of our students plus our team of amazing volunteers and friends in the community, spent the afternoon at the Box Hill Aquatic Centre. Those gorgeous smiles on all their faces said it all, we had an absolutely brilliant time. We were very lucky to have volunteers like Penny, a trained swim teacher (amongst other talents) who spent time with the younger students going over fundamental swimming basics. Amazing work b...y all our other volunteers who supervised poolside or braved the outdoor pool, diving boards and slides! Thanks to the Box Hill Aquatic centre for having us, Anglicare Victoria for their continued support, and the greater Whitehorse community. We are now looking forward to our next excursion in December! ....Where will it be? Watch this space for fundraising and more! (Special thanks to Ishka DeSilva who donated part of her Zonta Women's Scholarship prize money to our program, which in turn supported this excursion)
