24.01.2022 Often under appreciated, the calf is one of the hardest working muscles in the body. Recent research from the University of Melbourne has shown that the calf muscles are critical to walking, jogging and running. They produce forces of 6-8 x Body weight every step you take!... For calf control and strength, check out our favourite exercises in our new blog. #saundersphysio

17.01.2022 More great research around the importance and function of the calf muscles now out of Marquette University. Authors Kristof Kipp and Hoon Kim recently published a paper concerning the relative contributions and capacities of the lower limb muscles during vertical jumping. The results may surprise you! They demonstrated that soleus, then gastrocnemius and finally quadriceps in order show highest potential to contribute to acceleration of the centre of mass during jumping. Int...erestingly the gluteus maximus muscle demonstrated relatively low contribution to jumping. Furthermore, they found that the soleus muscle operates at near maximum compared to the quadriceps operating with some reserve during vertical jumping. This further highlights that the maximal strength of the calf complex is an important variable in sports involving jumping. Read our recent blog about the calf to find out more! #saundersphysio #sportsphysio Reference: https://doi.org/10.1080/10255842.2020.1772764
