13.01.2022 "If the value of the land released is excluded from the calculation, in line with a suggestion from the NSW Treasury, the benefit/cost ratio falls to 0.5, meaning 50 cents is lost for each dollar spent. A separate, hypothetical, plan to proceed with urban redevelopment without removing the rail line had a benefit/cost ratio of around 2.4, meaning each dollar spent would deliver $2.40 in benefits."

12.01.2022 Dear SOR Members and supporters, We are reaching a turning point regarding the Transport Corridor in Newcastle. Our argument to the councillors is that a future government could realise the value of mass transport direct to the Eastern and central Newcastle precincts and that retaining the current zoning of the corridor, ( Transport : Rail) would facilitate such a planning process. Meanwhile the corridor could have temporary uses. I refute statements that SOR supports a do n...othing position. That has never been part of our proposals to Government and Council. We believe Newcastle will have reduced potential without an efficient transport provision. People are currently experiencing difficulties in accessing the beach, specialist doctors, legal representatives and educational institutions such as TAFE and the University city campus. This is not satisfactory for the Hunter Regional communities or for the people who live and work in Newcastle. I AM MAKING A FINAL REQUEST THAT EVEN IF YOU HAVE PUT IN A SUBMISSION PLEASE AGAIN WRITE TO ALL NCC COUNCILLORS TO ASK THEM TO VOTE AGAINST THE REZONING OF THIS VALUABLE TRANSPORT CORRIDOR. BEFORE NEXT TUESDAY 12TH DECEMBER, 2017. * NB please be respectful and polite in your communications. 10.01.2022 Dear Save Our Rail NSW friends and followers, Since our last meeting I became aware of a Development Application (DA) lodged with Newcastle City Council to modify Newcastle Station and carry out works in its surrounds. This was a very small notice in the Newcastle Herald and I had only a few days to put in an objection by the time I was shown the notification. I put together a lengthy submission on behalf of Save Our Rail and yesterday received a response that the DA had b...een approved despite opposing submissions. This means the fabulous heritage building, Newcastle Station will have bits of it removed to widen Scott Street, the spaces between the platforms will be filled in with concrete and the Heritage AA Company wall adjacent to it will be removed. 06.01.2022 MEDIA RELEASE SAVE OUR RAIL NSW INC IS NEWCASTLE LIGHT RAIL CORRUPT USE OF PUBLIC MONEY ? The leaked Transport Department document ( SMH 21/09/17 p.1) which has let out the secret report of the world’s most expensive light rail project costing $220 million per kilometre -also lays bare the fact that the project of cutting the Sydney to Newcastle rail line and replacing it with a dinky little piece of light rail is far from cost effective. The cost far outweighs the benefi...Continue reading
