25.01.2022 Great to see Brittany will be further exploring information from our Gouldian movement study around Wyndham.

25.01.2022 US GOULDIANS AGAIN SUPPORT THEIR AUSTRALIAN COUSINS Back in November last year we acknowledged a great donation to STGF from Laura Watkins in the USA. It was part of proceeds from a successful breeding season of Laura's Gouldians. Just recently Laura's Gouldians again supported a major donation. Clearly they have been breeding very well and we are very grateful for that. ... STGF relies on such donations to support our investments in research projects focussed on improved conservation outcomes for the natural population of Gouldians. Results of those investments are regularly reported here. Many thanks to Laura and her Lady Goulds!

23.01.2022 A BIG THANK YOU TO CAMSAL AVIARIES IN ADELAIDE for a recent donation. David and Diana generously donated $1000, their second big donation in the last year. Camsal support aviculturists in Adelaide with a full range of products, including the Naturally for Birds supplements, but are also committed to bird conservation. Many thanks to them. This donation will help with our upcoming effort to refurbish the STGF Nestbox network around Wyndham and Kununurra - a huge job. We will be checking out our supply of nestbox and getting the logistics in place during the annual Gouldian Count in early September. There are still a few spots available to volunteer for the Count, so if you are interested send an email to [email protected]

23.01.2022 The Gouldians are out about town in Brisbane. Six giant model Gouldians are adorning buildings and other structures in Brisbane as part of the Brisbane Festival. The Gouldians are the "Messengers of Brisbane" for the Festival. The models are huge - 8 to 10 metres long. Queensland Finch Society is also collaborating with the Queensland Museum to highlight Australia's great finches with our display aviary in place in the foyer of the Museum from Sept 4 to Sept 26. The focus is ...on conservation and diversity with the aviary displaying Gouldians (Black, Red and Yellow heads), Blackthroats (Northern and Southern subspecies), Diamond Firetails, Stars, Crimsons, Chestnuts, Doublebars and Zebra Finches. The display aviary is accompanied by two original volumes from John Gould's 7 Volume Birds of Australia. These volumes are priceless and are not normally on display. Overall great exposure for the Gouldian...

21.01.2022 Gouldian finches are also facing hard times https://www.abc.net.au//gouldian-finch-population/11972256

18.01.2022 A great observation of Gouldians near Broome. Would be significant if breeding activity is documented in the area.

18.01.2022 MANY THANKS TO CAMSAL AVIARIES, SOUTH AUSTRALIA. Among the regular supporters of STGF is Camsal Aviaries, a major bird shop and pet supply shop in Adelaide, South Australia. Camsal see many Gouldians through their shop, but are fully committed to support the conservation needs of wild Gouldians and they have been substantial donors now for several years. Many thanks.

12.01.2022 DO YOU KNOW THAT THE FINCHES FROM AUSTRALIA, ASIA AND AFRICA ALL SIT WITHIN THE FAMILY ESTRILDIDAE? IF YOU'RE FASCINATED BY THIS HUGELY DIVERSE FAMILY OF BIRDS NOW THERE IS A NEW BOOK FOR YOU. "Estrildid Finches of the World" by G J Huisman. Representing 9 years of research, this book covers all 34 genera, 145 species and 239 subspecies of the Estrildid finches. ... The book will be published in October and Naturally for Birds is very pleased to be the Australian Distributor for this great new addition to finch literature. The book consists of 396 A4 pages of descriptive and factual text, 1,052 full-colour photographs and 146 maps, printed on high quality paper and bound with a laminated hard cover. It has been reviewed by scientists as a fantastic volume, a magnificent book authoritative summary and beautifully showcased. All 145 species and their subspecies are described in detail and the unique distribution maps present the spread of all subspecies in different colours. The descriptions of the species are supported by beautiful photographs of the birds in their natural habitats. ORDERS In Australia and New Zealand the book can be ordered via NATURALLY FOR BIRDS - just email [email protected] for details. Price in Australia will be $150, inclusive of postage, or $140 if postage is not required. Publication Date is October 2021, but you can pre-order and reserve a copy now. Photos in the book represent the work of close to 300 photographers from 40 countries around the world, whose achievements were vitally important to this huge project. Not only did they allow use of their photos, but they also provided valuable information on the species directly through their first-hand field experience. In fact, some species have never been illustrated photographically before. Reviews Nigel Collar of BirdLife International, Gabriel Jamie and Claire Spottiswoode of Cambridge University and University of Cape Town, wrote the comprehensive foreword to the book, as quoted: One of the pleasures of paging through this fantastic volume is to see the full force of this avian diversity on show. Less obvious to most field observers, however, but beautifully showcased in this book, is the astonishing diversity in estrildid nestlings. This magnificent book provides an authoritative summary of the state of our knowledge, on which we hope the author, his many colleagues and contributing new estrildid fans inspired by this book, will continue to build. Kristof Zyskowski of Yale University, Peabody Museum of Natural History: I just wanted to say that I am very impressed with your book project and I am honoured to have my photos included. I think the book will be a fantastic resource with all the photos you managed to gather, especially those of nestling mouth markings. I also love the distribution maps showing subspecies ranges. Reserve your copy NOW - email to [email protected]

12.01.2022 DO YOU WANT TO HELP US RAISE THE PROFILE OF THE GOULDIAN FINCH AND ITS CONSERVATION NEEDS? HERE'S ONE WAY YOU CAN. Save the Gouldian Fund has been selected to be part of the ANiMOZ 2020 Vote to select key threatened species for inclusion in a unique card game for children. ANiMOZ is a game changer in the fight for conservation in Australia. Our kids need to learn what we’re doing to the planet, and how urgently we need to clean up our act. ANiMOZ is helping to deliver that me...ssage. All you need to do is go to animoz.world/vote Scan down to the Gouldian Finch page and VOTE for the Gouldian. It would be great to have the Gouldian win the vote and be included. So tell your friends too!

11.01.2022 Hoping you, my friends, can help here by voting as shown below

05.01.2022 Some great images of Gouldians at Parry’s! These aggregations of juveniles at water points might suggest a big population. Unfortunately we were unable to conduct a formal count in the Wyndham region this year due to COVID travel restrictions, but Mike and Elisabeth Fidler spent 10 weeks in the area surveying many of our count locations. The overall conclusion was that numbers were down on the previous year.

03.01.2022 STGF WELCOMES A MAJOR DONOR Our investments in science and on-ground conservation actions to support the Gouldian Finch rely on two sources of funds: - donations from caring individuals and companies - profits from Naturally for Birds Pty Ltd... Recently we have been very grateful to have north Queensland bird breeder and identity, Darrell Bresnahan, become a regular donor. Darrell is now providing a monthly donation which amounts to some thousands of dollars each year. This reflects Darrell's love of all finches and his commitment to support the wild Gouldian. This is a fantastic help as we gear up for the expensive process of refurbishing our network of nestboxes around the Wyndham/ Kununurra area. Many thanks Darrell.
