24.01.2022 A lazy Sunday morning read that may make you feel you got up on the wrong side of the bed:
22.01.2022 When is Pascoe Vale Outdoor pools turn? Would love to see this for PVOP. https://conversations.moreland.vic.gov.au/fawkner-leisure-c
22.01.2022 This why it's a good idea to extend the Outdoor Pool season into April. We are often getting beautiful days during Easter and School Holidays in April. How good would it have been to go for a swim on the long weekend, especially because a lot of travel plans to QLD have been cancelled.
20.01.2022 Let's keep our outdoor pools open! https://m.facebook.com/groups/savefawknersoutdoorpools/permalink/1400029893696775/
18.01.2022 Few photos of the eclipse tonight from our pool. Best I could do from iPhone camera

13.01.2022 The community we live in: SAVING FAWKNER’S OUTDOOR POOLS When Anna Lemcke and Damir Mitric from the Save Fawkner's Outdoor Pools (SFOP) group first heard about ...Moreland City Council’s (MCC) plans to upgrade the Fawkner Leisure Centre at a cost of $20 million, they were not concerned. ‘Because it was always advertised as an upgrade we thought it was going to be a good thing,’ says Anna. ‘It was one reason why many people didn’t attend the MCC focus groups in March.’ Damir adds ‘but now people are really disappointed in the engagement process. Even though MCC have never come out and said they want to close the outdoor pool, they’ve also never reassured the community that this won’t happen. It’s why people are so concerned.’ On 2 May, SFOP started a petition and so far there are about 1300 signatures. ‘But once we get it translated, we’ll start door knocking,’ Damir says. ‘We’ll easily have 2,500 signatures by the next council meeting.’ The Fawkner outdoor pool was constructed in 1964 and transferred to MCC in 1994 from the Broadmeadows municipality when local government boundaries were redrawn. Public pools are often seen as having a lifespan of about 20-25 years, which is why MCC claims the pool needs to be entirely replaced. But Faye, another SFOP member, argues that ‘one of the roles of a council is to asset manage. If they’ve known the outdoor pool was nearing the end of its life span, then why haven’t they put aside the money to replace it?’ In it’s ‘Aquatic & Leisure Strategy 2018’, MCC states that the existing outdoor pool at the Fawkner Leisure Centre be ‘modified and repurposed’ while introducing ‘outdoor water play and fun water features’. SFOP argues that these types of features are only suitable for young children, and not the teenagers who frequent the pool when it is open in summer. On a beautiful sunny day, who wants to be in an indoor pool when you could be lying on the grass outside, chatting with friends and watching the world go by as either yourself or your kids splash in a pool? As the campaign to Save Pascoe Vale Outdoor pool has shown, outdoor pools are seen by some as the heart and soul of a community and the fight to save them can be fierce. Yet councils keep proposing to close or repurpose outdoor pools. Why? Some of the reasons include the limited operating hours, the high maintenance costs and the deterioration of the ageing infrastructure. In contrast, multi-purpose leisure centres, with their extended opening hours, can offer program flexibility and more revenue opportunities for MCC. SFOP is concerned, however, that the potential revenue opportunities are a key driver in the redesign of the leisure centre. The pool's history and the social benefits of unique community assets like outdoor pools needs greater consideration. SFOP argue that MCC has failed to recognize that the outdoor pool is not just a place to swim and cool off, but a gathering place in the Fawkner community. ‘The Oak Park Leisure Centre is great,’ adds Anna, ‘but there are people in Fawkner who will only go to our local pool because that’s where their community goes and that’s where they feel comfortable.’ At last month’s meeting, Thea a 10 year old Fawkner resident asked MCC why they wanted to close the outdoor pool. In response to her question, the Mayor stressed that council had just started the consultation process and encouraged everyone to participate to let council know what they want. But for an engagement process to be meaningful, there needs to be transparency and honesty. For some in the Fawkner community, this has so far not yet occurred. #fawkner #moreland #northcoburg #community Photo kindly supplied by Save Fawkner's Outdoor Pools
11.01.2022 Tomorrow is going to be a hot one, what better place to spend it than at the pool. Enjoy your swim :)
10.01.2022 It is sad that the community has to continuously fight to keep our beautiful outdoor pools in Moreland open and running now and in the future. Moreland has such great outdoor pool facilities and opportunity to make them even better. We should be proud of our outdoor pools rather looking at options to close them. The save Fawkner Pool team are planning a 'Summer in July' event to support the pool. If you have time come down and support this cause on 3rd July 2021 at 10am.

09.01.2022 Lots of momentum happening in this campaign and I’m very proud to be involved. I was pleased to see that there was a response to my question in the Conversation...s open forum, but more discussion surely needs to happen too as we continue to develop our aims :) Let’s keep talking (and listening!) Thanks all
