23.01.2022 http://worldsightday.org.au/ In the spirit of World Sight Day, we'd like to recognise the important work of the sector in treating diabetic eye disease. The findings of a uniquely Australian-focussed study involving ophthalmologists and patients from 25 Australian ophthalmology clinics, were presented by Save Sight Institutes Associate Professor Samantha Fraser-Bell at the EURETINA conference in Paris, France recently. Over 1.7 million Australians are currently living with ...diabetes and have an increased risk of developing eye complications, including complete loss of vision. This study shows promising results which further our understanding of safe and effective treatments for diabetic eye disease including diabetic macula oedema (DME). DME, the leading cause of preventable vision loss from diabetes, affects an estimated 72,000 Australians. Early detection through regular screening, combined with effective management is essential to ensure the best outcomes for patients with diabetes. See more

22.01.2022 Today is World Sight Day and at Guide Dogs, we see firsthand the challenges that come from low vision or blindness. That's why we encourage you to keep up with ...your regular eye tests and seek advice if you notice a change in your vision. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), it's estimated that 2.2 billion people worldwide have a vision condition and of those, at least 1 billion have a condition that could've been prevented or is yet to be addressed. Here's an example of what the world might look like if you had one of these vision conditions: Age-related Macular Degeneration, Cataract, Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy, Retinitis Pigmentosa and Neurological Vision Impairment. If you experience low vision or blindness, how would you describe your vision? [Image description: A 3x2 image grid of a yellow Labrador in harness looking front on to the camera. Each image shows how the dog would appear if a person's vision is affected by each vision condition.]

21.01.2022 https://www.ophthalmologyglaucoma.org//S2589-419/fulltext SSI's paper on glaucoma AI has been the most cited article in the journal, Ophthalmology Glaucoma over the past 12 months! The study found a deep learning algorithm to be more accurate than ophthalmologists in detecting glaucomatous discs using monoscopic disc photographs. These images are easier to obtain in a large population, highlighting the AIs potential use for population-based disease screening or telemedicine programs.

14.01.2022 http://www.savesightinstitute.org.au//cataract-anterior-s/ In recognition of World Glaucoma Week, were highlighting Professors John Grigg and Robyn Jamiesons work translating research into everyday clinical care in their cataract, anterior segment and glaucoma project. Patients with cataracts and small corneas are particularly prone to developing glaucoma. John and Robyn have successfully applied a form of gene sequencing to identify new and existing variations of these ...disorders. Targeted next-generation sequencing (NGS) enables rapid identification of common and rare genetic variations. This is a useful strategy which the team is optimising to develop the first comprehensive diagnostic testing for these disorders in the world. This work has been translated into clinical practice with the tests now available in the clinical setting. Following the groups work in childhood glaucoma, Professors Grigg and Jamieson were invited to join the Congenital Glaucoma Research Network (CGRN), contributing to the World Glaucoma Associations 9th consensus statement on the diagnosis and management of paediatric glaucoma. If youre interested in supporting their research, follow the link below! https://secureau.imodules.com/s/965/18form/form.aspx

13.01.2022 In recognition of Macula Month, were highlighting the work of our Eye Electrophysiology Clinic! Eye electrophysiology an increasingly essential part of diagnosing a range of ophthalmic conditions. Tests that measure macula function are essential in determining the cause of vision loss in a timely fashion, especially if the underlying cause is treatable. Our Eye Electrophysiology Clinic offers over 10 different retinal and optic nerve assessments that have helped diagnose i...nherited macula diseases, acquired macula diseases, autoimmune macula disorders and macular toxicities. Without these tests, many of these illnesses would have remained undiagnosed, as they are not always obvious through other examination methods. To read more about the clinics outstanding work, visit http://www.savesightinstitute.org.au//visual-electrodiagn/ *If you have any inquiries regarding electrodiagnostic testing services, please contact our Clinic Team at [email protected] (02) 9382 7395

07.01.2022 In recognition of World Diabetes Day, we're pleased to showcase two clinical initiatives from A/Prof Andrew White, Dr Hamish Dunn, medical student Lakni Weerasinghe, and PhD candidate Belinda Ford. (Photos courtesy of Andrew White et al.) The C-Eye-C is now a flagship model of care in which new and stable diabetics are screened and assessed by store and forwarded remote telemedicine. This model cuts costs and keeps 70% of patients from requiring hospital appointments, freeing... space for doctors to address more serious cases. Belinda Ford is currently studying this initiative for her PhD. DR SPOC is an initiative developed by A/Prof White and Dr Dunn for diabetic outreach using mobile retinal photography. It picks up 3X the rate of vision threatening retinopathy in the community, over half of which was previously undiagnosed, and is now to be used as a model of care for aboriginal health starting in a Kildare Rd GP practice, Blacktown mid November. Liverpool Hospital has also newly picked this up. Medical student Lakni Weerasinghe recently completed an outstanding project on this.
