19.01.2022 More on the Save Strathallan Open Space public meeting from Colin Brooks MP. His active work on the campaign has been invaluable.

18.01.2022 Save Strathallan Open Space Communtiy Coalition's ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING The annual general meeting of the incorporation is to be held at 7:30 pm this Wednesday, 24th October and will be held in the clubhouse of the Strathallan Golf Club, 100 Main Drive Bundoora. Details of the AGM, nomination forms, membership forms etc can be read and downloaded from the "Get Involved" Page at https://www.savestrathallanopenspace.com.au/ .

13.01.2022 RESOLUTIONS - Public meeting 17 June 2018 1. It is the primary objective of the Community, attending this Public Meeting, that the area of land known as the Strathallan Open Space be permanently maintained and preserved as currently zoned and utilized to facilitate the promotion and protection of the environmental values of the land and its utilization as a community recreational amenity for the enjoyment of future generations. 2. It is acknowledged that the five-year lease a...greement to be offered to the Strathallan Golf Club as proposed by the La Trobe University Council, is appreciated and a significant step forward in resolving the underlaying issue of the ongoing future use and zoning of the Strathallan Open Space and that the University Council should be commended for taking this decision. 3. It is sought that La Trobe University Council, the Darebin & Banyule Councils, State and Federal Members of Parliament, Strathallan Golf Club, Save Strathallan Open Space Community Coalition and other relevant parties, make a commitment to work together in formulating an arrangement that will secure the permanent current use and zoning of the Strathallan Open Space. 4. Should the Strathallan Golf Club cease to utilize the land as a golf course it is sought that the all relevant parties, as detailed in the previous Motions, made a commitment to ensure the permanent usage of the Strathallan Open Space as currently zoned Public Park/Recreation and that such usage will not adversely impact on the environmental values of the land and the local community as a recreational amenity. CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY

13.01.2022 Congratulations to the volunteers who have put together the amazing new local history website ‘Mont Park to Springthorpe’! There’s some great information about ...the Springthorpe, Gresswell, Larundel area from the First People, military hospital, psychiatric institution through to today’s mix of housing, bushland, open space and heritage buildings. I went to the launch of the website today and was impressed by the amount of work that’s been put into this project. Check out the website: https://www.montparktospringthorpe.com See more

09.01.2022 "A comparison of the vegetation structure and diversity in different types of green spaces revealed that golf courses are actually quite similar to remnant vege...tation... Golf courses also boast higher bird species richness, higher counts of breeding bird activity, higher native bee species richness and higher vegetation complexity." This article is so interesting for its relevance to Strathallan Golf Club, where you can often spot kangaroos, and at times the endangered swift parrot. We must protect our precious open space. 08.01.2022 Our wonderful speakers...

06.01.2022 This is a glimpse of what we have been fighting to protect! I took this photo this afternoon between the 8th and 7th fairways on the Strathallan Golf Course (sorry about the poor quality but I only had my phone on me). If you look closely, you can see quite a few more roos in the background. Unfortunately, about a minute after I took this photo, a golden retriever that was not on its lead chased after the mob and they bounced off back to the Habitat Link. I managed to give the dog's owner a mouth-full regarding my thoughts around walking dogs off-lead!

05.01.2022 When the first Europeans arrived in the Bundoora area (formerly the parish of Keelbundoora) they noted its ‘parkland’ appearance; well spaced trees and an under...storey of grasses, herbs and forbs. It was decided that this would make it the perfect area for farmland. The area now known as the La Trobe Wildlife Sanctuary was first surveyed in 1837 by William Wedge-Drake to allow the sale of the land. It was common practice for surveyors to blaze a tree (make a large triangular cut with an axe) as a way of marking out a property boundary. There are several trees within the Sanctuary which still bare these marks, including this tree to the west of the Main Lake. In 1904-7, the land was purchased from grazier Malcolm Macleod (possibly sometimes referred to as McLean?) in order to establish the Mont Park Psychiatric Hospital. The land was once again surveyed and on the back of this tree is a large arrow head scar. Although they have weathered over time, if you look closely at the third photo, you can see the letters ‘PWD’ inscribed on the flat surface of the scar; this is the mark of the then Public Works Department. At the base of the tree there is also a rusty nail. It is thought that the Public Works Department used the nail to mark base point zero in order to survey the land. 03.01.2022 Beautiful thanks Te Camz!

01.01.2022 Fantastic crowd shot of the Save Strathallan Open Space 17 June 2018 Rally by attendee Craig Sharkie who writes: "Great turnout in 5degrees and driving rain. The clubhouse packed, and overflow listening on speakers outside. It shows just how much this open space means to the local community and the environment that we are all custodians of. Metaphorically we're Back in the clubhouse after a strong first round , but you don't win the tournament on day 1. We need a few more solid rounds. Thanks to SOSOS volunteers for taking up this cause. And I hope people continue to join the golf club, use the amenities and land, and volunteer to help as the challenging times continue.
