Knowledge around wild bilby populations, as well as their predators and other herbivores, across Southwest Queensland is essential for our future work and bilby releases. It will help us understand how the bilby responds to drought, threatening processes and land management. It is also essential to continue our bilbies having healthy genetic diversity. What does this project entail? Aerial surveys and ground data across thousands of kilometres in Southwest Queensland are to be completedcovering private pastoral properties and conservation reserves. 80% of the extant (wild) bilby populations across Australia are on country managed by First Nations peoplesit is only in Queensland where they occur on private pastoral land. We really want this project to help us understand how graziers are managing their land to allow for the existence of bilbies. How will this come to life? This is where we need YOUR HELP! This is no small feat, and funds are needed to fund the practical elements of this work. 19.01.2022 Did you see our announcement last week about our planned upgrade to our Charleville bilby breeding centre? If so, we will link the post in the comments below! We urgently need your support to get this project off the ground in early 2021, so if you are able to, please donate today: https://bit.ly/3peueQF In terms of expanding, funds are needed to allow us to increase annual breeding potential to double. For this, five creching/breeding pens, new nesting boxes, enclosu...re furnishings, an extension for a new hospital, microchip readers, scales, plus more equipment, is needed. And of course, there will be an increase in food (kibble and live food)! In terms of upgrading the existing facility, this is essential to ensure our bilbies feel safe and conformable as possible (like little sleepy Cliff, pictured! ). For this, seven new catch up/feeder trap pens, heating systems and new bedding is needed. In terms of maintenance, these funds are vital to ensure the welfare of the bilbies within the centre. If we are to double capacity, we will also need to take on another part-time keeper. We have secured access to a small section of land directly next to our Charleville breeding facility that will allow us to upgrade and expandmeaning we can considerably increase contribution to our bilby breeding program. It is reasonable to assume that a doubling of the facility size (which is what is planned) would enable us to manage double the number of breeding pairs as we currently have. This breeding facility is so important as it provides the foundations to grow the 60-80 bilbies we estimate are currently roaming freely at Currawinya. The Charleville facility has also been identified as a site that is suitable to maximise the genetic diversity of both captive and wild speciesso the expansion and maintenance of it is crucial to the ongoing genetic diversity required to establish an insurance population of bilbies for the next 100 years. This planned upgrade will provide more capacity for breeding pairs, more creching facilities (where we condition bilbies for release), more equipment to ensure we can continue providing the optimum animal welfare, as well as safe working conditions for our husbandry staff and volunteers. This is a huge step towards our goal of establishing free-living bilbies in protected reserves across Australia, to the point where we have an insurance population of 10,000 bilbies. 10.01.2022 Did you know the bilbies were thought to be entirely extinct in Queensland in the 80s? It was thanks to Frank and Peter, Save the Bilby Fund’s founders, that these unique animals were saved. We are working to continue their legacy today and now have nearly 80 bilbies free-living in our protected reserve in Currawinya!

05.01.2022 Hey there bilby loversit's one of the new bilbies on the block here, Hanger! It has just been over a month now since I jumped out of the pouch here at Charleville and I tell ya what, life is pretty cruisey. Apparently my family history dates back THOUSANDS of years, but more recently, my mum, Bobbie, was a wild bilby who was brought to this Save the Bilby Fund breeding facility. My siblings and I are playing a big role in making sure bilbies in protected areas across Au...stralia have the right genetics. Mum feels really comfortable here because the Fund is set up with the right equipment to monitor us and look after us. Currently I am in a big breeding pen with my sweet little brother Mac, safely inside a nesting burrow mum has made for us as we are not weaned yet (but we are getting stronger by the day, make no mistake!). The word around town here is that Save the Bilby Fund needs donations so they can upgrade their Charleville facilities so they can breed more of me, to ensure my unique race can thrive in the decades ahead! Some of these plans cover making more breeding and creching pens (just like the one I’m in now) and buying more equipment (like this comfy igloo bed that I am pictured in, that was a good day).
