22.01.2022 So.... here we are about to enter the second half of 2020, and remembering that the state government commitment for funding of The Hopgood runs out in two days time, unless they act on the "possibility of extension until the end of 2020." Even then, it's more drip feeding when what we want is a guarantee of funding into the future. Join me in (1) writing again to Minister Gardiner and Premier Marshall and reminding them of their expressed support for the theatre and (2) for the month of July make the pic attached below your cover photo on facebook! In July, we cry, "SAVE THE HOPGOOD FOREVER!"

11.01.2022 PLEASE CAN YOU CONTACT YOUR LOCAL COUNCILLORS ABOUT THE HOPGOOD? What is the Future of the Hopgood Theatre? This question could well be the subject of Confidential Item 14.1 of the Agenda for Tuesday’s 21 July Council meeting. We don’t know what the details are but our best guess is that Council is seeking authority to get the ball moving on the Hopgood after nearly two years of little progress with State Government through TAFE and Ministers Pisoni and Gardiner. We know that...Continue reading

01.01.2022 WHEN WILL THE HOPGOOD THEATRE REOPEN? Right now we don’t know the answer to that question. Country Arts SA is still managing the theatre and we think that the drip funding will continue to the end of the year. We ask why the Hopgood Theatre wasn’t included in the State’s new Arts Plan launched in 2019 or in any of its updates this year?... Currently through the Arts Plan the government is considering a series of 45 recommendations, but none of these recommendations include the Hopgood Theatre. We think given the devestating effects of COVID 19 that under recommendation 1 of the Plan Ensure sectors thrive throughout the year Objective 1.2 Develop a space activation plan for use by independent artists and the small to medium sector to optimise existing venues and spaces across Adelaide and regional centres that the Hopgood Theatre should be included in that space activation plan. Do you agree? Furthermore, we think that the Hopgood Theatre should be included in Objective 1.6 Develop a five-year revitalisation plan of regional arts centres as creative hubs within their respective communities. This objective includes further consultation with Country Arts SA and other regional stakeholders to develop a plan for regional arts centres as creative hubs. But we know that we haven’t been consulted or informed or whether the Hopgood Theatre will be included in this objective. Do you think it should? Finally, Recommendation 3 of the Arts Plan says Consider regional and rural South Australia Objective 3.1 Maintain Country Arts SA as a Statutory Authority to support arts and cultural development across the state. and Objective 3.2 Revitalise existing regional arts centres as creative community hubs and invest in new centres to meet the needs of the local community and elevate their role and standing. and Objective 3.3 Reform governance options for regional arts venues to ensure effective engagement with local government and alignment with local community needs. We think that the members of Save the Hopgood Theatre and local school and theatre organisations should be included in all these planning objectives. Arts SA has said if you would like to be consulted in relation to the government’s response to a particular recommendation in the Arts Plan, please email [email protected], outlining your interest. Would you email the Arts SA and let them know about the government’s response in relation to the Hopgood Theatre? We hope you will and let us know what kind of response you get. We think that by pressuring the Premier’s Arts department the Hopgood Theatre will be opened sooner rather than later.
