05.01.2022 The Queen’s Birthday public holiday is coming up on Monday 14 June in most states and territories (except QLD and WA). Your last chance to make the most of a long weekend for a while could be in jeopardy if you get a request to work. So what are the rules about being asked to work a holiday? Like many things, it comes down to what’s reasonable. Employers can ask employees to work if their request is reasonable. Employees can say no to public holiday work if they have reason...able grounds. What’s reasonable depends on several factors, like: your personal circumstances, (eg. family responsibilities) whether you’ll get more pay (eg. penalty rates) the needs of the workplace the type of work you do whether your salary includes work on a public holiday whether you’re full-time, part-time, casual or a shiftworker how much notice you’ve been given to work the amount of notice you give when refusing to work. Find out more about working and refusing to work on public holidays here: https://www.fairwork.gov.au//pu/working-on-public-holidays Save the date: If you’re in QLD, the Queen's Birthday public holiday is on Monday 4 October and Monday 27 September for those in WA (some regional areas in WA hold the public holiday on a different date).
