16.01.2022 I would like to begin this post by recognising the traditional owners of these lands and pay my respects to elders past, present and emerging. What an amazing afternoon we had celebrating NAIDOC week! I was privileged to be able to observe a wonderful, engaging and meaningful flag raising ceremony- carried out by our local young people- our next generation of leaders. The afternoon included dancing and song, a smoking ceremony, indigenous history, food, games, activities an...d most importantly, a wonderful community of people coming together to recognise that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. A huge thank you goes out to all of the people involved in today. There are so many that I can’t name them all but some special mentions go to all the elders who were present as well as Aunty Flow and Uncle Ron, Leisha, and the organisers, Krista Ellis, Michelle Watson, Shannon, Madonna Spence-Gibson, Hazel Cowburn, Global Care Bribie Island, Bribie Island Lions Club, Save the Children Australia, RampAttak Indoor Skatepark, Youth Advocacy Centre, KYC Caboolture, Pumicestone Indigenous Education and Employment Council, and everyone else who contributed, volunteered or attended- it really was a fabulous afternoon! #alwayswasalwayswillbe #NAIDOC2020

Now how many of you are guilty of answering like this when in actual fact what you should be saying is I’m not okay, I need your help, could you give me a hand? Today is R U OK day. Today there is more to say after R U OK. ... Today, and every day, it is ok not to be ok.

11.01.2022 Did you know that there have been more than 2,600 domestic violence offences committed in our region this year alone? That is more than 8 offences each day, and that is just those that are reported! As a result of these terrifying statistics, Moreton Bay Regional Council, in collaboration with the local domestic and family violence sector, has launched our first region-wide campaign to raise awareness of this type of abuse in our region. By shining a spotlight on these inex...cusable actions, we can help increase the number of people seeking support for themselves and others. Each and every one of us has an important role to play when it comes to stopping violence in our community, workplace and homes. If you or someone you know is experiencing violence or abuse please recognise the signs and reach out for support by going to mbrc.qld.gov.au/raro. Abuse and violence in any form is simply unacceptable and we are taking a stand. Share the below image and spread the word. Moreton Bay says no to domestic and family violence! Recognise and Reach Out #recogniseandreachout #moretonbaysaysno

03.01.2022 For many years I have been advocating for council to provide greater opportunities and support for young people in Division One through either a PCYC, a youth space, youth activities or youth services. Whilst there is a PCYC and many services, support and activity opportunities in the greater Caboolture area, due to our location and limited public transport throughout Division One, these are difficult to access for our young people. Consequently Council is undertaking a you...th services gap analysis for Bribie Island and the broader community and we want to hear from you! If you are a parent, grandparent, concerned community member or young person in our community, your say is important. This survey will help guide Council’s approach to the provision of infrastructure and services for young people moving forward and will assist me to continue advocating for what YOU identify are important priorities for our community.
