24.01.2022 PetRescue's in-house "rescue" group 'Home2Home' sells a bonded pair of small breed dogs for $700 (x2?) so that, in their words, their program; "... can free up space in rescue organisations for vulnerable pets who don’t have a safe home to rely on, including pets in danger of being killed in pounds, and those at risk in their community." They're taking first dibs on desirable dogs. How is that #respectingRescue?... https://www.petrescue.com.au/listings/820455

22.01.2022 Victorians, please participate.

21.01.2022 A new item raising funds for rescue dogs, with no actual real-life animal receiving even a cent of that money. A full $2 from every one of these new wine sets sold goes into "PetRescue’s pet adoption programs" which is code for wages, staff and offices. Imagine what that money could do for real rescues. Sit Stay Society can be contacted at [email protected] https://sitstaysocietywines.com.au/

21.01.2022 "When all your paid staff are fundraisers, professional communicators and marketing staff, and you have none - not a one - rescue pets to personally take care of... it's very easy to have lots of resources to spend on making ever more captivating fundraising solicitations. Rescue groups are completely outgunned by PetRescue's intensive, aggressive and increasingly targeted fundraising campaigns..." http://savingpets.com.au//are-you-rescuing-through-the-hol

21.01.2022 And now, the final insult to the welfare of cats - a new humane cat management desexing trial is available everywhere except WA. Because thanks to these cat laws, TNR and every variation of it, is now 'illegal' in WA. So while our cat laws haven't worked to protect cats, we can't actually implement the programs that would. "This trial will see a new community-based cat management program implemented across selected low-socioeconomic suburbs located in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Queensland."

20.01.2022 Pet store owner shocked when farm producing puppies is found to be a puppy farm.

18.01.2022 What would you say if asked to brainstorm how to solve the problem of pounds?

18.01.2022 More dogs being advertised by PetRescue - bypassing the judgement and experience of animal rescuers, in favour of selling on their website, the dogs of owners who don't want them any more. https://www.petrescue.com.au/groups/11824 Please tag relevant breed rescues and state rescues.

16.01.2022 Imagine your organisation’s brand being so on the nose, that your major sponsor names, the Guide Dogs, Assistance Dogs Australia, Zoos Victoria and Mackillop Family Services... but you get referred to as just; ... a donation to help pets find their new homes Oof. Turns out reputation **is** everything PetRescue. #RespectingRescue... https://em.petstock.com.au/pub/sf/FormLink

14.01.2022 In 2015, PetRescue appointed a new Director (https://bit.ly/3hl6Cob). He gave a presentation this week featuring how PetRescue fits into his portfolio which also includes Agworld (farm management software which "optimises profitability") and Icetana (a patented AI assisted surveillance software). If you want to know why PetRescue behaves like a for-profit company, simply look at their management team.

13.01.2022 PetRescue's latest #happytail brand ambassador needs help; will PetRescue step up and provide it? Or is PetRescue's rescuing entirely fake? http://savingpets.com.au//why-fake-rescuing-lets-pets-and-

12.01.2022 Great work being done by pet lovers in Victoria!

09.01.2022 There are volunteers in the community who will go to extraordinary lengths to help stabilise and reduce cat populations humanely and kindly on behalf of local councils. And there are people who hurt and disrespect animals, often for the thrill of causing harm. Choose who you are aligning with carefully when you advocate in cat management - how we treat unowned cats might be animal welfare’s most important test.

08.01.2022 Fancy that - the same 'temperament tests' that on-the-ground animal rescuers called ineffective, unreliable and unfair, when put under scientific scrutiny, turn out to be ineffective, unreliable and unfair. For years major shelters have defended these tests as a valid tool, and as justification to kill shelter dogs who 'failed' such tests. Millions of dogs have lost their lives in the name of these tests. http://savingpets.com.au//twenty-five-years-of-temperament... And yet - as the RSPCA walks back their position - they still defend their right as 'animal experts' to be able to kill pets with impunity, without community oversight and without mandated consultation with rescue groups in the community who have often been willing to save these same animals. In short, the RSPCA has put their own processes under scientific scrutiny and they've failed; grassroots rescuers were right all along. But the RSPCA still claims to be the unquestionable authority on animal sheltering and animal welfare... and continues to ignore and deride the other agencies in the community that for decades have been achieving better results without even a fraction of the financial resources.

06.01.2022 No corporate hackathon required; just hard work and a real understanding of what it will take to reform our pound system.

06.01.2022 A fantastic piece - congratulations Julie and the team at 4 Paws Animal Rescue Inc !!

04.01.2022 Gumdrop is the first pit bull adopted out by the Denver Animal Shelter in more than 30 years: http://bit.ly/38oBS4s. His adoption was made possible after Denv...er residents voted to repeal the city’s three-decade "breed" ban in the last election: https://dpo.st/3oTp8ZT. And because of Denver’s step forward, neighboring Aurora, CO, is moving ahead with doing something similar. The decision should not be difficult: 50% of dogs labeled as pit bulls lacked DNA breed signatures of breeds commonly classified as pit bulls: https://goo.gl/R423Yq; Dogs targeted for breed discriminatory laws are not more likely to bite, do not bite harder, and such bans do not result in fewer dog bites or bite-related hospitalization rates: https://goo.gl/pbLDWW; - Enforcement of the ban is expensive with no measurable impact on public safety; costing Denver taxpayers $100,000,000 over the last 30 year: https://bit.ly/36PwAPm. Bans also negatively impact surrounding communities and rescue groups who have to take on the burden for such regressive and selfish policies in order to save the lives of these dogs. Denver’s new law is not a full repeal of breed discriminatory legislation, as other cities have done recently, but it is an important step in that direction. It means dogs identified as pit bulls can legally live in the city for the first time in decades. It allows these dogs to be adopted. It stops these dogs from dying simply for the way they look. And it keeps families together by ending the specter of an officer coming to the door, taking a dog off a couch, driving them to the pound, killing them, and discarding their lifeless bodies in a garbage bag. When a city has a breed-specific ban, good dogs die. It’s that simple: https://dpo.st/327bfgQ. Good dogs like Gumdrop. 04.01.2022 Rabbit foster carers needed in WA

04.01.2022 Citing that they have become "uncomfortable" with being associated with the website, they announced the departure on their facebook page along with giving PetRescue a thorough schooling on why they've chosen to leave.

02.01.2022 The Dogs’ Refuge Home in Shenton Park is a beloved Western Australian charity and is likely the largest physical dog shelter in WA. It was a foundation member of the PetRescue website - joining literally days after the site launched in 2004. And after nearly two decades, they have this week deleted their PetRescue account. Citing that they have become "uncomfortable" with being associated with the website, they announced the departure on their facebook page;... ----------------- "We have made the decision to no longer list our dogs on the Pet Rescue website for a number of reasons, although we do value the added exposure it has given us over the years. For anyone who has donated to us via the Pet Rescue site we thank you in the last 14 years we have received a total of $920." ----------------- Next week PetRescue is running #PetHack - a vanity project inviting the tech, retail and advertising sectors to join them in "solving" the homeless pet problem. But while PetRescue are schmoozing corporates and waxing lyrical with, in their words, "the brightest minds in tech"... ... one by one their rescue group members are quietly dropping PetRescue's services in favour of other platforms who genuinely appreciate and support the rescue community. #RespectingRescue

02.01.2022 **URGENT HELP IS NEEDED** We have recently been made aware of an application for the development of two massive breeding kennels in South Australia! The...se two applications are for containment of up to THREE HUNDRED.....YES.......300 BREEDING DOGS!!!! These applications are currently open for public review and we NEED your help to oppose the applications for development! But we only have until 4pm AEDT on THIS WEDNESDAY 11th November 2020 to get all the emails in! ****WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP***** 1. Send an email to [email protected] 2. You MUST title the email "Objection to Development Applications 312/311/2020 and 312/353/2020" 3. You can either copy and paste the email we have drafted below and in the comments, or tell them in your own words why you don't want ANOTHER puppy factory being built. 4. Sign off with your FULL NAME - we want the council to know that these are genuine emails of concern and opposition to the development. We only have two days to get as many submissions as we can in to let the Adelaide Plains Council know that we do not want another puppy factory making dogs lives miserable! Should you wish to view these applications they can be found at https://www.apc.sa.gov.au//applications-on-public-notifica COPY AND PASTE THE BELOW TEXT INTO AN EMAIL TO [email protected] Dear Mr Jacks, I am writing to you to express my objection to the following planned development applications that have been lodged with the Adelaide Plains Council: 312/311/2020 and 312/353/2020 I note that these applications are for the construction of 114 dog kennels with the aim of containing up to 300 dogs combined, along with construction of detached dwellings. I am sure you are an animal lover yourself so would understand that dogs are companion animals and need positive and regular human interaction in order to thrive - they should never be kept in cages like those proposed and forced to live in the elements - especially the extreme temperatures that are experienced in Two Wells where these developments are intended. I object to these developments for a number of reasons: 1. These developments are the definition of Puppy Factory Farming - the clear intention of these developments is to breed dogs in huge number for financial gain. I know of no ethical dog breeder who would even consider breeding this huge amount of dogs as they wouldn't possibly be able to care adequately for them all. 2. Puppy Farmed dogs are very often denied adequate food, water, shelter and bedding. Their veterinary needs are also often disregarded. Their mental health and stimulation is almost always disregarded, and with such a huge number of breeding dogs they will be deprived of companionship, positive social interaction and adequate physical exercise. 3. There are already am excess amount of dogs available in South Australia, with the RSPCA, AWL and the hundreds of smaller rescue organisations finding themselves full to the brim with perfectly adoptable dogs. The proposal of breeding more dogs in such an intensive manner is only going to contribute to the already massive issue at hand. Tens of thousands of dogs are euthanased each year in Australia as a result of over breeding, which is absolutely disgraceful and should not be allowed to happen. I firmly believe these proposed developments will only contribute to this ever growing problem. 4. The breeds that are commonly found in puppy factories are often the breeds with the highest care requirements and largest number of health problems. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, French Bulldogs, Pugs, Poodles, British Bulldogs etc etc are commonly found in puppy factories and often live a life a life of misery as a result of inadequate breeding research and veterinary care. 5. The puppies that are born in puppy factories can be prone to behavioural and medical issues later in life due to poor social interaction and vet care, and have a very good chance of ending up in a shelter as a result. However, the breeding dogs that are used and abused season after season are the ones that suffer most - kept in the same cage their whole life with nothing but misery and their puppies get taken away from them before they are forcibly impregnated again and again. This is no life,it is pure misery. And with the numbers being proposed in these development applications I am seriously concerned that the basic needs of the dogs will be completely neglected. Please consider my opposition to these developments seriously. I know puppy factories aren't illegal, but I also know they are not ethical. As an animal lover and owner I vehemently oppose these two developments and would prefer the council encourage ethical dog rescue and rehoming instead. Kind Regards,

01.01.2022 In 2003, the District Attorney’s Office in Tompkins County, NY, contacted me as the director of the county shelter. They received a complaint that under my dire...ction, the shelter was abandoning cats in violation of state anti-cruelty laws for offering free sterilization for feral cats and because our animal control officers engaged in Trap-Neuter-Release. At the time, the practice of TNR was rare in central New York, with all surrounding shelters choosing to kill feral cats, rather than release them back to their habitats. Before opening a formal criminal investigation, however, the D.A. requested information as to our practices. In a letter (which I still have), I not only explained our TNR program; as a former criminal prosecutor, I put TNR into legal context. I explained to him that nothing in the law prohibited our shelter from offering sterilization services to the public, that New York State health department regulations specifically exempted feral cats from rules governing owned cats, and that Section 377-a of the Agriculture & Markets law declared it to be the public policy of New York State that every feasible humane means of reducing the production of unwanted puppies and kittens be promoted. I explained that even when our own officers trapped cats for sterilization, we did so while contemplating their re-release after providing medical services to improve the quality and longevity of their lives, consistent with the law’s policy goals. I also informed him that we were supported in our efforts by the Tompkins County Health Department which contracted with us to provide these services (including rabies vaccinations). Finally, I assured him that we did not trap and release cats who were social with people. And while I support Return to Field programs (with caveats; see https://bit.ly/33bKwQ6 and http://bit.ly/2PDHXkR), I did not practice it. As an open-admission county-contracted No Kill shelter (the first in the nation), we found all cats who were social with people (even the grumpy ones) homes. He closed the file. Since then, all surrounding communities have implemented TNR programs. In fact, I addressed these same legal issues in 1994 when I wrote a prosector in the Outer Banks of North Carolina after the Humane Society of the United States similarly accused TNR advocates of abandonment. To HSUS at the time, feral cats should be taken to local pounds and killed and feral cat caretakers should be arrested and prosecuted. Thankfully, the prosecutor in that case also sided with me. After reading my brief, he likewise concluded that the North Carolina statute against abandoning pets is directed at those people who dump their pets and those individuals who move from an area and leave their pets behind. If an animal is returned to the area where it is being fed, it would be a greater injustice to find that these animals had been abandoned so that no action to spay/neuter the animals would be taken by anyone: https://bit.ly/2FnKjRK. None of this is controversial any more. At least it shouldn’t be. In fact, HSUS is now also a promoter of community cat programs. And yet this week (26 years later), I was contacted by cat advocates in upstate New York who received a complaint that their TNR work amounts to abandonment in violation of law. The difference now? We have 26 years of evidence that it is not only legal and practiced by caretakers, shelters, and even municipal government agencies nationwide, but that it works. Specifically, TNR: - Reduces intakes and killing of community cats; - Reduces complaint calls to animal control; - Reduces illness in the shelter; - Reduces spending (and waste of taxpayer money); and even, - Increases opportunities to expand lifesaving of other animals, such as dogs, too: nokilladvocacycenter.org/community-cat-program.html. It is also incredibly noble. While cats can survive in the absence of human assistance, it is as true today as it was at the moment in history when humans and cats were first inclined to live together thousands of years ago, cats will seek out humanity and the creature comforts we excel at creating; while humans, in obedience to those impulses which are best in them, will continue to open their hearts to care for them. ----------------------------------------- Learn more about me: http://bit.ly/2T1aaDT. 01.01.2022 "The story of improvement in pound outcomes so often isn't gradual, but the result of wonderful people like Libby, and her support network, shaking things up. Great to see also the council getting an honorable mention. Too often councils will think that no one will notice if they do a good or a bad job on impounding. But we do." ~ Justice4Max

01.01.2022 Our hope is for year one is to sell over 100,000 bottles; donating $50,000 to PetRescue.
