24.01.2022 GREENER SPACES, BETTER PLACES LIVING NETWORK UPDATE NOVEMBER FROM GREY TO GREEN: A BOLD PLAN TO RECLAIM SYDNEY'S BACK STREETS... We've seen quite a few projects over the last few months that looked at innovative ways to greenify underutilised vertical or rooftop space. But we love the simplicity of this idea: what if we looked for underutilised spaces at the ground level, too? This forms the basis of a concept put forward in Streets Ahead: A New State of Wellness, a place study conducted by ERA-co and commissioned by architecture firm Woods Bagot (the brains behind Sydney's Central Station redesign). The study analysed 11 inner-city Local Government Areas, and found that there's 800km of lesser-used roads such as back alleys, one way streets, and rarely used roadways which could be transformed into pedestrian networks, community spaces and market gardens. The analysis estimates that such a transformation would put over half a million Sydneysiders within 300 metres of a new green space. John Prentice, who is leading the Central Station refurbishment team, sums the idea up as "giving back the streets to the people". With COVID-19 reconfiguring the way we move about in, and use public spaces and roads combined with the increased public appetite for spending time in green space the Wood Bagot / ERA-co idea asks us, is now the time to reconfigure the way we think about alternate potentials of those spaces, too? What do you think about this "grey to green" idea? Have you seen any similar concepts brought to life in your area? We want to hear about it join the conversation on the Greener Spaces Better Places LinkedIn group, or drop us a note an [email protected]
23.01.2022 EXTENDING A HAND SST share this message below from Tina in the hope of saving Gardiner Park, Banksia in the Bayside Council area, from the loss of trees and construction of a Synthetic soccer field... The Environmental negatives of the loss of Canopy and the imposing of a surface that is a recognised Heat Sink in hot climates like Australia, along with the injury impacts that turn grazes into burns is an important issue for this Country. The initial construction is devastatin...g to the area and does require maintenance over time as weeds establish and cuts, tears and vandalism or accidents occur. Due Process is definitely needed as there is a great deal to be permanently lost. These are the councillors that are on the verge of agreeing but need a little push: The key councillors to contact are: [email protected] (0412 139 068), [email protected] (0403 222 666), [email protected] (0438 223 600), [email protected] (0412 898 256), [email protected] (0434 140 530), [email protected] (0416 200 034) 9597 141). 22.01.2022 HOLLOWS & HOMES With the upcoming passing of 2020, a year of multiple challenges, human homes be they affordable or just plain non existent, (due to our fires and COVID's economic impacts) we see that the Animal World just like us, suffering and in real need of help. Development is still taking our Significant and precious trees and while much is being spent($$$'s) and talked about in terms of Planting and Cooling, the results are STILL Inconsistent across Councils and indivi...dual States and Territories. New Coal and Fossil fuel enterprises and logging into Old Growth Forests advertised and before Parliament. We point out that this article is 2 years old and shows just 1 aspect of NEEDS and possible action. We feel this again highlights the real need for a Concerted National Approach and United, Consistent, Positive Outcomes across ALL Levels of Governance...so we can all have Consistent Positive Results
21.01.2022 WHAT A BEAUTY ! The Majesty Oak, also known as the Fredville Oak, is the largest maiden (i.e. non-pollarded) oak in Britain, if not Europe. It is located in Fredville Park, Kent, in Nonington, UK.... The age of the Majesty Oak is uncertain. Some have suggested it is 500 years old. It is difficult to date by size alone, since it (like certain other trees at Fredville Park) clearly grew in girth unusually fast. By appearance it looks about 500 years of age, but trees growing well will show fewer signs of aging. This is because trees grow by adding a new layer of wood to the outside, beneath the bark, each year and must do so to maintain life. This means that as the tree gets wider it has to synthesise more wood each year or else the new layer gets narrower and narrower until it can no longer encompass the entire girth. When this happens some branches become cut off from the roots and die, giving the tree a 'stag's head' appearance. Damage and drought can also kill branches, of course, and branches may be shed if they are too shaded or otherwise too expensive for the tree to maintain. A drawing of the Majesty Oak made in 1825 show some early signs of branch death, but the tree today maintains a healthy crown. However, a large hole is apparent on the north face and recently a hole has appeared in the south face. This latter hole was not apparent in photographs published in the 1990s. A few branches, including one major bough has been lost since the 90's too, such that the tree currently appears to be entering decline. Much of the centre is visibly hollow, though this is a normal part of the growth in this type of tree beyond a certain age. All these things considered, it is estimated that its age is about 700 years.

20.01.2022 HELP IS POSSIBLE...WITH TREES. Preserve, Protect and Plant !
20.01.2022 OCEAN FORESTS & HABITAT - IN DANGER !
20.01.2022 WHEN? WHY? HOW RANDWICK CITY COUNCIL? With NSW Greening Strategy; 2020 vision; Greater Sydney Commission and Science all directing what is NEEDED to be done in Principle, as we enter a time of Scientifically and Globally recognised Climate Change and a Federally and cross State and Local Government RESPONSIBILITY to the Paris Agreement, Randwick Council declared itself to be in a state of "Climate Emergency", which was welcomed by its Community. City of Randwick Council w...ith one of the lowest canopy covers in the Greater Sydney Area and one of the highest populations, today, enacted the felling of some of these established habitat and Public Amenity Trees for a car park opposite the Greek School in Anzac Parade, Maroubra. While this Council struggles to find places to Offset the Light Rail losses and try and reach publicised targets for 2030, one wonders how the CREATION of a Heat Island - "Open Hard Surface Area" for cars (when just a few short Kilometers down the road RETAINED Trees shelter cars from heat )? SST and the Community ask - 1. When was this decided? (As many in the local area had no idea); 2. Why was "Climate Emergency" and above mentioned requirement needs, not involved in this decision? 3. Was there an Environmental Report Conducted? 4. Was there Community Consultation? (Why are they asking questions as they come home to Carnage?) 5. WHERE are the Advertised OFFSETS going? Are they replacing target planting areas?? SO MANY QUESTIONS RCC ! We await a reply (Letter of Accountability and explanation "In Process" will be sent...We will update as responses come in).
18.01.2022 ACTION NEEDED SST join in support of this COMMUNITY that finds itself in a position where they must take their Council to the Land and Environment Court. At a time of Globally recognised need to Preserve, Maintain and increase Trees, Vegetation and Green Spaces plus Protect the Habitats of the Globe (including our own health and well being), the removal of established grounds and trees for Synthetic Turf simply does not pass the "Pub Test". The Economic case for such an actio...n is seen as completely disregarding the real $$COSTS that are passed on forever. A Heat Sink created and Environment destroyed. The Community voice here, has been over ridden along with many other elements of long term concern and detriment. THEY NEED HELP ! See more
18.01.2022 UPDATE ON Beverley Park Golf Club and Georges Rivers Council and the local Planning Panel who both Refused the Clubs DA for a new fence which would remove approx 20 trees. The Conciliation Conference with the Land & Environment Court has resulted in this decision which was sent to us by Elise Borg. We send her our THANKS for her vigilance and efforts. "Hello, the matter was adjourned and Council's solicitor advised us that the club would be submitting amended plans (which w...e believe will reduce the Number of trees to be removed to one) and a different designed fence (again). These plans would see the fence moved further inside the course and therefore would require the removal of less trees (so good news for the protection of the trees), but that they would also be submitting a new designed fence which would be black chain mesh with three strands of wire at the top (ie: barbed wire fence), which is still completely objected to by the residents. Thank you all for your support and interest on this matter". SST await the new round of plans and Submissions !
16.01.2022 GEORGES RIVER COUNCIL AT IT AGAIN SST has been alerted to yet more Infrastructure attacks on our CRITICAL ASSET TREES. TREES, our so needed Infrastructure, are once more being ignored. Australian Tree Standards should require elevation above the roots, IF a COUNCIL was paying attention to them or meeting CLIMATE & PARIS AGREEMENT Obligations or even the NSW Government Greening Sydney Initiative.... We have been alerted by the St George Tree group who supply this email address if you wish to voice an objection - [email protected] See more
15.01.2022 CRY FOR HELP SST has become aware of this appeal It is unfathomable that Australian people can allow OUR Shared culture and the land co shared to be mistreated.... We post this for HELP and KNOWLEDGE SHARED. WE look for your guidance on just how we deal with this? (i.e...The Heritage and the Responsibilities we all share.) Your thoughts please??
14.01.2022 AT LAST ! Tree Canopy TaskForce Australia and Saving Sydneys Trees CONGRATULATES. and is encouraged by the "Stand Off" presented against what is clearly another weakening of Environmental Protections. Inquiry and Scientifically presented facts have produced this reaction from the Public Representatives...... Questions we now are asking: * Will we see a disappointing "compromise" that still depletes? OR * Will we actually get the required strengthening being cried out for? PLEASE keep emailing your Representatives.
12.01.2022 JUST TOO CUTE ! SST Thank "KAILAS WILD" for posting this wonderful photo that he took, it puts a smile on our faces during these hard times !
08.01.2022 BEWARE WILDLIFE ABOUT We are seeing more and more of these sad pictures
08.01.2022 CHALLENGE FROM SIR DAVID ENJOY !
07.01.2022 A TRIBUTE SST just posted an image taken by Kailas Wild (the possum in the leaves).....We now find there is a whole lot more to this dedicated wildlife carer, photographer and Author. In appreciation we share his story -... After bushfires devastated Kangaroo Island's koala population, Kailas Wild went to help. His book "The 99th Koala" is the inspiring and sometimes confronting story of what happened next. An arborist by trade and conservationist at heart, when Kai heard that some of the injured koalas could only be reached by a tree climber, he drove 1500 kilometres to volunteer. Seven weeks later, he had participated in the rescue of over 100 koalas, become an international social media sensation and formed a special bond with a baby koala Joey Kai. In words and pictures, The 99th Koala shares Kai's experience and introduces us to some of the koalas of Kangaroo Island. Sometimes tragic, sometimes hopeful, above all Kai’s story commemorates our unique wildlife, and demonstrates the power of one person trying to make a difference. 'The 99th Koala is a plea for wildlife, it's a tribute to the volunteers who strive to save animals and rehabilitate them. It's an emotional roller coaster that shows the devastation and damage ... but it's a tale of love and dedication.' Good Reading - Kailas Wild
06.01.2022 THE UNDENIABLE TRUTH !
05.01.2022 SYDNEY'S LAST KOALAS
04.01.2022 DYSFUNCTION ! While it is now unavoidable in it's CRITICAL Importance to plant trees, results from the Greening Sydney Strategy iTREE information, point out that Bushes rather than TREES are being planted and that Trees are not being prioritised. The LONG TERM COOLING Canopy advantages of such trees seems to be missed as they continue to be taken by Housing DA's with what is becoming a constant battle between The Public and Planning. ... Randwick Council (who are mentioned in this article) with their Native Grasses and bush initiative, can be seen as one such area that is still decreasing it's actual significant tree Canopy but seems to be increasing its Bush and Grasses cover. At the same rate that it's Hard Surfaces are increasing...this has a negative net cooling impact. They are behaving similarly to many other Councils. Mr Stokes and Mr Kean - Projects like Mt Gilead and so many others NEED LEGISLATION that actually Protects the existing Public Assets in their Significant Trees. When will we see this? When will the real $$ Costs of their removal and tax payer initiatives to replace what Planning has removed, be seen as not in the Public Long Term Best Interests? LEGISLATION is needed that actually Preserves, Protects & MAINTAINS the existing Public Assets....
04.01.2022 FOR YOUR ENJOYMENT Without Protections of their canopy cover and Environment, wonders such as this will continue to disappear !
03.01.2022 REMINDER Submissions close This MONDAY 12th of July
02.01.2022 CORONAVIRUS...Has alerted the Social and Political Agenda, just how we relate to our Trees, Vegetation and Green Spaces and what we need for the Future. While this article is not specifically Australian, it definitely rings true here too. It speaks to the needs of Humans and Nature !
02.01.2022 LOVE LIFE ? Couldn't help but share this with you.
