23.01.2022 Quick Tip: Cat Play So when we are playing with our cats it helps to remember that they are ambush preditors. This means they hide, pounce in a big burst of energy and then reset a lot. Some hunting styles even rely on waiting for the the prey to get closer. Therefore cats benefit from multiple short rounds of play. When your cat starts to show reluctance to chase, reset the toy to a place they can hide and watch their energy return for a second wave! We often cut cat pla...y short because we don't really understand their hunting style and assume that like dogs if they want to keep playing, they will just keep coming back to us. Stalk, Leap, Play, Repeat How cute is @katspebbles?

19.01.2022 PUPPY GRADUATION TIME! What a bunch of awesome little hounds we had last month. They worked so hard with their families and I was so impressed. Lets wish them well in all their adventures! 17.01.2022 Ready... steady... GO! Mr Harlo is very concerned by other dogs and as a result his walks were often stressful for him as his threshold was constantly tested. When I first started walking with him, he wouldn't pee on walks, wouldn't take a treat and usually just trotted along side poking his nose ahead, ears pinned back, checking the path ahead. With a lot of successful, managed and dynamic walks Harlo now not only pees and trains on his walks but also plays little games like... Ready Steady... Go! I love watching him investigate his environment. We still have a way to go but he has come so far. I am using a #ezydogaustralia 5m lead to offer him choice while on our walk. If he wants to sniff or run he has a bit of space to let me know and the leash can stay loose just as I like it. This is a great too for dogs who show discomfort on a walk... or any dog for that matter! What do you do to keep your pooch happy on walks? I'd love to know!

15.01.2022 GRADUATION LOVE! Just look at these cuties all off into the big wide world a little more Savvy and with some awesome clued-up humans to support them. Hope you're having amazing adventures my little friends. Miss you all already xx

13.01.2022 Learning to Trust Dogs The gorgeous Pepper has a one-to-one home session focused on tolerance of other dogs on walks around her new home and neighbourhood. A stunning girl with so much love, but with a tendency to 'go for' other dogs if they get to close to her or the family home.... So many hounds struggle to tolerate the proximity of other dogs and usually with good reason. For Pepper, she didn't get the chance to learn as a puppy that other dogs are a source of positive socialisation and unfortunately as her adult self is guarded from the start, the experiences she has had have not been positive. We have introduced some long leash work for local sniff walks and positive methods to encourage Pepper to turn and increase distance from other dogs before her reactions escalate. By teaching her she has a better option than defensive threats and diffusing the tension on walks, we can open up a learning space for Pepper to realise that the proximity of other dogs is not threatening. Her family have taken the first steps and hopefully we have a chance to lower her stress and improve her enjoyment of her new home. Let's wish her luck and love

13.01.2022 CAUTION: DOG AT WORK There is something so satisfying about watching a pup really get stuck into their chew. We have talked about the benefits of chewing before but what I haven't mentioned is my stance on human involvement when dogs are eating. One word really warps our perspective of the human and dog relationship and that is OWNERSHIP. This one word has humans a little misguided in their expectations of what they should and shouldn't be able to do with their dog. You own a... dog only in legal terms within the eyes of other human. Your dog itself has no comprehension of your 'ownership' and does not consider you the be all and end all of its actions, emotions and decisions. Your dog does and should have autonomy! So when it comes to the assumption that a 'good dog' should let us take something out of its mouth without any concern or complaint, just ask yourself how your child would feel if you constantly removed things from them without explanation or guidance as to what they were going to do instead, just to prove you could? It would really break their trust in people and they would probably develop some concerning antisocial behaviours! So as someone who has retrieved many items from puppers large and small, I ask you to do the following. 1) If your dog has taken a chew or toy (gifted or stolen) to a resting spot away from others... GIVE THEM SPACE 2) If it is an appropriate chew or toy, let them chew uninterrupted for a while 3) If you need the item back, don't smash and grab it away from them. Instead call your dog towards you with the offering of another treat, chew or toy. I actually ask them to 'show me' in an excited tone. 4) Make the trade 5) If its their actual dinner, leave them to eat! It is not your right to create frustration in them by picking up and taking away the bowl just to 'teach them their place'. I have watched this human invasion create serious issues for families and other dogs in the home. And if you want to challenge me on this... be my guest... but first I dare you to come and take a piece of pizza out of my paws and see where it leads #dogtraining #puppytraining #anxiousdog #fearfuldog #hyperdog #newpuppyparent #dogsofqueensland #dogsofgoldcoast #goldcoastdogs #goldcoastpets #goldcoast #wearegoldcoast #goldcoastfamily #goldcoasthomes #gcpuppy #gcdog #gcbusiness #dogfriendlygc #supportlocalgc #dogchew

12.01.2022 Taking a moment to really appreciate everything that the last year has revealed. Quite honestly, the time and space needed for values to surface and ideas to take root was hugely appreciated but it came at an expense to our community that will never be overlooked. This year has seen the value of pet and human friendships raised beyond anything I have previously experienced. Pet parents are asking questions, paying attention and opening their hearts and minds to better communi...cation, better care and the most positive outcomes. You all know we animal folk owe a lot to our canine, feline and all sorts of other friends, but right now I would like to take a moment to thank some true human supporters who have changed the direction of my life and learning for good. To all the puppy parents who attended school with me, thank you for your attention and your joy. Savvy Pet School has created so many wonderful memories for 2020 since it started. Perhaps some reunions are due for 2021? To my veterinary colleagues who show kindness, trust and confidence in my guidance every week. You have truly inspired me to knuckle down and continually re-educate in order to support you all as best as I can in this roller-coaster industry. You set the bar high and I am grateful for the chance to join you up there. To my dear friends, my amazing partner and my fellow small business owners. Thank you for teaching me that I don't need to go it alone. That while a vision may be in the mind of one, the creation is in the hands of many. This is probably the greatest lesson I have learned the past year. Here's to thriving in 2021! 12.01.2022 SPLISH SPLASH! Time to get Savvy with your Bath! Here are 5 QUICK TIPS to help bath time go a little smoother and cost you less time, money and effort A jug is your best bathtime friend! By putting your shampoo into a jug and diluting it down by about 5 parts, you will get a more even wash with better coverage. Then you can use the jug to keep pouring the water over your dog instead of using a spray head that might be stressing them out. This also makes your shampoo go ...further as most brands are quite concentrated! Curly coats benefit greatly from conditioner! Just like humans, de-tangling in some of those sensitive areas can be a struggle. Friction points on fine coats can cause mats under the front legs, chest and neck (especially if using a harness) so using something like Aloveen from @dermcare that can be left on the coat can help! For short coated dogs, get a rubber brush and use it when you shampoo your dog. Massaging them with something like a @Kong Zoom Groom is soooo good for their skin. It helps the shampoo lather, stimulates their blood flow to the skin AND helps to de-shed. Winner especially for Staffys or bulldogs I have found! Set up for success with a lick mat, just like the ones from @lickimat. Lets face it, treats are great but they rely on you using your wet and slippery hands to keep feeding your dog, while holding your dog. Lickmats solve this issue with a mat you can spread a longer lasting, textured snack on to. Perfect bathtime treat! Finally towel time! I have found a great reward for bath time is the towel rolling afterward. Dogs love to squeegee the water from their coats but pushing along the floor. Let it happen! Give your pup a quick towel dry while they are still in the bath with the water draining. Then lay down a big beach towel and as soon as they are out let them shake and roll to their hearts delight. It's a fantastic stress reliever and such a fun reward. Take a look at my stories for some examples I have found showcasing these tips Let me know your bathtime tricks and tips! #dogtraining #dogbehaviour #dogwash #puppytraining #dogsofgoldcoast #gcpuppy #goldcoast

11.01.2022 Winston loves when the @ziwi_australia haul comes in. He knows its time for some really fun training. Yesterday we were playing 'the floor is lava', targeting from one chair or bench to another. I like to switch up my enrichment games with ground based activities and games for higher levels. After all our cats are built for tree climbing, branch balancing and wall walks so make sure they are getting that high-rise enrichment too!... Is your cat a ground dweller or a tree dweller? Have you thought about their favourite sleeping or look-out spots? The could give you some clues! #catsofqueensland #catsofgoldcoast #goldcoastcats #goldcoastpets #goldcoast #goldcoastfamily #goldcoasthomes #gccats #gckitten #catlife #catsforever #rescuecat #adoptdontshop #catsofinstagram #catlover #catbehaviour #catantics #catenrichment

08.01.2022 *Whatever the Weather* Now I wouldn't advise hitting the beaches on the GC in today's wind but that doesn't mean its time to hibernate just yet! Please remember to take a little time to walk or play with your pups outside in your street or garden even when its blustery or wet. Especially for puppies it is so important for them to habituate to different weathers and the sensations they bring. Put on your rain coat, grab a toy and spend ten minutes playing fetch in the garden a...nd letting them get their paws wet. Its a great way to build their confidence at this time of year! As the saying goes there is no such thing as bad weather... just the wrong clothing! 08.01.2022 YES YOU CAN!! Scroll to see our little friend Boss getting stuck in to one of his favourite garden spots! Digging is a bone of contention between owners and their doggos but there are a couple of things to consider before you try preventing them completely. Digging is as natural for dogs as foraging, playing or rolling. Trying to extinguish it completely is often a frustrating and unsuccessful endeavour. However just as we encourage peeing in places that suit our human home...s, you can redirect a behaviour to a preferred spot. For enrichment and also a little compromise, get your pupper a sand pit! @kmartaus have them for under $30 and they are easy to pop into the garden. To make this new spot a success, take a couple of chew toys that you don't mind burying and start making a game of "hide and dig". Make sure to leave one buried when you're done playing so they have a surprise later should they go to investigate. When you catch your dog starting to poke their nose in the soil or grass, interrupt them with a quick recall and encourage them to the sand. You will need to come out and spend time at the sandpit with your dog frequently, changing their toys and treats that are being hidden so that it stays a social and interesting little playground for them. If your pup is still going for the grass, don't use punishments or deterrents because these techniques are very VERY rarely successful and add to the frustration and stress your pup may be experiencing in the yard. Instead consider the following: Does your dog have a cool spot to lay down in? Often dogs will dig to find cooler soil. Might you have lawn grubs? A yummy snack to dig up! How long is your dog in the outdoor space alone? They may be feeling isolated and frustrated. These dogs will often dig at fence or wall lines. Is your puppy old enough to be outside alone without human guidance? Have you made your garden dog appropriate and are your expectations fair? Are you walking your dog in the afternoon only, meaning they have to stay within boundaries until later in the day? (BTW land size does NOT change this) Do you give your dog ample enrichment that use different skills?
