23.01.2022 It takes courage to stand out on social media. If you play it safe, follow the rules and believe that you’ll do well if you don’t rock the boat, the truth is, you’ll just blend in. And no one truly succeeds by blending in. ... Consider Celeste Barber. She’s super brave. She gets out there, in her undies most times, and dances like no ones watching. The result? 7.3 million Insta followers, a successful book, event hosting gigs, media deals, the list goes on. Now, we can’t all be like Celeste (I’m not gunna get out there in my undies. No siree. Kudos to you, Celeste). But I’ll tell you what we can be - ourselves. Being who we are is pretty brave in and of itself. But my message here is to also be who you are on social media. Don’t feel you have to be a certain way to be successful. That’s crap. So if you’re feeling like you’re putting up a post that’s not quite you, change it so it is. You do you. There’s no one else who can do that so well. And that’s the secret, trust me.
19.01.2022 LONG POST ALERT! Back in the day, competitions (also known as giveaways) were THE way to grow your audience on social media. It seemed so simple - just give something away for free and attract heaps of followers at the same time. ... Win-win. But times have changed. So here’s a quick rundown on social media competitions right now. Read on and then decide whether you still want to run them! (And I recommend saving this post so you can refer back to it later!). First, let’s cover Facebook. In a nutshell, running comps or giveaways on Facebook is fraught with danger. Not only is it a requirement to release Facebook from all liability (there are some specific words you need to use), it’s also against their competition rules to require people to tag others or follow your page to enter. Plus, if you use words in your caption such as comment below, these are considered spammy, so Facebook won’t splash the post around to your followers anyway. There are all sorts of legalities, which vary from state to state, relating to whether your competition is a game of chance or a game of skill. Depending on which one your competition is classified as, there could be extra requirements you need to adhere to as well. So on Facebook, it’s kinda not worth the effort anymore, because: You don’t get that many entries when using spammy language You risk violating their policies (which could get your page shut down), and You could end up unwittingly doing something illegal, depending on which state you live in. Then, there’s Instagram comps. Thankfully, the rules here are much looser! (Happy dance ) Like Facebook, the Insta Gods require you to release them of all responsibility for the comp. This must be done in the caption. You also cannot require entrants to tag themselves in a photo if they are not in the photo. You CAN: Ask people to tag friends in the comments Get people to share your post in their story Ask people to comment Have followers create posts and tag you in them, or use a certain hashtag. The same chance / skill rules apply, which vary from state to state, so make sure you check those before you post. So... I reckon comps can still work on Instagram, but I’m not a huge fan on Facebook, overall. There are clever ways you can work with the FB requirements, but that’s a whole other topic for another time! Now, save this post for future reference, and let me know whether you’re a fan of competitions or not. Has this post changed your thinking?
16.01.2022 Is it just me or is there a ‘sorting stuff out, clearing clutter and getting ready for next year’ kinda vibe happening right now? This year I’ve come to realise that my brain cannot deal with all the details! So I’ve ordered my 2021 planners, started a 5 month coaching programme and dusted off my wall calendar in the last few days. It feels good to be more organised. ... Are you feeling the same way?
14.01.2022 If I said there was a particular colour that performs best in photos on social media, would you believe me? It’s actually true. Who wants to guess what that colour is?... And then, just for fun, who wants to guess what the worst performing colour is? Who even knew colour performance was a thing???
13.01.2022 Today is my birthday! Yep, I’m now of an age where there’s not enough room on the cake for all the candles. It’s true. We tried. ... And in contrast to all the things I wished for in my youth, my ideal birthday today is where I get to flop in my pyjamas and go to bed early. Looking forward to that. Kids, it’s true what they say. All your childhood punishments become your goals when you’re old. So cheers to 43 years!
09.01.2022 Today was one of those days that lights me up. I got to download my brain in a strategy and coaching session in the morning, with a beautiful couple on the verge of great things. Then I met with a new client to help her sort through the very first steps of her new business, and we demystified and got rid of all the overwhelm. (And the lunch was super yum!)... Yep, these are the things that light me up. Helping people is why I’m here. I LOVE it. And I’m finding over time that what starts out as a social media chat becomes a much broader business conversation. And I’m fully open to that. Maybe there’s something brewing in Savvy Sally land.... What is it that lights you up in your business? Why do you do what you do?
04.01.2022 So, what do you think of Facebook Business Suite? (It’s the latest update to business pages, in case you haven’t seen it yet). I’m not a fan. The idea is it will make life easier, because you can post on Facebook and Instagram simultaneously. ... All good in theory. But, like lots of changes when they’re first rolled out, I don’t recommend it at this point for two main reasons: 1. You don’t have the ability to customise your post for each platform. This means you either need to include your 7 million hashtags (ok, slight exaggeration) on your Facebook post, which is not a good look AND mostly pointless, or you need to quickly jump onto Insta to add them as a comment the moment the post goes live. This defeats the whole purpose in my mind. And... 2. You can’t tag your location on your post. This means you’re missing out on one of the ways you get found on Instagram. So I’m going old school, and am sticking to Creator Studio for now. If it takes me extra time, so be it! What about you?
04.01.2022 Instagram in 2019 was all about: - hashtags - pretty photos - aesthetic feeds... - descriptive captions (or no captions at all for some people!) But Instagram now? - fewer hashtags - educational tiles - keywords - reels Oh yes, the game has definitely changed! In the latest episode of the Sideshow Sally podcast, I’m covering exactly what’s changed on Instagram and how - if you want to stay ahead of the game - you need to adapt. Don’t worry, it’s not as hard as you think! Tune in for 8 minutes of social media goodness (yep, I sum it all up for you in just 8 minutes!). Here’s the link to listen on my sexy website: https://www.savvysally.com.au/sideshow-s/instagram-changes/ Here’s the link to listen in your podcast app of choice: https://www.savvysally.com.au/sideshow-s/instagram-changes/ Let me know what you think!
03.01.2022 Time. It’s the only thing we cannot ever control. This time 8 years ago my first son was born. And things were forever changed. ... This time last week I was stressed and frantic trying to get all the things done so I could relax a little over school holidays. I still have some things I’m yet to tick off my list. And at this time now, I’m realising I have way too much on my plate, so it’s time to build a team. This is a new phase, it’s scary and I don’t even know where to start! Any tips? I’ll work it all out in time, I guess?!
03.01.2022 SAVE THIS POST! it’s a game changer! Ooohhhhh big changes are still happening on social media guys! No doubt you’ve noticed there have been lots of things going on, but to me the biggest changes are happening on Instagram.... Here is a quick summary of what you need to know: Hashtags are less important and are going to become even less so over time. Posts to your feed should not be your priority - you need to get into more reels and stories It will no longer work to have super short and snappy captions. Use keywords like you would for Google Aim for shares and saves. Forget likes! Use more carousels (multiple photos or tiles) There are super cool new things you can do such as Guides. Guides are fantastic for many businesses - shops in particular - but this is a whole subject on its own! Instagram is becoming super crowded with millions of businesses and multiple content streams, so if you rely on this platform, it’s time to COMPLETELY overhaul how you’ve been doing things. Need help? Book in a strategy session with me. It’ll be fun, I promise!
03.01.2022 Top social media moments of 2020 From Covid memes to Zoom fails, political movements to viral videos - these are the most memorable moments on social media this year. I was limited to 10 tiles, it was too long for a Reel, so this is my shortened shortlist! ... What else would you add? Check out my story for the TikTok video that spawned a Fleetwood Mac resurgence, a free car and a lifetime supply of juice! #socialmedia
01.01.2022 If you run Facebook ads, you need to read this. Sooo, Apple and Facebook are sort of having a tiff . And it’s about you and me, and what we do while online. See, the new Apple iOS 14 update asks people if they want their digital activities to be tracked. ... And most people when posed with this question will no doubt say no. No dramas, right? But hang on a sec. This is significant because when people say no to being tracked, it means they can’t be retargeted on social media ads. This is a good thing though, isn’t it? Well, not if you run ads. Turning off tracking means the retargeting options for ads will become far less effective as more people opt out. This means your ads won’t be as accurate, which will push the price of reaching people who are interested in your business way up. So from a business slash social media perspective, this is pretty bad. But from a personal perspective, it’s good and bad, depending on your view. Good because it’s a step up for privacy, and bad because you will no longer see ads about things of interest to you. So if you’re a girl who loves tutus, you’ll probably see ads about blokes shorts. And you’ll find it much, much harder to find that perfect pink tutu. Hello endless Googling! I think this seemingly positive update is a game changer. It could mean even less visibility on social media...even if you pay. So my lovely ladies, what’s your take? Will you opt out of tracking knowing all this? Tell me what you think!
01.01.2022 If I was to, oh I don’t know, create a course or something, what would you like it to cover? There are sooooo many courses out there, but I feel like they’re all kinda the same. Maybe I’m too close to it, maybe I’ve done way too many, maybe I’ve stalked too many other people’s courses...anyway, let’s not go there. Either way, I don’t like to do what everyone else is doing. In case you haven’t noticed lol. ... I also realise there’s more to life than social media (ssshhhh, don’t tell the others ). And personally, I don’t know if doing 50 different courses is a good thing, or if it’s better to have it all in one. So, If you could enrol in your PERFECT course, what would it look like? Seriously, the sky is the limit here, guys. Digital? Face to face? Videos? Summits? Mindset? Copywriting? Graphic design? Branding? Strategy?Marketing? Sales psychology? I’ve got all this in my head (and am open to calling in others who jam on it too). I just want to create something you will LOVE and get a tonne of value from. If I was to create a course, that is... So brain dump on me!
