14.01.2022 PHONE SCAM ALERT! Listen out for suspicious calls claiming to be from the ATO. Scammers are ‘spoofing’ our phone numbers so it looks like we’re calling. The...y’re also leaving our numbers on voicemails to make their contact seem real. While these calls may appear to be from us, remember that we’ll never: threaten you with arrest demand immediate payment, particularly through unusual means such as bitcoin, prepaid credit cards or gift cards advise against speaking with a trusted advisor or your tax agent project a number on caller ID. 08.01.2022 Last year around 6 million people claimed work-related clothing and laundry expenses totalling nearly $1.8 billion. Many taxpayers have legitimate claims for ...uniforms, occupation-specific or protective clothing, but some are unfounded or unreasonable... Case one: A car detailer claimed more than $20,000 in laundry expenses on his tax return. When questioned, the taxpayer told us he calculated the claim at a rate of $227 per hour, because he valued his personal time... He then made a voluntary disclosure admitting the claim was excessively high, and we reduced the claim as a result. The expenses must be directly related to earning your income. You must have a record to prove it. Check the deductions you can claim at ato.gov.au/deductions
