22.01.2022 Trollope Shield Round 2 NORTH RINGWOOD 7/168 v MONTROSE 7/169 Montrose won by 3 wkts... North Ringwood won the toss and elected to bat hoping for a repeat performance of last weeks win with Simon Gray looking to build on his personal performance from last week also. It was in fact Montrose’s captain coach in Matt Whitaker who had other ideas after taking the wicket of Gray following a steady start. With the score on 1/56 The Bulls had built a nice platform to kick on with Aaron Leis especially looking in good touch. The Montrose bowlers stayed patient and found a way to pick up wickets just as partnerships were forming. With Justin Perkins and Cheyne Van Koll bowling well through the middle overs , and a series of 3 run-outs along with the vital wicket of Aaron Leis (55) North Ringwood just kept getting pegged back , and had it not been for 12 wides the final total of 7/168 could have been less. In reply Montrose’s innings got off to a stuttering start and with North Ringwood’s opening bowler Mitch Skinner (4/24) picking up the first 4 wickets he had helped his side have the opposition reeling at 4/40. Then a nice partnership of 57 between Kieran Perkins and Cooper Grigg (22) had put Montrose back on track and at 4/97 were seemingly in a decent position at chasing down the target. A couple more wickets did fall and it was down to Kieran Perkins who produced an outstanding innings of 83 not out off 93 balls to steer his side home by 3 wickets with 2 overs to spare. SOUTH CROYDON 9/130 v AINSLIE PARK 9/132 Ainslie Park won by 1 wkt As in the previous game both these sides won last week in Round 1 and again the home side South Croydon won the toss and selected to bat. The innings couldn’t have started any worse for South Croydon with Mark Arnott picking up a wicket with the very first ball in claiming the scalp of the dangerous Sameet Brar. With a father son opening bowling partnership they had fallen into a nice groove with Baily Arnott picked up a wicket shortly after. Things got even better for Ainslie Park with Mark Arnott, then claiming the prize scalp of current Bill Dean medalist Ryan Smith. Surely there is no better component of the new ball which saw Mark Arnott bowl out his overs in one spell finishing with amazing figures of 3/7 off 8 overs including 6 maidens. Needless to say, that this went a long way, along with Darren Walles (2/15 off 8), in restricting South Croydon to 9/130 at the close of innings. In chasing, I’m sure Ainslie Park would look at getting off to a big start with Jake Tucker opening up who can score so quickly and with a low total to chase basically take the game away from any opposition. But as in the first innings, runs seemed hard to come by with the bowlers being on top throughout. Mitch Crozier (3/19) started and finished well along with Tyson Lacey (3/19) continuing on from last week’s form operating through the middle. Wickets falling steadily and at 8/117 the game was still in the balance. Surely the script was written for father/son Arnott to finish off the game but when Mark Arnott fell with 3 runs still needed and only 1 wicket in hand it was left to young Bailey to calmly hit the winning runs. This low run chase which sometimes are unpredictably harder would not have been possible without a steady and important innings by Josh Bettess (27 n.o) who top scored to help his side stagger over line in a hard thought win. LILYDALE 9/154 v WANTIRNA SOUTH 167 a.o Wantirna South won by 13 runs Wantirna South won the toss and had no hesitation in having a bat. Looking to redeem a narrow loss last week and after losing an early wicket it was Cam Smith (32) and Troy McGown (32) putting on a 2nd wicket partnership of 66 to have the visitors sitting pretty and looking to post a score of around 200. Then wickets started to fall at regular intervals whilst captain Michael McDonald (30) tried to keep the innings going. The wickets were shared about with Shifran Muthalif being the pick with impressive figures of 2/19 off 8 . After being 8/136 the innings progressed to 167 all out which seemed under par at first glance. In reply, Lilydale got off to a slow but steady start with Tristian Webb and Drew McKay bowling miserly opening spells This seemed to spark off Daniel Thompson (44) who accelerated and at 1/72 were seemingly in a good position. But again, like throughout all the games the bowlers got on top with David Ryan spinning his way to an impressive 3/24 from 8 and two crucial direct hit run-outs by Andrew Jones. 6/103 then became 6/151 with Lilydale’s captain Mitch Ebayer being a key player here and as in the Grand Final in 2018 he could easily steer his side to a victory. Then came the final over and although Ebayer (42) hitting a six off the first ball it was the experienced Drew McKay (3/24) that came up with the goods claiming 3 wickets in 5 balls to see his side win by 13 runs MOOROOLBARK 3/128 v TEMPLETON 127 a.o Mooroolbark won by 7 wkts If the other three Trollope games were close fought affairs , this one was far from that with the final game seeing another two sides that lost last week come up against each other. Templeton won the toss and elected to bat. Yet again runs were very hard to come by and after a good start by Rohan Williamson (2/27) it was Wayne Ross who did the real damage picking up super figures of 5/20 off 8 overs. Templeton were eventually bundled out for 127 Obviously early wickets were the key, but Templeton were never really in the hunt and this game turned out to be one sided with Mooroolbark cruising to victory for the loss of just 3 wickets. James Markland led the way with an unbeaten 41, ably supported by Scott Dimitriou (28 n.o) (my cricket to be updated with full scorecard) Current Ladder 1 Ainslie Park 12 2 Montrose 12 3 South Croydon 6 4 North Ringwood 6 5 Mooroolbark 6 6 Wantirna South 6 7 Lilydale 0 8 Templeton 0 Next weeks fixtures: Montrose v South Croydon Ainslie Park v North Ringwood Wantirna South v Mooroolbark Templeton v Lilydale
