21.01.2022 DAY 3 OF TRUSTED RESOURCES SPOTLIGHT: DEAR WORLD, I STUTTER: A Series Of Open Letters From A Person who Stutters James Hayden... For most of his life, James has stuttered. As a means of processing his story and accepting his stutter, James decided to write a series of open letters to those who have been or will be on his journey with stuttering. These letters provided an honest and vulnerable look into the heart and mind of a person that stutters. James Hayden was born, raised, and currently lives in the New Orleans area. James is a New Orleans Saints fan, Survivor superfan, writer, and a person who stutters. James is the author of Dear World, I Stutter: A Series of Open Letters from a Person Who Stutters. His work has been published by The Mighty, The Stuttering Foundation, Yahoo, and MSN. James has also appeared on several podcasts and was a speaker at TEDxOchsner 2019 (https://www.stutteringhelp.org/blog/tedx-experience). James also serves as the chapter leader for the New Orleans chapter for the National Stuttering Association. 20.01.2022 DAY 2 OF TRUSTED RESOURCES SPOTLIGHT: VOICE UNEARTHED: Hope, Help and a Wake-Up Call for the Parents of Children Who Stutter Dori Holte... The primary message young children get in stuttering therapy is that they can and should manage their speech - in other words, try to not stutter - by utilizing speech tools and techniques. Doreen Lenz Holte explores the possibilty that the anxiety this causes may create an even greater burden? And if so, can that burden lead to excessive silence and disengagement - a far greater handicap than the stuttering itself? Through personal narrative and extensive research, Voice Unearthed attempts to answer these questions. Practical guidance that aims to help keep children talking while minimizing everyone’s anxiety around communicating is shared with a reminder to first do no harm." Doreen (Dori) Lenz Holte wrote Voice Unearthed: Hope, Help, and a Wake-Up Call for the Parents of Children Who Stutter as the book she wishes she could have read when their family was starting out on this journey with their three-year-old son, Eli, in 1999. Since the book was published in 2011, and especially after beginning the Facebook group Voice Unearthed - Supporting Children Who Stutter in 2014, Dori has become an international advocate for parents and speech therapists looking for safer ways to treat children. Her focus is on keeping them talking and engaged in the world around them not fixing their speech. Dori shares her experiences and research with groups of speech language therapists and students of communication disorders, both in person and via Skype. Visit Dori's website at http://voiceunearthed.com And you can buy the book at https://www.amazon.com/Voice-Unearthed-Wake-Up-Parents-C// #voiceunearthed #stutteringawareness #doriholte #everyvoicematters

20.01.2022 DAY 4 OF TRUSTED RESOURCES SPOTLIGHT: STAMMERING PRIDE AND PREJUDICE: Difference not Defect Patrick Campbell, Christopher Constantino, & Sam Simpson... "The essays, accounts, research, prose, testimonies, art and poetry in this multidisciplinary anthology will nourish and inform readers who stammer, and readers who don’t, for many years to come. Whether a stammer is a pathology, a quirk to be celebrated, a curse or a blessing, or all these things, Stammering Pride and Prejudice is a gift." David Mitchell, Award-winning author and person who stammers, provide the book's foreword. Stammering is typically stigmatised as a character flaw and personal tragedy. We challenge the stereotype that stammering is inherently negative. Instead, we position stammering as a different, valuable and respected way of speaking. Stammering Pride and Prejudice brings together new, empowering voices and opinions on stammering into one accessible text. Combining personal narrative, art and disability theory, we document how society has historically disabled people who stammer and the diverse ways in which people have created novel and exciting understandings of their speech. 'Stammering Pride and Prejudice: Difference not Defect': - is the first published book exploring stammering from a social model perspective written for people who stammer and the general public, as well as professionals - represents diverse perspectives on stammering and highlights the attitudinal, environmental and structural barriers in society experienced by people who stammer - chronicles newly-developed and undocumented narratives around stammering - suggests ways of celebrating and taking pride in stammering so that it is no longer seen as the negative opposite of fluency. Editors Patrick Campbell, Christopher Constantino and Sam Simpson say, "Stammering is typically stigmatised as a character flaw. We challenge the stereotype that stammering is inherently negative, instead positioning it as a different, valuable and respected way of speaking." Learn about the origins of the book by visiting https://stamma.org/y/origins-stammering-pride-and-prejudice You can buy the book at https://www.amazon.com.au/Stammering-Pride-Prejudice-Dif// #stammeringprideandprejudice #changingthenarrative #stutteringawareness #everyvoicematters

18.01.2022 A huge THANK YOU to the Genetics of Stuttering Study team for sharing our President Richs story and for the wonderful and important research they are doing

18.01.2022 For any Australians and Americans interested in helping our Research Friends at the Spartan Stuttering Laboratory at Michigan State University understand more about stuttering...... Research suggests that people from different societies and cultures hold different views about stuttering, but we do not know how these differing opinions might affect the self-perceptions of people who stutter. Researchers from the Spartan Stuttering Laboratory at Michigan State University are se...eking to answer this question by studying differences in both societal and individual opinions about stuttering and people who stutter. Participants will complete an Internet-based survey on Qualtrics that requires about 20 minutes of time. The survey includes two common measures of peoples experiences of stuttering: The Self-Stigma of Stuttering Scale (4S; Boyle, 2013) and the Overall Assessment of the Speakers Experience of Stuttering (OASES). In a separate part of this study, the Research Team will also be collecting data from people who do not stutter about societal views about stuttering using the Public Opinions Survey about Human Attitudes (POSHA; St. Louis et al., 2009). The Research Team is Angelica Wozniak, BS Graduate Student, Michigan State University, and J Scott Yaruss, PhD Professor, Michigan State University. Please email Prof. J. Scott Yaruss at [email protected] if you have any questions. To learn more about the study and to participate if you choose to do so, please follow this link: https://msu.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0qERuoyhIXHihql You can also learn more about their research at this link: https://stutteringlab.msu.edu. The Research Team have several ongoing survey studies about peoples experiences and perceptions regarding their own stuttering, and would be grateful for your participation. Thank you for wanting to help the world learn more about stuttering.

13.01.2022 SAY: The Stuttering Association for the Young is more than just an organisation......it's a family and a truly accepting and loving 'home' for so many young people who stutter, their families, and adults like myself who stutter. As a member of the SAY family since 2015, and now President of SAY: Australia, I've witnessed first hand the support, advocacy, and life-changing experiences that SAY provides for young people who stutter, ages 3-18, through their comprehensive and in...novative programs that address the physical, social, and emotional impacts of stuttering. Through summer camp, regional day camps, speech therapy, and creative arts programming, SAY builds a community of acceptance, friendship, and encouragement where young people who stutter can develop the confidence and communication skills they need to thrive......and to know that their voice matters! In these trying times, we are seeing widespread suspension of many vital services. Young people who stutter are at genuine risk of suffering the same fate. More than ever, SAY is wholeheartedly dedicated to our mission and determined to keep this essential community HERE and available for EVERY child who stutters. On Friday 15th May 2020 at 6pm EST-US (Friday 15th May 2020 at 11pm UK TIME; Saturday 16th May 2020 8am Australian Eastern Standard Time) SAY is holding it's first ever LIVE Virtual Benefit. 13.01.2022 Looking forward to "Conversation" with Richard Stephens. Richard Stephens's fusion Mancunian accent hints at the sophistication of his person. (If you're won...dering what is "Mancunian"? It's the dialect spoken by people by Manchester City, England, otherwise known as "Mac" for short.) In his formative years, he grew up in England as a boy with a stutter. He went on to earn his first degree and 6-year career as a psychiatric nurse, serving the needs of people with mental health concerns in England, Ireland and New Zealand. He attributes his experiences working with the Maori (indigenous Polynesian people of mainland New Zealand) as a transformative part of his personal journey coming to peace with his stutter. In 2017, he returned to "Uni" in Manchester, earning BSc degree in Speech and Language Therapy. During this period, Rich first volunteered as a bunk counselor at Camp Say, The Stuttering Association for the Young and has been involved ever since. Rich continued his studies at the The University of Manchester, earning his MSc in Neuroimaging for Clinical & Cognitive Neuroscience. At that time, he skipped across the (Atlantic) pond, to pursue PhD studies at Vanderbilt University and Michigan State University when... opportunity struck. The opportunity to bring a new approach of support and self-expression for young people who stutter in Australia. It was an opportunity too good to pass, so Rich took it, and launched @say aSAY: The Stuttering Association for the Young - Australia in 2019. Today, Rich brings his whole self to his life and his work. In doing so, he pays forward the lessons and experiences he gathered as a kid who stutters growing up in England; as a psychiatric nurse working with the indigenous people of New Zealand; as a professional speech-language therapist and neuro-imaging neuroscientist; and as a father to his 16 month old son... He is opening doors for young people who stutter, doors that weren't there for him and too many other young people who stutter. (Oh yeah, in his private time, he follows sports - as diverse as his rich live experiences - including his boyhood club Manchester United Football Club, the Seattle Seahawks (NFL) and Toronto Blue Jays (MLB); and if you're interested, he has the ULTIMATE Star Wars Film watching-sequence guide for any newcomers to the franchise!) This will be a GREAT conversation. Join us. Let's talk.

08.01.2022 Our inspirational founder......truly deserved

07.01.2022 To our wonderfully amazing SAY: Australia community, These are very difficult and unprecedented times for us all. With recommendations from the World Health Organisation and Governments across the world to comply with strict social distancing measures to minimise the spread and impact of the COVID-19 virus, it is with a heavy heart that we have taken the difficult yet necessary decision to postpone all SAY: Australia in-person activities indefinitely. Our SAY: Australia commu...nitys safety, and that of the broader community, is paramount right now. Therefore, to protect the health and safety of us all, this decision was made. Our staff will be working from home and we will be guided by the governments recommendations of when to return to our Melbourne City base. SAY: Australia will continue to connect, support, and send our love to our community during these difficult times! Our young peoples voices matter always, and we will continue to provide them with a platform to have their voices heard! Rest assured, SAY: Australia is here for you always! Our final ART EXHIBTION PROJECT session and GALLERY SHOWCASE, and our premiere screening of WHEN I STUTTER, will reconvene at a later date, and we will continue to prepare and plan for our PLAYWRITING PROJECT to commence on 9th May 2020. Enrolment remains open for all of our programs, and we will provide updates about our rescheduled programming/events via our social media threads. From everyone here at SAY: Australia and the wider SAY community, stay safe and healthy. Much love, Rich Stephens President, SAY: Australia.
