25.01.2022 New Midas console preview.

24.01.2022 My personal take on the new Midas HD-96. To me, this is truly the first Midas Digital console. All those who know me are aware how much of an advocate of Mida...s Pro Series that I am, but to me it was never a true digital console. It was designed on XL8 as a networked audio system to allow Midas to evolve the sonic signature of the XL4 into a desk with digital control. Midas was an analog audio console company at that time, not a computer company. To me, that meant that they were coming at it from a different direction than all other manufacturers who designed and built their consoles as a ground up digital mixing console. Pro series was just an extension of the XL8 platform, and was unfortunately handcuffed to that design to keep console consistency between the desks. For some, the workflow of that design was easy to adapt to, I was one of those people. For others, the design was foreign to the workflow of most other systems, and those people either had a hard time wrapping their heads around the Midas workflow, or just plain disliked it. For all those who have operated the Pro Series consoles, I feel not one of them will dispute the fact that the desks sound amazing, but sound alone does not dictate the quality that a show will be mixed by an engineer. If an engineer is not comfortable on a console, or its workflow, that will affect the integrity of the show. That engineer has the potential of supplying a better show mixing on a different platform, even if the sonic signature is not of the same caliber. HD is entirely new. It is not Pro Series. HD was not designed as a new updated Pro Series, it was designed as a desk that along with supplying the proven Midas signature sound, could supply a workflow and feature set that not only existing Midas users would love, but one that ALL engineers that currently mix on many different platforms could easily adapt to and find comfort in operating. That couldnt come from an update to Pro Series, hence, something entirely new....and actually, to me, Midass first ground up design of a true digital mixing console. Peter Sadler, Chris Hinds, and the HD team knocked it out of the park with this console. In the days of analog, Midas was in a league of its own. They came in late to the world of digital due to focus on the sound of the desk, not the expandability and aspects of a digital future. In 2006, who would have expected us to be where we are now? Here in 2019, most audio console manufacturers who offer high end products are working on platforms that are several years old at this point. What many others offered when they were released, trumped Midas Pro Series in terms of digital features. Most other lines are still utilizing features that were ground breaking when they were released, but now those consoles are in a way, handcuffed to those platforms. Waves LV1, when it launched, although not hardware based, offered the mixing community many new benefits that a current computer / multi-touch screen system could bring to mixing. HD is even newer than that. Its something that can supply those features also, but given that is is based around current 2019 computer systems, be prepared for things you never would have expected to see possible in a current mixing system. That being said, when HD comes to market, my words of advise to those planning on purchasing it. Pay attention to who your vendor / dealer of choice will be when you purchase it. This console will be extremely powerful, and something that having an educated and available line of support for will be key. As with any manufacturer with complicated products, support is key. Midas already has Pro Series. Even when that line hits end of life, the 10 year Music Group warranties will keep that desk relevant from 7-10 years. They sound great and will not disappear in that time, and they will still require support. Add HD to the equation. Expect the support lines to be extended further. Choosing the correct vendor is key to all involved. As an owner of the desk, having an avenue for support that can cover you not only will give you better support, but will help lessen the load on CARE from receiving calls that can and should be answered elsewhere, leaving CARE to concentrate on issues only they can address as the hardware manufacturer. If you are currently an RPM Dynamics customer, or if you have ever spoken to any of our customers, you know that the support from RPM regarding Midas is second to none. With a desk as powerful as HD, having that support in your back pocket now, even more than that with Pro Series, has a value that really needs to be thought about before you pull the trigger on buying one or leasing HD as your tour control. Keep that in mind, and keep RPM in mind when your time for HD comes. Yes, obviously we would love to be your vendor, but with HD, the benefit that comes to you from it is going to be larger for the customer than for RPM!
