24.01.2022 We have some terrific artists lined up at World Wetlands Day. From 11am until 3pm, artists will be sharing their expertise and helping you create some beautiful... wetlands inspired art to take home. Create an invertebrate puppet with freelance designer / maker Roz Wren in our Crazy Critter Corner, and while you’re there, make some more crazy invertebrates from waste with Maree Bakker. Feel like an introspective quiet activity? Come and draw some saltmarsh plants and water bugs. Or screen print an original design onto a free calico tote bag with visual artist Warren Mason. For those who would prefer their art to be created by someone else, join the queue for Leesa from Mona Leesa, who will be painting beautiful wetland inspired designs. See more
22.01.2022 To celebrate World Wetlands Day 2020, we have not one but two Discovery Rangers from Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service coming in to run activities! Kristin Mc...Cutcheon, an environmental educator, will be running a fun, hands on activity called Flushed Away to explore what gets washed away into our local waterways and wetlands when it rains. William Oliver, an animal scientist and orange-bellied parrot enthusiast, will be getting a little messy with some hands on nature painting. Visit the Discovery Ranger’s display table and discover how our changing environment is putting greater pressures on our local waterways and oceans. The time to act is now! See more
20.01.2022 Warren Mason, a proud indigenous man with lines to the Yorta Yorta and Yuwaalaraay tribes, is a designer, artist and musician. He has created this beautiful design just for tomorrow's celebration of World Wetlands Day. Come and print it on to a free calico bag or bring something of your own. Lookin' good!
19.01.2022 This year we celebrate 20 years of caring for Jacks Flat, a rather special reserve in Dodges Ferry. This land has been regularly tended by the Southern Beaches Coastcare Landcare group and volunteers, with regular working bees and celebrations held throughout the year. What began as a virtual paddock of grass and weeds has transformed into an essential native habitat corridor for wildlife and also an important green space for locals to enjoy. Recently the local bush school homeschooling group have been having a fabulous time at Jacks Flat. "Such a wonderful private, cosy nook you have created. The kids ran amongst the trees and built cubbies. We lit a fire in the fireplace, boiled the billy and roasted potatoes for lunch!" More about Jacks Flat to come!
16.01.2022 20 years ago the Sydney Olympics were in full swing. 20 years ago today we were thrilled when Cathy Freeman won Gold for Australia. And 20 years ago this week Southern Beaches Landcare/Coastcare volunteers began an Olympic Landcare Project to revegetate and restore habitat on a degraded piece of Council land and the adjacent Crown Land reserve on China Creek. ... Jacks Flat Reserve has been transformed. The stile, built with assistance from Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA), is now nestled among shady trees and the reserve is graced with diverse native flora and fauna that have made it their home. Take a walk on the wildside! Visit Jacks Flat and treat yourself to some birdwatching and orchid spotting. Perhaps you can find and identify the tracks and scats which reveal which animals have moved in at Jacks Flat. Find Jacks Flat on Old Forcett Road opposite Heatherbelle Road and follow the hardened track down to the rock circle. Please respect the wildlife living in this precious place by leaving your dog at home.
