With an ATAR score of 99.30, placing him in the top 0.7% of almost 50,000 Queensland students, we congratulate 2020 College Dux, Kevin Keller on his outstanding achievement. Such was Kevin’s results, that he also received a Certificate of Academic Commendation from the Education Minister for attaining an ‘A’ in at least six General subjects. This certificate was distributed to only 983 of the previously mentioned 50,000 stude...nts. Kevin was not alone in his achievements and a further 8.5% of the boys received an ATAR of 95.00 or better. 17% were above an ATAR of 90.00 and 33% were ranked in the top 20% of the state with an ATAR above 80.00. Many of these boys have now received their first preferences at university and will study a range of courses from Engineering to Medicine. In the area of vocational pathway’s, the College had Eighty-five boys, or 77% of the cohort exit the College with a Nationally recognised certificate. In total, 147 vocational certificates were distributed to the class of 2020. This distribution included sixty-three at the Certificate III level and sixty-eight as a Certificate II qualification. From an educational perspective the 2020 data shows that we have achieved exceptional results across a wide variety of fields. Our mandate is to ensure that, regardless of your son’s career ambitions we can provide the depth and breadth of learning opportunities to get him there. We believe that this mandate will be enhanced in 2021 with the construction of the STEM Centre and the inclusion of more General and vocational subjects into the senior school, which will include: Certificate III in Aviation remote pilot Certificate II in Electrotechnology Design Psychology The College would like to commend the 2020 cohort for their exceptional academic achievements and wish them the best of luck in their future endeavours.

14.01.2022 INTERNET ADDICTION SCHOOL TV In today’s digital environment, the internet can be viewed as a valuable tool for education, research and entertainment. Therefore, it is vitally important to a child’s wellbeing for parents to regulate a child’s internet use. Internet addiction can... cause significant psychological and social problems for children in years to come. The true effects on future generations is not yet known, but there are strategies that parents can implement now. In the following edition of School TV, Dr Michael Carr-Gregg discusses what causes internet addiction, who is most at risk and what parents can do to regulate the amount of time their kids spend online each day. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this edition of SchoolTV. If you have any concerns about your Son, please contact the school counsellor for further information or seek medical or professional help. 10.01.2022 SCHOOLTV SPECIAL REPORT: Having the Alcohol Discussion With the impending festive season and end of school celebrations, some teenagers may be feeling ready to party, wanting to put the disruptions, frustrations and disappointments of this past year, behind them. To ensure our young people stay safe during this time, parents and carers are encouraged to have the alcohol discussion - no matter how difficult or overwhelming it may be. It is important to outline the rules and bo...undaries around age-appropriate alcohol consumption and what the legal implications may be. Young people are at greater risk of alcohol-related harm than adults because their brains continue to develop until their mid-twenties. The safest level of alcohol consumption for teenagers, is no alcohol at all, but this may be difficult to enforce and may not prevent them from experimenting. However, parents and carers can influence sensible drinking habits and help minimise the risks. In this Schooltv Special Report, a series of discussion points are offered to help make the conversation about alcohol consumption a little easier. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this Special Report, and as always, we welcome your feedback. If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the College for further information or seek medical or professional help. 09.01.2022 HARRY’S NIGHT TO REMEMBER AS SBC OLD BOYS SHINE 2015 graduate Harry Grant lit up Suncorp Stadium last night as he realized a boyhood dream by representing his state in rugby leagues most competitive arena. Harry who hails from Yeppoon played a starring role for Queensland in last nights series clinching State Of Origin match against old rivals the NSW Blues. In what could only be described as a 10/10 performance, Harry scored a try and made several line breaks to help put th...e nail in the Blues coffin. An old boy of the college, Harry can be seen every off season gracing the main field at SBC, running, passing and kicking balls in an effort to improve his game. Harry is a local through and through and credits part of his success to being a St Brendan’s College student. Having played his trade under the watchful eye of former First XIII coach Terry Hansen, his game went to new levels and ultimately provided the springboard he needed to succeed. We are all looking forward to seeing more of Harry in both the NRL and State Of Origin series in future. The college community are very proud of what he has achieved in the game to date. The college also recognises the effort of another old boy, Ben Hunt who contributed to the success of the Maroons in the latest series.

08.01.2022 CYBERBULLYING HOW CAN YOU HELP YOUR SON. With the advent of the internet, smart phones and tablets, there is now a whole new digital dimension added to traditional schoolyard bullying. There was once a time when bullying victims were given some respite outside of school hours, but sadly these days, online bullying can occur 24/7. In today’s world, teaching your child about online and cyber safety, is as important as learning to swim or cross the road!... Cyberbullying can be identified as being the repeated behaviour by an aggressor with the intent to harm or embarrass. Technology enables these aggressors to share information widely and quickly, making this form of bullying extremely dangerous and harmful. However, the answer is not to shun the internet nor social media. Instead, parents are encouraged to embrace it and instil a family internet policy to protect their children without limiting the freedom to learn, explore and communicate online. Children have the right to feel safe, regardless of whether it is in the schoolyard or online. SchoolTV provides parents with useful guidelines and advice on how to minimise the risks of cyberbullying. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered and if you have any concerns about your son, please contact the school counsellor for further information or seek medical or professional help. School TV is available via the St Brendan’s College website as on ongoing resource of information relating to the health and wellbeing of your son. Here is the link to the Cyberbullying edition of SchoolTV - Click Image.
