23.01.2022 Hidden in Plain View There is the untidiness we get from accumulating dust and dirt that we track into our home. And there is the untidiness from things left lying about. We can greatly reduce the problem of things lying about if we have sufficent storage place to keep all our belongings. So we create some useful sotrage space that gives us more room in the home.... Under the stairs. Fine for things that we occasionally need. Add some shelves. Hang pots and cooking equipment overhead in the cupboard. Inside cupboard doors. Have a spice rack inside the door, or hang cleanig supplies there. A neat chest under the coffee table. Under the couch. Boxes under the bed for clothes. Add a shelf under the bathroom cabinet. Keep things low to the floor or high above your head, so there is more space at our height. 23.01.2022 Oil Stains Oil stains on clothing are troublesome, but they can often be dealt with if we get to the quickly. Regular clothing.... - Remove as much oil as possible with a butterknife. - Blot the area with a white paper towel. Do not rub as this puches the stain further in. - Cover the area with cornstarch or baking soda, this soaks up the oil. Leave this for half an hour than brush clean. - Repeat the cornstarch if nessesary. - Put a stain remover like sard wonder soap on the area. leave for about 30 minutes. - Put the clothing in the regular wash. We can do this once per week. one a month we can take the mattress outside and beat it with a broom. Cover the mattress with baking soda (not baking powder) for an hour, and then vacuum. UV light appears to kill dust mites, but you need long exposure. a quick wave of the UV wand in not sufficient. Perhaps leaving the mattress in the Sun for a few hours is a good idea. A mattress protector, which encloses the entire mattress, will greatly reduce the problems with dust mites and keep the whole mattress much cleaner. And they are probably bad for both the pipes and our health. One worthwhile alternative is to use vinegar and baking soda.... Start by pouring boiling water down the drain. Then pour a mixture of vinegar and baking soda. This will produce a lot of foam. Let this settle, and your drain should at least partly clear. Repeat if necessary. They use steam to effectively clean and disinfect floors, so there is no need for chemicals. They also remove the need to have a seperate bucket for the water, so cleaning is quicker and easier.... Steam mops are ideal for tiled floors, and seem fine for vinyl. But there is some concern over wooden floors. Certainly unsealed timber will be harmed by steam. Accumulated dust can even be a fire hazard. Vacuuming will remove most of this. A can of compressed air can be useful for some vent cleaning. Oven hoods - Like air vents these remove a lot of grease and odours from the air. But all that grime has to go somewhere. Clean every month or two. Inside fridges and freezers - bacteria can be frozen solid, only to reappear on food as it defrosts. Clean the insides of these whitegoods with vinegar and bicarb of soda. Remote controls - we put our hand on these all the time, and spread germ, especially if we were eating as we used the TV. Wipe these down with antibacterial wipes. Computers - these accumulate crumbs and coffee spills. This is a sticky layer of detergent, soap or other substance that attracts and hold dirt. If we want to get the tiled surface look good, we need to remove this sticky residue. Try making a... paste of vinegar and bi carb of Soda. Leave this on the tiles for 30 minutes, and the wash with warm water. Hose down the area if possible.
