15.01.2022 Tomorrow marks the Lunar New Year (also known as Chinese New Year), the first day of a fifteen-day festival celebrated by Chinese communities and other Asian cu...ltures around the world. The event signifies the first new moon of the lunar calendar. According to Chinese astrology, each lunar year is associated with one of twelve animals. Tomorrow represents the beginning of Year of the Ox, an animal associated with positive characteristics such as hardwork and honesty in Chinese culture. Many of the practices and celebrations surrounding Lunar New Year relate to luck and prosperity. For example, houses are often thoroughly cleaned approximately 10 days beforehand to symbolically remove lingering bad luck from the previous year and welcome a new beginning. Chinese families also exchange red envelopes (also known as red packets or ‘lai see’) containing money to symbolise good fortune and prosperity. The end of the Lunar New Year festivities is marked by the Lantern Festival. On this night, families light up colourful lanterns and enjoy special dishes reserved for the event, such as ‘fa gao’ (prosperity cake).

11.01.2022 Did you know nearly every province in Austria, apart from Vienna, shares a border with another European country? Austria borders eight different nations in tota...l: Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Italy, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. The Swiss-Austrian border in the Alps is pictured here. Such close contact with other countries has fostered cultural diversity between regions and cities in Austria. This is often noticeable in the way language, dialects, foods, architecture and celebrations vary across the country. Austrians are generally proud of their regional identities and it is quite normal for people to show loyalty to their local area. Nonetheless, Austrians also feel connected to the broader national identity. Such regional distinctions have also somewhat diminished since the advent of mass media and increased mobility.
