25.01.2022 This week’s Maths game is Nice and Nasty Numbers. This game is played with a partner. Player A rolls a 10 sided dice, or a 6 sided dice if this is all you have, and puts their number in one of their squares. Player B does the same. Continue until all 6 boxes are filled (three each). The winner is the one with the largest 3 digit number. You cannot change where your number is written once you have put it in a box. Variations: Play again but the nearest to 500 wins. You can choose to put the number in your own grid or in your partner’s grid. The first roll must be put into your partner’s grid but you can choose where to put it. The second roll must be put into your partner’s grid but you can choose where to put it. The person with the smallest number wins. Play with 4 boxes each so your numbers are in the 1,000s. Have fun!

25.01.2022 They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning. We w...ill remember them. Lest we forget.

24.01.2022 This week’s Maths game is 101 and Out. This game is played with a partner. The aim of this game is to reinforce place value. You will need a pencil, paper and a dice. Take turns to roll the dice. You can choose to take that number as a one or a ten. E.g. if a 5 is rolled it can be a 5 or 50. Each player can choose to stop when they get close to 100 and wait until their partner chooses to stop. The winner is the closest to 100 without going over. Have fun!

22.01.2022 This week’s Maths problem is about money. You need coins for this problem. I have 4 coins in my pocket. What is the minimum amount I could have? What is the maximum amount I could have? How many different ways are possible? Make a Money Spider. Can you think of 8 different ways to write $1.00? Can you think of 12 different ways to write $2.00? Have fun!

16.01.2022 The COVID-19 situation can change rapidly. Make sure you’re up to the date with the latest advice and Public Health Directions if you need to travel, both in th...e ACT and in the states and territories you intend to travel through. Right now, we’re urging Canberrans not to go to areas where COVID-19 outbreaks are occurring currently, this includes all of Victoria, Greater Sydney, and locations across New South Wales. There are also restrictions on NSW and ACT residents entering Queensland from today. Avoiding unnecessary travel is just another measure we can take to reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19. This is in addition to maintaining physical distance, practising good hygiene, staying at home if you’re unwell, and getting tested if you have symptoms of COVID-19. More information is available on our page www.covid19.act.gov.au/travel

11.01.2022 This week’s Maths game is called I spy with my little eye. You need a pack of cards, ace to 10. Any number of people can play. Deal the cards face up in an array of 10x4. The first player challenges the second player to find 2 cards next to each other that equal a particular number. The first player says I spy with my little eye 2 cards that equal.. The second player looks for 2 numbers next to each other either horizontally or vertically. They can then pick up the cards... and add them to their pile. Take it in turns to spy numbers. If a player cannot find 2 cards for a number the player to their right may find 2 numbers. Continue until all cards are gone. Variations: Change the operation to subtraction. Add 3 numbers.

07.01.2022 This week’s Maths problem is Domino Trains. Your dominoes need to be joined end to end to make a domino train totalling a certain number. The only rule is that dominoes may only be joined if the number of dots on the ends of adjacent dominoes, match. Try to make a 40 dot train using exactly 10 dominoes. Make a 50 dot train. What is the longest train that may be formed? What is the shortest train? Have fun!

06.01.2022 This week’s Maths game is Number Buddies. You need a calculator for this game. Player A types in a 2 digit number and shows it to their partner eg 34. Player B attempts to put in the number that added to Player A’s number will result in the sum of 100. If Player B adds 66 the screen will show 100 and they score a point. Repeat a number of times, swapping roles. The winner is the first person to reach 10 points. Use the Jump Strategy to help you work out the answer eg. 44, 54, 64, 74, 84, 94 +6=66 Have fun!

03.01.2022 This week’s Maths game is a form of Hangman called Maths Flowers. Draw one dash for each number and symbol in the equation. e.g._ _ _ _ _ _ (6 dashes for 5+6=11) or _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ (8 dashes for 87-25=62)... Player A writes down an algorithm and hides this. They then write the number of dashes needed. Take turns to say a digit or symbol. Write down the symbol or number given in the correct place or write the number given if it is incorrect. e.g. Player B asks if there is a + sign. Fill in the sign. _+_ _ _ _ Player C asks if there is an equals sign. _+_=_ _ Player B asks if there is a 9. For each incorrect number or symbol, draw a circle, then 5 petals, 1 stem, 2 leaves. Continue to play until the equation is solved or the flower is complete to determine the winners. Have fun!

02.01.2022 This week’s Maths game is Last Number Standing. This game is for the whole family. The aim of this game is to reinforce place value and recognise how numbers are written in the 100s and 1 000s. Players stand and write a 2, 3 or 4 digit number depending on the age of players. A caller starts calling out different place value amounts one at a time eg. Sit down if you have a 2 in the tens place. Each player reads out the number they have as they sit down. Continue to call out instructions: Sit down if you have a 4 in the ones place. Sit down of you have a 9 in the thousands place. Sit down if you have a 9 in the hundreds place. Keep calling out numbers until there is only one person standing. This person reads out their number as they are the last person standing and the winner. Have fun!
