Born out of the brutal Australian lockdown and honed from recycled Australian car tyres, the ‘Brutalis’ light by the incredible @acusticolighting (pictured) was the inspiration for this backdrop containing Australian red and rare lilac ochre; crushed into a natural lime wash and speaking of the same dusty red roads those old car tyres have traversed. . Anyone in need of beautiful Australian-made lighting with award winning acoustic properties, hit up Sam fro...m @acusticolighting ! . What a privilege to peel back layers of paint to reveal the original plaster walls of the old bank that has found new life as Lygon Street’s new local @teller.brunswickeast . Here, we used our knowledge of plaster, paints, glazes and artistry to create a wall finish that reveals and retains the original solid green-stained plaster that has persisted under layers of cream and beige paint for over a century, whilst bringing to life the... new colour-story of this grand old building: inky navy, rich tones and an imperfect warm brassy patina. . Designed to be a talking point, an art piece, a moment of beautiful imperfection and a glorious celebration of the many stories this building has born witness to, this wall is much more than just a finish. 09.01.2022 Lockdown Paradise . Every time we work with @kalicavanagh there seems to be a lockdown, and this was no exception! Luckily our project was also our accomodation, so we hid ourselves away at @vintagehousedaylesford and swathed the walls in dreamy layers of aged plaster, washes of warm colour inspired by old paper, and natural handmade lime wash coloured golden with clay from the backyard. . This is their spirit level, sitting on its matching natural distemper paint, chosen for it’s smooth, matte surface with zero sheen to interrupt the delivery of colour to your eye. ... . Why did we match a plastic object with natural paint? Hard to say, when arguably acrylic (plastic) paint makes logical sense. But I just love the contrariness of this total celebration of form and colour. . My background is many years of colour matching for the commercial paint world, so talk to us about how we can weave this skill into your project. 08.01.2022 When the Bloody Shiraz @fourpillarsgin matches one of your local colours (the deep purple tips of gum leaves selected by Mike Baker and matched by myself for Local Colour), you just have to paint a backdrop and throw together a photoshoot in honour of such an eerie coincidence! . This spectacular shot of our tipple for Wednesday’s Local Colour #melbournedesignweek event was taken by @mikebakerphotographer and ‘styled’ by me using backdrops painted in the black-purple gum hue,... with scattered gum arabic crystals (an ingredient in paint and food) and the very same leaf that was matched exactly a year ago (now dried and reddened). .
