25.01.2022 Another day, another GF on Foxtel - 1979 Collingwood v Carlton. Pretty gripping actually. Just waiting, waiting, waiting for that magical Wayne Harmes moment in the last quarter... was it over the line? Some of the ball definitely... all of it? Anyhoo, found my 1979 card of him... geez that wasn't the best Scanlens year re footy card design etc. I think it was the first year they started to bundle the cards players according to their teams. It was his Rookie Card of course. He also featured in at least 3 other sets. For the record, he won the Norm Smith medal (the first time it was awarded) for his awesome game in the Blues' 5 point win. Go figure, he was actually Norm Smith's nephew. So he played 169 games for the Blues and kicked 86 goals.

21.01.2022 Hi all - a great question from a reader that got me thinking... who do you think is one of the lesser known players to find himself on a Scanlens footy card? My first thought was Gordon Lindquist - 1973 card #47. He played for Geelong... a bit of research and I discover his name is actually Gregory Lindquist; he wore jumper No 8 and played 8 games for the Cats... Be interested if anyone happy to share a suggestion!

18.01.2022 A long awaited i'm sure and much deserved apology for Robert Muir from the St Kilda footy club recently. Not sure how many footy cards Robert featured on, but I can definitely remember a few. I think his first would have been 1975 - that was the year there were two tones of colour (whiter and a duller colour) on the backs of the cards. Different grades of paper. You rubbed a coin to answer a question. Then he featured again in the 1977 series... the year the cards had that blue border. Also 1978. Great jigsaw pic of the 1977 grand final on the backs of the cards.

11.01.2022 Summer on Fox Footy - when else would you find yourself watching the 1971 Grand Final? St Kilda got themselves 27 points ahead by halfway through the 3rd quarter and were looking the goods for their 2nd flag. Then John Kennedy moves Bob Keddie to full forward, and Peter Hudson (who knew that he was suffering from concussion... how times have changed!) to centre half-forward. "You'll have to win it for it for us, Bob." So the rumour goes, were the words Kennedy spoke to him in... the huddle. Even better, some graffiti in Hawthorn that grand final week along the lines of, "What would you do if Jesus came to Hawthorn?" "Move Hudson to Centre half-forward." So Keddie kicks 4 in the last quarter and the Hawks win it 12.10 to 11.9, having been down 5.7 to 8.9 at three-quarter time. Hudson kicked 3, needing 4 to break Bob Pratt's (ridiculous in a totally nice way!) record of 150 goals. His last two kicks went into the man on the mark then out on the full... but both SO kickable. Anyway, Bob Keddie, legend status. Played 132 games for Hawthorn between 65 and 72. Only the one footy card, #36 from the 1972 set. There was also a mini poster of him. They made 12 of them in 1971, the year from that era without cards... totally tragic. See more

05.01.2022 Last summer I started putting up some pretty random posts featuring various scanlens cards, years, players etc... sometimes it was as simple as the day of the month and the first card that came into my head... can recall most of the card numbers and players from the late 60s and 70s sets of cards... so 15th of November and Gary Merrington, 1970 series comes to mind... (go figure!) 5c a pack back in the day and I reckon Gary Merrington was quite a common card. You only got 4 (correct me if I'm wrong) cards in the pack, so it was a massive disappointment if you got two of the same card. There were only 3 Footscray players in the 1970 set - Ricky Spargo No 46 and George Bisset No 48. Gary M played 174 games between 1966 and 1975, mostly as a defender. His son Andrew played a handful of games for Carlton before heading to WA.
