05.05.2022 Challenge accepted A Mitchell Shire client asked if I could install a safety hand rail on their back yard steps and this was the result. Heavy duty galvanised post and rail set in concrete bases.
29.04.2022 What happens to concrete paving stones when expansion joints aren't allowed for in the pattern? On hot days they pop up at their weakest points. Now that Summer swimming season is over here in Vic, it's time for some pool paving maintenance for a Sunbury client. Old silicone and adhesive needs to be removed, loose sand and concrete cleaned out and surfaced dried ready for new adhesive and sealant.
15.04.2022 Time out this week to house & dog sit for some friends on the Mornington Peninsula. My charges Rascal & Barney just smashed BBQ Pork Dumpling with Noodles and Veggies.
10.04.2022 Been helping a Mitchell Shire family on a monthly budget plan turn their rear courtyard into a more friendly, usable area. Being a new property, little work had been done on the yard and this project came with the challenge of very limited access so everything had to be done by hand including carting the crushed sandstone up the side walkway using buckets. A large gas hot water service had been installed over the side path which meant a wheelbarrow couldn’t get passed it.
01.04.2022 Been a bit of labour & sweat in this job but think the finished result was worth the effort.
21.03.2022 Replacing an old warped timber retaining wall with Galv Post/Concrete Sleepers is the task for our client this week.
24.01.2022 Elevated end fascia scrape, sand, patch & repaint for Mitchell Shire customer.
22.01.2022 Feature wall cut in and painted this morning for a client in Lower Plenty.
22.01.2022 Clean out, dry up and recaulked shower for client in Bundoora. The masking tape takes a bit of prep time however the upside is clean & straight caulk lines.
22.01.2022 Nice little day job for a local cafe client building custom wall shelving with #bjcconcepts. Calculated the timber just right with only a small bucket of kindling left over.
20.01.2022 Gutter clean out for local client where this was 15 years of build up from new. If gutters aren’t cleaned and maintained the mud and moisture left sitting like this will eventually rust the gutter out and become a more costly replacement. Overflowing gutters can also flow back under eaves and damage internal paint & walls. #guttercleaning #scarpsservices
20.01.2022 If you need a low maintenance person, send me a message. I have a few days available for smaller jobs in the next few weeks.
18.01.2022 Back on the garden tools today hedging my hopes on a straight line for a client in Broadford. We may have been here before
17.01.2022 Gutter clean out job today for a client in Mitchell Shire. What’s the risk if you don’t clean out your gutters on a regular basis? Tree and leaf mulch can & will fill the gutters as seen here absorbing water in winter that can rust your gutter and overflow onto facias and eaves when the down pipes block up. Overflowing water will cause timber to rot and water stains.... In Summer the dry leaf & twig litter can be a fire risk if embers were to fall into the gutters and potentially set fire to the timber roof trusses and wall frames.
13.01.2022 Let’s talk about weeds! After several years of drought and then in the last week a good dumping of rain, I’m beginning to see and pick out hundreds, maybe thousands of small weed heads coming up through the garden, paving and gravel walkways. In the past I more than likely got out the bottle of round up and sprayed widely and profusely. Obviously not doing that today understanding that glyphosate is not as non-residual as we were told.... So what’s the answer? Sadly there’s no easy fix, here however are my tips and what I now use/do. Feel free to add your non chemical tips in the comments. Tip number 1 - don’t use black plastic or weed mat. These products only stop weeds growing where the seeds are in the soil underneath and we now understand that black plastic stops the soil underneath from breathing and can turn it into a sour mess. These products don't stop the seeds from growing that are blown into your yard or from weeds in your yard that are allowed to mature and drop their seeds into the top soil above the weed mat. If you really want to use a product under your mulch and gravel that is somewhat non chemical and non toxic, try unprinted paper or cardboard. This will kill off/block the dormant seeds underneath until it breaks down and becomes mulch in it’s own right. Tip number 2 - don’t set aside a day to weed. Reality is this day will never happen, or if it does, you’ll get bored of it after an hour, maybe two at best. Then within a week, you’ll find new weeds sprouting through the freshly weeded area and you’ll be less motivated to do it again. You’ll start thinking about that chemical solution that can and will poison your soil and build up to toxic proportions over time. My tip here is spend 10/15minutes every day or every other day and pick out the weeds as they start to break through the topsoil/mulch in a small area or patch. Keep them in a small dry rubbish bin with a lid and over time they'll compost down and you can use it to put back onto your garden. If the weeds have seed heads, put them straight into your kerbside bin. This stops the job becoming monotonous and back breaking and yes you will find yourself going over the same areas again and again, but only for 15mins at a time. Tip number 3 - call/message your friendly local handy person to come on a regular basis and weed for you

10.01.2022 Deck area tidy up for Mitchell Shire client prepping home for sale.
09.01.2022 Replaced cracked bathroom tile for client in Wallan. Tricky part was chiselling out the cracked tile and adhesive without damaging any of the adjacent tiles.
08.01.2022 Something a little different today. Installed 2 safety mirrors on a driveway entry/exit for a customer in Sunbury.
08.01.2022 To all my customers, clients and friends. In line with #socialdistancing & #covid19australia directives and guidelines, Scarps Services is now applying #stayathome rules and not taking any new business except in the case of emergency repairs to maintain home safety or maintenance was required. Wishing you, your family & friends a safe time over coming weeks & months.
08.01.2022 What to do when the client has had just a few tiles fall off the wall and break? Nearly impossible these days to find and match 30 year old tiles so next best option is to create a feature panel. Showers of this age have never been waterproofed but today’s standard however as this shower is on an upper level and there’s no evidence of water leakage downstairs, we opted to just replace the broken tiles this time. Have already discussed that if water leakage ever occurs, next time it will be a full shower strip & rebuild.
06.01.2022 Heritage fence repaint came up a treat for a client in Plenty.

01.01.2022 About to find yourself WFH (working from home) or worse case in self isolation for 14days? What will you do with yourself for this length of time? There’s only so much internet scrolling and Netflix binging to be done and you still need to look after body mind and soul. My wife’s already told me she’d possibly Murder me if I was stuck at home for any length of time... Consider now all those to do list jobs at home and consider this your rainy day opportunity. Think about what you might need to prebuy from your local hardware and gardening store in preparation. Here’s an interesting website group I found that might help out. https://www.stayathomemum.com.au/houseandhome/organisation/
