My approach... when recording these drum performances is not to get too familiar with the tune. I'll listen first more than I'll play through. I'll listen to the drumless take and interpret it the way I feel it, as best I can. I do my best to put my own stamp on it and not copy verbatim the part that Joel Rosenblatt plays on this tune, which can be challenging because Joel makes such good musical/rhythmic choices. This is the result of about 6-8 playthroughs and then 4 takes I think.. (no more than 6) Hopefully it has a feeling of spontaneity to make up for any wobbles but it's an accurate example of what I can do with this material in a realistic time frame (basically a simulated session) Your feedback and constructive criticism is always welcome. 17.01.2022 This is a groove I came up with that I quite like. I guess you could hear it as a half time 4/4 triplet feel with 3 on the hats. Or 6 with 4 on the hats. I've used it on an original tune. you can get a lot of milage out of it when you start layering percussion. Let me know what you think. Cheers, Jonno

14.01.2022 Just a little stamina excersise playing 16th notes in the right hand continuously without stopping for 14/15 minutes. Nothing flash. Threw some random GB loops over the top. This is 95bpm which is fairly comfortable, around Georgy Porgy tempo. You could increase the speed and decrease the time or whatever.

01.01.2022 I'm sure you've all used practice pads and still do. Here are the original Billy Hyde 'Natural Rebound' Practice Pads. Hand made in Flemington, Melbourne Australia (circa 1960) that went on to become internationally known. This set was handed down to me by my Father (Billy's nephew) and are the very pads I used as a kid. They've got rims!!! Hope you enjoy this cool little piece of Australian drumming history.
