22.01.2022 In accordance with Victorian government requirements we will not be operating any classes for the time being. Unless otherwise notified this will be maintained until the 4th of June. While we are technically able to run the class tonight before the lockdown comes into effect, we have decided cancel tonight's class to simplify the situation and avoid any overlap with lockdowns for those experiencing longer travel times. Thanks for your understanding, and look forward to recommencing fencing soon.

17.01.2022 Doctor: you’ve torn two tendons in your right shoulder, don’t do anything strenuous with it My Brain: No problem! I’ll just tie my right arm to my body so I can’t move it, then I can still train with swords... right....??? One thing I have discovered from this experiment is that trying to do German longsword with your arm tied down turns out looking like Fiore!

16.01.2022 It’s great to be back fencing again following the recent lockdown. Some Daniel vs Daniel action from tonight’s first class back.

15.01.2022 You're probably all getting bored in lockdown, so here's something to really hit home how desperate for entertainment you are. Whiteboard discussion of simplifying lots of things into 3 or 4 basic movements. The general principle here is that there are a handful of patterns which can be unpacked to address the most common fencing situations.... Remember, this is all about generalisations; these aren't "rules", they're guidelines on how to think about fewer things while you're fencing The video is best watched at 1.5x speed... because its long :D Thanks to Joanne for taking the video

15.01.2022 It was great to see so many people taking advantage of the perfect weather for some free play before official classes begin in the coming weeks!

13.01.2022 Winding movements found in Meyer’s fencing. Unlike his predecessors he focuses on the cut and slice, as well as winding to outside lines for the blind strike, and grappling through below with the pommel for his winding through shown in the last movement.

11.01.2022 With areas of Australia going back into COVID restrictions, you'll all be needing something to occupy your time. How about 19th Century Sabre, for a change! Sabre, like boxing, reduces the number of actual "techniques" to a mere handful. This means it's a great testing-ground for pedagogy and fencing theory.... This is actually part of a larger sabre video that I've split in two (the other part will be released soon) In this section we'll talk about Opportunity, Protection, and Threat, as a simple way of understanding fencing, and guiding your training and fencing practice. Thanks to Victor Harder Hesel for suggesting a sabre video. YouTube link for those who prefer it: https://youtu.be/sUAMy67sPXY

10.01.2022 The sword gods blessed us with perfect weather for our first casual session back after 3 months of lockdown. We’re really looking forward to recommencing official classes in the next fortnight. Stay tuned for news on dates and locations.

09.01.2022 Facing the common foe! Club members facing off against themselves in our final class last week before we went into lockdown.

08.01.2022 Our latest video considering feints in 19th century sabre (though applicable to most similar methods). We look at some of the theory and mechanics of feints, as well as the type of situations and opponents we can use them on. This one's taken a while - better late than never! 08.01.2022 Messing around with Zornhut

07.01.2022 With Melbourne in lockdown and fencing out of the question, Scholar Victoria recently held the LORDS OF LOCKDOWN - a light-hearted in-house competition to alleviate the boredom and encourage playing with swords. The goal was simple: post an interpretation of one or more of Meyer's plays with the entrant's preferred weapon. Thank you to those who submitted entries; we hope you had fun performing your plays - we certainly had fun reviewing them.... PLACINGS: 1st Daniel Romano & Katherine (joint entry) 2nd Ben Stockdale 3rd Tied - Gavin Corben and Joanne Pitts 4th James Stallard 5th @Clark Jurisic 6th Bryce Exley Congratulations to everyone who competed!!!

05.01.2022 Our last video was fencing-theory heavy, so for those of you who haven't picked up a sabre for a while (or perhaps are just starting out), this video goes back to basics! This time we'll spend some time on one of the cornerstones of sabre fencing - footwork. The movements in this video are drawn predominantly from Waite, with additional influence from Hutton (and thus from French foil as well!).

05.01.2022 Tonight marks the halfway point in our introduction to sabre course, and everyone is looking great

04.01.2022 Two flavours of a simple advance in Pflug The first transition is through longpoint, extending and then advancing to meet the position of the sword. The second is a turn of the hip into a kind of contrapposto position with the hip turned out. ... The first advances with a threat, the second with a cover; both looking different from the conventional simple pass and guard change. Variations like this are a great way of practicing fundamentals when you’re not able to fence properly (such as when rehabbing from injury)

02.01.2022 Actions on the outside line. A final private training session before we go back into full lockdown for another 6 weeks. So lucky to have such a great crew to work with at the club. ... #historicalfencing #longsword #joachimmeyer

02.01.2022 Getting a smooth whipping cast into a cross cut for Meyer’s windthauw... or trying to Pre stage 4 lockdown and pre injury fun. #joachimmeyer #longsword
