11.01.2022 The UQ Union believes that many of the problems facing humanity this century will be solved by humanities students. Already this century, we have seen worrying ...trends towards a political process characterised by polarisation, the advent of harmful technologies like deep fakes, and a media landscape undermined by disinformation. Now more than ever, we need skilled graduates in humanities to tackle these unique challenges. We need journalists and communications professionals with skills for finding and reporting the truth. We need political scientists who can navigate and address all the problems posed by extremism. We need historians who understand how societies have been challenged in the past, the goals we need to strive for, and the pitfalls to avoid. If we are going to save humanity tomorrow, we need to save the humanities today. For these reasons, we cannot disagree more with todays announcement of a fee hike for humanities students. We call on the Federal Government to reconsider.

The Schonell holds a special place in the hearts of many past and present UQ studen...ts, as well as the wider Brisbane community. Since UQU constructed and began operating the Schonell in 1970, the theatre has been a bastion of creative arts at UQ. In the present day, Schonell showcases UQs vast and diverse performing arts scene, presenting student-run plays and performances. Our industry is committed to reducing the risk of community transmission in the general public and protecting and promoting the health and safety of our workers and audiences. We've released a comprehensive set of COVID Safe guidelines to help the live performance industry prepare to reopen venues and resume productions. The guidelines cover auditions, rehearsals and performances, as well as touring of live performances. The Performing Arts Connections (PAC) Australia guidelines for COVID Safe Theatres have also been revised and updated.
