24.01.2022 One of my students, Annette, made these very cleverly designed wooden bread tongs. A very effective tool and even has a magnet in the top to keep the tongs on the toaster. I believe it was such a success that her friends were wanting some as well! 12.01.2022 Drilling a hole in a piece of timber, for whatever purpose, is basically a very simple operation, but there is a wide variety of drill bits from which to choose to drill a particular hole. Here are a few that you may come across. High speed steel twist bit probably the most commonly used drill bit. Can be used to drill both timber and metal. Spade or flat bits These are helpful for large diameter holes, however they tend to produce inaccurate and untidy results. Forstner-...type bits Top of the range for most diameter requirements. Principal characteristic is that it drills a flat bottomed hole. Plug cutter The plug cutter cuts a ring in the timber leaving a core in the centre which is precise in diameter to fit into the hole drilled for it. Countersink This is a bit which widens the mouth of a drilled hole into a conical shape, so that a countersunk screw head can lie flush with the surrounding material. Hole saws Consist generally of a 6.35mm drill bit mounted into an arbor, through which an arm of adjustable length extends, which carries a cutter at one end that cuts the circle.
