24.01.2022 Mitochondrial Monday It's been a hot minute/month since I last posted - I'm finding it hard to make time for making at the moment, so please accept this little throwback to one of my favourite designs to see if it'll kickstart some social media motivation. Mitochondria are thought to originate from one cell engulfing or eating another, way back when (at least 1.45 billion years ago ).... If you like this design (and made it this far in the caption ) the silvery grey pair is still available in the shop! Or let me know what colours you wanna see #ScienceEarrings #ScienceGifts #SlowFashion #STEM #StatementEarrings #WomenInSTEM #WomenInScience #ShopSmall #mitochondria #biology #HandmadeInAustralia #HandmadeWithLove #handmade @ Sydney, Australia

23.01.2022 All about the brain! The first image is one of my favourite custom creations for Day 26 of #MarchMeetTheMaker. It's a pair of hippocampus earrings I made for a good friend and great scientist. They're based off a microscope photo she took that ended up on the cover of the scientific journal Hippocampus (swipe to see the cover) The last pic shows my starting point (the prompt for Day 25) - the first science-y pair of earrings I made and one of my first ever creations, this time of the whole brain! These were a super cute birthday pressie for another great friend/scientist. Can you tell I'm inspired by my fellow women in science? @ Sydney, Australia

23.01.2022 Making rainbows and love hearts on a rainy Saturday Made myself some colour swatches inspired by @hellorobbo so I can start using more of my many coloured clays I've got some new things coming - aiming for a release next weekend In the meantime, if you want a Valentine's/Galentine's/Palentine's gift for a special someone there's still some stuff on the website (link in bio), including gift vouchers perfect for last minute gifts ... . . . #love #polymerclay #colourpop #color #rainbow #lovelove #galentinesday #palentinesday #valentines #slowfashion #handmadeinaustralia #handmadewithlove #handmade #shopsmall #smallbusiness #smallbusinessaustralia @ Sydney, Australia

22.01.2022 Something a bit different, but still Sci Candy hopefully! Made these #coasters at an awesome #LaserCutting workshop @darlingsquare @cityofsydney library, in their #IdeasLab. They're all patterns I drew based on different parts of a cell and I love how they turned out! The X's and circles represent #DNA and the #nucleus, the flowery-looking design are the centrioles, and the last weird looking blobs are #golgi bodies. ... What do you think?! Is this something to pursue or should I stick to earrings (and lots of colour )? @ Darling Square

20.01.2022 Happy Easter! Not an but a mitochondrion. 18.01.2022 Necklaces coming to the shop this Sunday night! First we have a resin-coated, hand-drawn Purkinje neuron (see last photo for a close up) then a cute little dendritic cell and finally a particle wave Hope you like them! @ Sydney, Australia

17.01.2022 New mitochondria earrings to power through Monday On the website now (link in bio) I worked out a new process for making these that makes it less time consuming for me so I was able to reduce the price a little for you guys too Hope you like them! ... #shopsmall #sciencegifts #biology #earringsoftheday #earringlover #earrings #handmade @ Sydney, Australia

16.01.2022 Throwback Thursday. These were a custom order for some friends who work with G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs). They told me to make them multi-coloured because these receptors are crazy - they can do anything! So what are GPCRs? They sit on the surface of our cells and act like a kind of inbox for chemicals. In the brain, they detect many of our most important neurotransmitters (a fancy word for brain chemicals), including serotonin and dopamine. If you're interested i...n a custom order just send me a DM, I love a challenge (For day 16 of #MarchMeetTheMaker = From the Archive... i know I'm super behind!) #sciencegifts #custommade #customdesign #customjewelry #teachergifts #smallbusiness #ScienceIsForEveryone #slowfashion #shopsmall #colourfulearrings #colourful @ Sydney, Australia

11.01.2022 Back in black! Let's see how many #MarchMeetTheMaker cues I can catch up on Here's a #WorkInProgress (Day 8) with a bit of a learning curve (Day 9) thrown in. My first attempt at making my own screen (does that count for Day 22 - Hands On ?) I was super excited about this but then there were big parts of the screen that didn't expose properly so the paint couldn't go through (and it was really blocky where it did go through). The silver lining (Day 19) was that I used... that failed screen to make a raised impression on the clay instead. And since then I fixed up the design a little, made a new version with a better screen from @ezscreenprint that I can actually use to print #makersofinstagram #polymerclay #process #polymerclayearrings #eotd #earringlover #earringsoftheday #microbiome #handmade #handmadewithlove #handmadeinaustralia @ Sydney, Australia

11.01.2022 That mind-body connection I made this vagus nerve pendant for a wonderful friend and scientist who just got a new job . Technically, the vagus is a group of nerves that connect nearly every organ in the body to the brain. That makes it a multi-tasker, involved in nearly everything we do Stimulating the vagus nerve with electrical impulses is used to treat both epilepsy and treatment resistant depression.... #VagusNerve #NervousSystem #brain #CranialNerves #CreativeScientist #SciArt #ScienceGifts #ScienceEarrings #SlowFashion #handmade #HandmadeInAustralia #WomenInSTEM #ScienceIsForEveryone #ScienceJewelry #ShopSmall #HandmadeWithLove #TeacherGifts #TeachersOfInstagram #ScientistsWhoSelfie #ScientistsOfInstagram #Biology #GradSchool #GradGift #BeautifulBiology @ Sydney, Australia

10.01.2022 Valentine's Voles These little cuties are Prairie voles. This species (Microtus ochrogaster) is special because they tend to be monogamous, forming pair bonds with their mates, co-parenting and living together in family groups. They're often contrasted with the more promiscuous Meadow vole (Microtus pennsylvanicus). By studying these two species with such different relationship styles, scientists have learned so much - especially about the hormone *oxytocin*. Vole resea...rch was key in identifying oxytocin's role in promoting bonding and attachment, making it known as "the love hormone" (though we now know it does much more than this!) P.s. is it too lame to mention that vole is an anagram for love?

09.01.2022 Did you know yesterday was DNA Day? Me neither, whoops! DNA Day celebrates the discovery of the double helix shape of DNA in 1953 and the completion of the Human Genome Project 50 years later, which mapped all of the base pairs in human DNA. As the basic building block of life, it's wild that everyone is made up of combinations of only four different bases or nucleotides. I hope I managed to capture some of that beauty and simplicity in these gold dangles! @ Sydney, Australia

07.01.2022 Science is for everyone. This is my core value behind Sci Candy. I believe science should be fun and accessible to everyone, not just those in the ivory tower. Too often, people are excluded from science because of their race, gender, appearance, opportunity (incl. wealth) or level of education. But being creative, having a different perspective and having interests outside of your scientific research are real strengths - many Nobel laureates talk about the value of a broader... outlook. Just like in our microbiomes, diversity in science is something that should be valued and nurtured (I actually wrote a blog piece on this for World Microbiome Day, if you're interested). Uplifting the voices and celebrating the achievements of minorities in science is another value I hope to achieve through this little project. Along with that, I value minimising my impact on the environment (though my product is plastic, I hope to make items that are treasured for years to come and to deliver to my customers with as small a carbon footprint as possible), as well as encouraging creative expression and critical thinking. If you made it to the end of this essay, well done and thank you! Lmk if you have feedback on how I can do any of these things better. In the meantime, please enjoy another rainbow to celebrate #MardiGras weekend in Sydney #MarchMeetTheMaker #AustralianMade #SlowFashion #ScienceGifts #SmallBusiness #ScienceIsForEveryone #WomenInSTEM #WomenInScience #CreativeScientist #rainbow #ColourfulEarrings #ColourPop

06.01.2022 Lockdown experiments Been playing with the idea of making my own silicone moulds so I can make reproducible science-y shapes out of resin. Here's my first attempt - not perfect but not bad for a first go! Resin and silicone both from @barnesproducts, black glitter from @madmicas via @blackbirdandviolet

06.01.2022 In need of some power to get me through hump day! Mitochondria are known as the powerhouse of the cell because they generate most of the chemical energy for animal and plant cells, which is then stored in tiny molecules called ATP. I also love their shape! They have both an outer and an inner membrane with a ton of complex folds. The machinery for energy production is found in these folds, specifically in structures called cristae. ... . . . #mitochondria #mitochondriaisthepowerhouseofthecell #mitochondrion #teachergifts #scicandy #scijewelry #sciart #sciencegifts #colourfulearrings #polymerclayearrings #earringlover #slowfashion #eotd #earringsoftheday @ Sydney, Australia

04.01.2022 How cute is @adriram8 looking in her Sci Candy?! I made a fresh pair of loopy brains just for Adriana with a colourful custom top The best part of this whole venture is getting to see my work being worn by brilliant scientists around the world, so hit me up if there's something you wanted on the website that's sold out or if you've got an idea for something new! #WomenInSTEM #WomenInScience #ThisIsWhatAScientistLooksLike #StatementEarrings #SlowFashion #ScienceEarrings #ScienceGifts #SciArt #SmallBusiness #SmallBiz #HandmadeInAustralia #HandmadeWithLove #handmade #CustomMade #HappyCustomer #CustomerLove

03.01.2022 Was feeling a bit sick last week Luckily our immune systems are built for that kind of challenge hopefully some of my macrophage were hunting down and gobbling up any nasty intruders Pacman-style, just like in these phagocytosis dangles (available on my website now - link in bio or just click on the items in each photo) #TeacherGifts #TeacherFashion #ShopSmall #WomenInSTEM #SupportSmallBusiness #SciArt #SlowFashion #ScienceJewelry #ScienceGifts #ScienceFashion #EarringLover #EarringsOfTheDay #eotd #TeacherEarrings #NerdFashion #StatementEarrings #ColourPop #ImmuneSystem #biology @ Sydney, Australia

01.01.2022 Seems like I'm a little obsessed with rainbows at the moment Must be this pattern of rain and sun that's we've been cycling through in Sydney. Getting ready to restock my website this weekend, so I made a few different colours of the treponema hoops that I showed you a little while back.
