15.01.2022 Were back! And thats thank you to all West Aussies who isolated and followed medical and scientific advice during the COVID crisis! As things stand we will once more be able to present our amazing live science shows for WA schools, libraries and vacation care centres in term 3.... Current guidelines are that groups of up to 100 are OK and we will be observing infection control procedures during the shows so its all go for term 3 and Science Week! 10.01.2022 A fitting end to Science Week for Science Alive, grassroots citizen science at its best - thanks for having us at the wonderful Canning River Eco Education Centre science expo, and thanks to the enthusiastic audience!
10.01.2022 Science Alive is very excited to have been invited down to St Mary Mackillop College in Bussleton this week to present shows that look at life, environment, adaption and survival! The Leafy Sea Dragon is an extrodinary example of a living creature that has adapted by using camouflage to stay safe from predators. Scienctists arent sure of the population size of this strange fish, because they are so hard to find!
10.01.2022 Just to let everyone know our junior and senior Water themed shows will still be available this year to tie in with the Science week theme, Deep Blue, innovations for the future of our oceans
10.01.2022 It feels that these days we need Science more than ever, this says it all...
09.01.2022 The Whiteman Parks fabulous Groundwater Festival is on again in November this year. Science Alive has been presenting the key note address for the last 10 years. If you are an upper Primary teacher its worth a look. A whole day of fun, games and water education. Its my favourite day and many techers (especially the ones that return year after year) agree. The rumour is that it will run for 2 days this year and I believe its still free apart from your transport to and fro.
09.01.2022 We are very excited to announce the opening of our new on-line shop, selling a large variety of sciency presents for all the family. Come and visit us at sciencealive.com.au

08.01.2022 Is this the technology for the future of flight? This airplane flies without propellers, engines and uses no fossil fuels. The small model has flown over 60 metres, twice as far as the Wright brothers first ever plane flight in 1903. The plane uses positively charged wires on its wings to create negative ions in the air. These negative ions then rush back to the positive wing and push the plane forward. Find out more at:... https://www.abc.net.au//us-scientists-fly-aeropl/10516032 See more
08.01.2022 Fascinating! And discovered by a curious 15 year old

03.01.2022 Threatened Wildlife Photographic Competition Winners Announced The Australian Wildlife Society Threatened Wildlife Photographic Competition is a national compet...ition that awards and promotes endangered Australian wildlife through the medium of photography. The Australian Wildlife Society invited photographers to raise the plight of endangered wildlife in Australia. Our Society aims to encourage the production of photographs taken in Australia, by Australians, which reflects the diversity and uniqueness of endangered Australian wildlife. The annual judges prize of $1,000 was won by Native Animal Rescue of Western Australia (Mike Jones, Black Cockatoo Coordinator). The winning entry was a photo of a forest red-tailed black cockatoo named Makuru. The forest red-tailed black cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus banksia naso) is listed as Vulnerable; only two of the five subspecies of black cockatoo is listed as threatened on account of habitat destruction and competition for nesting hollows. The photograph was taken in Native Animal Rescues Black Cockatoo Facility (opened 2011 thanks to a generous grant from Lotterywest), which allows them to receive and care for injured or ill black cockatoos. Makuru (a Nyungar word meaning The First Rains or Fertility Season) was the first captive born black cockatoo at the facility in July 2016. The photo depicts the young cockatoo emerging from its breeding hollow at two months and 15 days. The annual peoples choice prize of $500 was won by Matt White Matts entry was a photo of a greater glider (Petauroides volans). He photographed the glider in Brisbane, Queensland. The reason Matt photographed the greater glider is that they are Australias largest glider species and are at great threat of disappearing due to land clearing. The thing he likes about these animals is not one animal is the same and all have various colours. They range in standard black forms to the rare white colour. Their diet consists of eucalypt leaves, similar to the koala which is also facing big challenges, especially in Southeast Queensland. Matt believes that our state and federal governments need to do more to stop habitat loss as gliders need hollows which are only found in trees hundreds of years old. Thank you to all the contributors to the Societys inaugural Threatened Wildlife Photographic Competition please enter again next year. A selection of the photographic entries will be featured in the next edition of our magazine "Australian Wildlife".
