25.01.2022 This November we are inviting people aged 25+ to join us as we sail from Airlie Beach to Brisbane. Along the way we will visit some of the most beautiful places the Great Barrier Reef has to offer. Usually, our Science Under Sail trips are reserved for students to learn about what it is like to be a researcher and participate in a scientific expedition. However, this time we want to invite the adults along for the adventure. You will get a hands-on experience in snorkelling..., sailing, life on a catamaran and encounter some amazing marine creatures as well as have a lot of fun. The trip will begin in Airlie Beach on 15th November and arrive in Brisbane on the 29th of November. So if you are a parent of one of our alumni that’s always wanted to go on a SUSA trip, a recent graduate from university or just someone that loves the ocean and has an interest in marine science then send us an enquiry to [email protected].

19.01.2022 The second part of our extremely successful (and fun!) trip surveying benthic habitats in Moreton Bay in January 2021. We encountered many really cool critters on this one, collected a lot of data and had amazing fun. 18.01.2022 Heading home after a terrific 2 day field trip on Moreton Bay with Redlands College learning about water quality, seagrass and Coral. We experience both the muddy waters of Waterloo Bay to the relatively clean eastern bay (but still dirty due to recent rain). Thanks to Tangalooma for our close encounters with Dolphins!
18.01.2022 We had very limited internet reception in the Whitsundays, so here is a belated premiere of our adventures around these gorgeous islands. We spent five days in the Whitsunday Islands and surveyed a lot of coastline. The water was very murky most of the time and often the visibility was less than a meter. A lot of the coral reefs looked quite unhealthy and overgrown with algae. Even though the water was murky, seagrass was extremely healthy and demonstrated signs of fast grow...th. We found several different species often growing together in mixed meadows. We also saw a lot of sea turtles who benefit from the dense seagrass meadows. 16.01.2022 On one of our days off during our sail from Cairns to Townsville, the crew and students explored Hinchinbrook Island. Located east of Cardwell and north of Lucinda, Hinchinbrook Island is the largest island of the Great Barrier Reef. It remains uninhabited with only 40 people permitted to stay at any one time. The island offers spectacular walking trails with it's famous 32km Thorsborne Trail. With more than 66 bird species, 22 butterfly species, 29 different mangroves and ...many fish and crustaceans, Hinchinbrook has something for all nature lovers. The surrounding waters are home to larger animals such as dugongs and turtles. Hinchinbrook Island is renowned for its range of habitats including misty, heath-covered mountains sandy beaches, paperbark and palm wetlands, and extensive woodlands. Patches of lush rainforest and eucalypt forest descend to a mangrove-fringed channel in the west, with sweeping bays and rocky headlands along the east coast. The island’s mangrove forests are some of the richest and most varied in Australia and are an important breeding ground for many marine animals. For thousands of years the Bandjin Aboriginal people lived on Hinchinbrook Island. Middens and fish traps are reminders of their special culture. The information for this post was taken from QLD Parks and Forests. For more info visit https://parks.des.qld.gov.au/parks/hinchinbrook/about. Music: bakmahn.bandcamp.com Editing: Anai Louise

12.01.2022 Always something new to see
12.01.2022 Orpheus Island presented us with the best snorkelling for the entire trip! To our great surprise, the corals at Orpheus were much healthier than at the outer reefs, especially in the shallow waters of the channel. We found a high diversity of coral around Orpheus- on the Western side there were a lot of soft and boulder corals, while in the channel and on the Eastern side we found an abundance of old and healthy plate corals, along with other hard coral types, indicating a he...althy state of the reef. We also visited the research station that is located on the island and were given a fantastic tour by the station manager Bec Tite. We learned that Orpheus Island corals suffered some damage from cyclones in the last decade, but were recovering well. We also had a chance to learn how the station operates and what research activities they support. The couple of days that we spent at Orpheus Island were very interesting and educating. It certainly offered much more than you would expect from a coral reef that is so close to the mainland. 01.01.2022 Our Great Barrier Reef Expedition 2020 has come to an end. It was an extremely productive and fun season, we covered over a 1,000 kilometres of Queensland coastline and collected 2,129 data points of benthic habitat surveys. We were also keeping regular video blog updates of our progress, and shared our research and adventures on social media, engaging thousands of people in Australia and internationally. Now it is time to analyse the data we collected and prepare Velella for... new exciting projects. Stay tuned for more updates and post with extra material we have from the trip!
