24.01.2022 School Holidays are a great chance to bond with your family and learn about the world we live in. Join us for our July School Holiday events as we share our curious brains and learn together! Some of our events listed will be available to book in coming days, so keep checking or message us with questions.

23.01.2022 Crisp morning at Heyne's Garden Centre for terrariums. We learned a lot- especially how cool it is when the warm wet soil creates the humid environment in our glass enclosures! Everyone's answers were spot on. So engaged. Hello future, your scientists are ready! Microscopesat Fulham Community Center on Friday- places still available. Next week at @heynesgardencentre we have our #GoodBadBugly sessions again. What a fun school holiday we're having!... So many more events on our website sciren.com.au Don't forget adult classes too! Summer Jiang

20.01.2022 Keep your jars out of recycling! We're all about sustainable options here at Sciren. Did you know when you throw your glass jars into your yellow bins, they can smash and the small glass bits can damage the recycling facilities at the waste collection depot? This means large amounts of potentially recyclable material destroys machinery and, in worst cases, ends up going to landfill if it's deemed too difficult to process. Save your glassware for Sciren. Let us know you have ...a box worth, and we'll collect from you or let you know where you can drop them off for us. We're reusing them in our workshops teaching you all about the science of the every day world. We don't care about lids at this stage, and we'll take off labels. So long as they are clean and dry, we're happy to take them off your hands. All sizes. Our unusual faves: VOSS glass water bottles, and SA's own Beerenberg jam jars or Fowlers Vacola !!

20.01.2022 Interested in joining us for activities down south? Take a look at our options. You don't need to be a GTCSA member to sign up

16.01.2022 Have you ever had a close look at plants? I mean, REALLY close? You might be surprised at what secrets are revealed. Check out the last photo to see why these weed seeds will get so caught up in your socks! The scientific name of this plant is Bidens pilosa, but its many common names give away its tricks: farmer’s "friends", devil’s needles, cobbler’s pegs, pitch forks, stick ticks! It’s a weed in the dandelion family (Asteraceae), but instead of blowing away on the wind, the...se seeds get around by sticking to animal fur or our clothing and catching a ride. When seeds are dispersed by animals, scientists call this zoochory (pronounced zoo-oh-cor-ee"). This species is native to the Americas, but it has been successful in establishing itself as a weed in most parts of the world thanks in part to its super effective dispersal strategy. Just check out those barbed spines! It reminds me of fish hooks, harpoons. What an absolute weapon this plant is! Sciren has microscopes available for use at some of our plant science workshops. What plant mystery will your child solve?! This Friday 9th July we have a Plants Under the Microscope workshop at Fulham Community Centre. Head to fulhamcc.com.au and click on Events or click the link below to book tickets! https://fulhamcc.com.au/school-holidays/ #scienceforkids #schoolholidayactivities #plantsunderthemicroscope

14.01.2022 Afternoon sunset on a fresh and crisp wintery July. What a lovely way to spend my day. Urrbrae House Historic Precinct really delivered the goods today. Have you been? They have the most marvellous gardens to picnic in, an amazing app to guide you through the arborteum and even a Waite Community Garden Many of our #Sciren workshops are held here. We're so in love with the space!

08.01.2022 Terrific Terrariums with our scientists at Fulham Community Center this morning. We even had a keen scientist return for a second school holiday event with us, having been to our Bugs event at Heyne's Garden Centre in April. This brings me such joy. I love sharing science with keen and curious people! Tomorrow we're at @heynesgardencentre with terrariums. A few spots left. Head to sciren.com.au and book now. Bookings close 9pm tonight.

07.01.2022 Had a ball hosting Tom's 13th birthday last week and Sugar & Spice Cakes delivered the goods! I've not seen cakes made to look like succulents and be so precise and convincing. I had to be sure I wasn't giving people cake cacti instead of the real ones for their terrarium! And honestly one of the best cupcakes I've ever eaten! Head to our website to enquire about hosting events. (note, the birthday family organised the cakes- not Sciren!)

05.01.2022 New find for me today that was weirdly perfect timing. Currently researching for a #podcast stint coming up (...@agriadventures stay tuned!) @angelakisbrothers @burnsidevillage TUNA SANGAS! but laced with a dainty smackeral of #truffles.... I've not had truffles much and found the taste mild, fruity mushroom, almost olive...which might be due to the preserve fashion of the truffles used. Also found the story behind the stall fascinating. @kinseafood from #portlincoln, original a group of family members in competition with each other, coming together in a union of #kinship, but producing tuna of the #kinstandard... Kin being a Japanese word for gold! Love the story. Not sponsored...yet?? Happy to be...?? Anyhoo, stay tuned for the podcast details...
