13.01.2022 Quality resources for schools, all in one place.
13.01.2022 The SCIS team recently shared a Blog post 'Ten things we love about SCIS': scis.edublogs.org/2020/09/08/ten-things-we-love-about-scis. One by one, we are sharing all of the nifty features that will improve your library catalogue and save you time and money! 4. Collection development... When a teacher approaches you about finding resources for their upcoming unit, where is the first place you look? Perhaps you perform a quick internet search to see if it can direct you to any relevant resources. Maybe you check a publisher’s website. Yet, if we encourage students to use the library catalogue based on its inclusion of trusted, credible and educational resources, why not use a catalogue ourselves? SCIS Data also includes additional information via our subscription to Syndetics. Where the information is available, the record consists of summaries and annotations, author notes, authoritative reviews, and series information. Through our subscription to LibraryThing for Libraries, we can also provide community-generated content, including recommendations, tags, and links to other editions and similar items. Although this additional information is not included in the downloaded record, it can help with searching and selection of records. How good is that?

07.01.2022 We're celebrating Pride Month 2021 and love this list of books complied by Megan Daley. As Megan said, diverse texts play a crucial role in allowing readers to see their life reflected in story and act as powerful agents of cultural change. 01.01.2022 "Comics have long suffered a stigma that is unfortunately frequently reiterated by teachers, parents and librarians. A child is reading a comic or wants to borrow one and a well-meaning grown up says, ‘Pick a real book. Do some reading.’ Every time this happens enormous damage is done, with children being turned away from reading the books that pique their interest. A comic a graphic novel is sequential art. But what is the harm in that? Reading is reading and it is a wel...l-known fact that children who read for fun and find pleasure in reading become lifelong readers. So let’s fight the stigma and discuss some of the literacy superpowers that can be gained by reading comics." Iurgi Urrutia, librarian and ALIA Graphic Novels and Comics Convenor, explores the power of graphic novels in the latest issue of Connections school library journal.
