22.01.2022 With families spending more time at home it is a great opportunity to screen your children and each other for the signs of Scoliosis. Early detection is vital in ensuring the best treatment is provided to avoid any future complications. 2% - 5% of teenagers will develop Scoliosis, and many go undiagnosed until its too late for non-surgical treatment... We have a free in browser app that demonstrates how to check for the signs of scoliosis. Click on the link https://app.scoliscreen.com/ and follow the on screen instructions and get your results instantly.

20.01.2022 Our third webinar for Scoliosis Awareness Month is a live interview with one of our teenage scoliosis patients, Nora-Lee. Before she came to see us, Nora-Lee was diagnosed with scoliosis and referred for surgery, which would have required a full spinal fusion. However, she is an athlete and Hip Hop dancer and wanted to not permanently lose her spinal flexibility. So she and her mum opted for a combination of scoliosis exercises and bracing at the ScoliCare Clinic Sydney. She ...diligently stuck to her treatment routine, and found ways to stay positive throughout. As a result, her scoliosis is now reduced to a degree that no longer requires surgery. Nora-Lee will be online with Dr Juan to talk about her experience and advice for anyone going through the same journey. 19.01.2022 Is Scoliosis a cause of Pain? It might seem obvious that a bent or twisted spine would be painful, right! However doctors and other health professionals are taught that scoliosis (a spine that is twisted) is usually not painful. Until recently there has not been much research into the link between scoliosis and pain. Researchers from Canada have now discovered that in fact it is common for teenagers with scoliosis to suffer from mild, chronic pain and that the pain gets wo...rse the bigger the curve in the spine gets . This research exposes a common myth that scoliosis is not associated with pain. Their results are supported by further research from the United Kingdom which found that even children with small curves had more days off school and were more likely to avoid activities that caused their pain. Despite this new research it is still common for children with scoliosis complaining of pain to be told it is just growing pains and not to worry about it. This is a problem because if their pain is not taken seriously and it is left untreated then the child continues to suffer. On the bright side, the Canadian research found that those children that were treated for their scoliosis had less pain. Read More here: https://www.scolicare.com/scoliosis-a-cause-of-pain/

17.01.2022 ScoliCare would like to thank SOSORT for running such a great online event today. To see and hear the president of Society on Scoliosis Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Treatment (SOSORT) Dr. Parent and president of the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS) Dr. Sponseller give such complementary talks about the role of non-surgical scoliosis treatment was inspiring. The 8 award papers were fantastic and highlighted the growing body of evidence behind non-surgical scoliosis treatment and the innovations occurring in the field. If you missed the event you can register with SOSORT and watch the recording here www.sosort2020.com and you can also access the rest of the on-demand content accepted to the conference.
16.01.2022 For someone living with scoliosis, they might sometimes feel like they are dealing with a condition no-one else can relate to, or understand. Its commonly believed that scoliosis only affects 2-4% of the population, but this isnt exactly true. Its reported that scoliosis is found in 2-4% of the adolescent population, but when ScoliCare reviewed the published literature about adults with scoliosis, we found that scoliosis is prevalent in approximately 38% of adults (over 40...) too! So the number of people with scoliosis is a lot larger than many would believe. Its quite possible that your friend, your neighbour, or even your favourite celebrity or sports person might also live with scoliosis and deals with issues just like you. From models to athletes, you might be surprised by some famous people with scoliosis. We will be posting over the next few weeks a selection of people who have a known scoliosis. First up is Usain Bolt! Its hard to believe that the fastest man on earth has scoliosis! Olympian Usain Bolt was born with scoliosis, curving his spine to the right and making his right leg half an inch shorter than his left. Its been said that Bolt has adjusted his stride to accommodate the effects of his scoliosis. In the Dec. 12, 2011 issue of ESPN The Magazine, Bolt describes how scoliosis affects his training: When I was younger it wasnt really a problem. But you grow and it gets worse. My spines really curved bad. But if I keep my core and back strong, the scoliosis does not really bother me. So, I dont have to worry about it as long as I work hard. The early part of my career, when we did not really know much about it, it really hampered me because I got injured every year.
16.01.2022 We are Live with Dr Mike Selby, a scoliosis surgeon in South Australia!
16.01.2022 We have launched Telehealth. An initiative to ensure patients can continue to receive care from the safety and comfort of their own home. This is especially important giving the current restrictions with Covid-19. Through our Telehealth software we arrange a consultation between the clinician and patient. The clinicians can still review xrays and then video call and discuss the case with a patient.... Our physios can also conduct rehab classes through Telehealth! To find out more pop us a message or call us on 1300 650 205.

14.01.2022 Our Exercise Physiologists have put together a video demonstrating some spinal mobility stretches to help improve posture. Especially beneficial to those sitting at a desk all day but also ideal for those working from home or those who dont move too much throughout the day. These simple and easy to do stretches are all in either a seated, standing or lying position and can help with back stiffness. However, while they are suitable for almost everyone please dont attempt if ...you currently have acute back pain! It is important to note - these are general strength exercises and dont take into account specific conditions. If you wish for more specific advice please come see us at one of the ScoliCare clinics. 12.01.2022 We have two brace design competition winners! We simply couldn't decide on which design we loved more as both had their own special story behind them. In the end we decided to have two winners! Our first winner was Jessica Hobbs who loves music and explained her design - "When I first heard about this competition, I started thinking about some ideas. The first thing that came to my head was music, because I absolutely love music. I listen to it a lot and I play lots of instru...ments, I have found that this has really helped me through my scoliosis journey. As time went by, I started to second guess my design, as music is not for everyone. But something kept telling me to draw it. As I was drawing it, I got thinking of how all these music notes remind me of having scoliosis. When reading music its starts off really hard, just like when you get your first brace, it can really seem like a really dark time for some, but as you go through the ups and downs it gets a bit brighter and easier as you know your brace is supporting your scoliosis. Just like this drawing, my music notes start off dark and then finish off bright. It can be the same when you listen to a song or play an instrument, when it starts, you may have your assumptions whether or not you like it, but as the song plays you will like parts of it, others you will not, this can be the same with scoliosis when you really think about it. So, the reason why I chose this design is not because I necessarily love music, but it is to remind everyone it will be OK. No matter how dark things may seem, there always is a light at the end of the tunnel. :) " Our second winner was Bronte O'Shannessy who beautifully wrote about her design - "Koi fish are capable of adapting to many climates and conditions and symbolise strength. Koi fish show great determination, dedication, perseverance & success. Their spine is a feature of the way they navigate their lives." These two designs will now be sent to our graphic design team to be converted into designs for ScoliCare's 3D custom braces, so other patients will be able to choose them for their own brace design. Massive congratulations to both winners and thanks to everyone who participated in the competition!

05.01.2022 Part of our series of famous people who have/had a Scoliosis. Next up is Kurt Cobain! Kurt Cobain is best known as the lead singer of grunge band Nirvana. Diagnosed with a curve in his teenage years, he spoke of his scoliosis as inspiration for his music: I have scoliosis. I had minor scoliosis in junior high, and since Ive been playing guitar ever since, the weight of the guitar has made my back grow in this curvature. [scoliosis] gives me a back pain all the time. That r...eally adds to the pain in our music." While the weight of the guitar almost certainly didnt cause his Scoliosis, it may have aggravated the condition and contributed to the pain he was feeling as a result.

03.01.2022 Jessica Lesslie recently shared her Scoliosis story with her school to help raise awareness of the disease during Scoliosis Awareness Month. Jessica was diagnosed with a Scoliosis at 13 years of age and had to wear a brace for two years to prevent the curve from worsening. While initially finding it quite a struggle Jessica learned some very valuable life lessons and turned the whole experience into something positive. We are very proud of Jessica and are delighted to be able... to share her story which you can read in full here: http://ow.ly/gZVl50AhboS
