16.01.2022 Happy Tartan Day! Did you know that the Aberdeen Highland Games presented the Upper Hunter with its own official tartan in 2019 to mark the 20th anniversary of... the Games in Aberdeen? The tartan is based on Campbell of Breadalbane but tells the story of the Upper Hunter valley. -Green is for the lands where lucerne supports the dairy, beef and equine industries -Blue is the waters of the Hunter and Goulbourn river valleys. -White is the milk and cream that flowed from the valley. -Black is the black coal seams. -Purple is the grapes that become wine -Yellow is the golden cereal and canola crops and wool clips. -Red represents the Light Horse Troops and their horses from the Upper Hunter, who served overseas in World War I. The Upper Hunter tartan is available in different items to purchase at the Scone Visitor Information and Horse Centre. 16.01.2022 Australias only naturally burning coal seam Burning Mountain is a rare phenomenon a coal seam, buried 30 metres underground, which has been burning for at least 5,500 years, some say over 15,000 years. The experience is a pleasantly energetic walk of 4 km (return) through bush land which becomes increasingly bare and barren the closer the visitor gets to the smoking vent. It is a true rarity and an opportunity to experience the hills at the northern edge of the Hunter Valley district.

16.01.2022 All Upper Hunter courses - including Aberdeen, Merriwa, Murrurundi, Scone, Denman, Muswellbrook and Singleton - shut until further notice

06.01.2022 ATTENTION: IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR RESIDENTS OF SCONE AND MURRURUNDI 13 March 2020 Upper Hunter Shire Council - Scone Water Supply and Murrurundi Water Suppl...y Boil Water Alert Poor raw water quality The recent heavy rainfall in the Glenbawn Dam catchment has caused problems with effective water treatment making drinking water in the Scone water supply system and the Murrurundi water supply system potentially unsafe. Water supplied to Aberdeen, Merriwa and Cassilis is unaffected. Water used for drinking or food preparation should be brought to a rolling boil to make it safe. Kettles with automatic shut off switches can do this. Water should then be allowed to cool and stored in a clean container with a lid and refrigerated. Bottled water or cool boiled water should be used for drinking, washing uncooked food (e.g. salad vegetables and fruit), making ice, cleaning teeth, gargling and pets drinking water. Dishes should be washed in hot soapy water or in a dishwasher. Children should take bottled water or cool boiled water to school. If you cannot boil the water, unscented household bleach (containing 4% 5% available chlorine) may be used. Add 2 drops of bleach to 1 litre of water (or 4 drops if the water is cloudy), mix well, and allow to stand for 30 minutes before use. Upper Hunter Shire Council is working to fix the problem. This advice should be followed until further notice. The NSW Health website also includes special considerations for: -Schools and childcare centres https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/environm//Pages/schools.aspx - Commercial establishments serving food or drinks https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/enviro//Pages/foodfacts.aspx - Using water header tanks https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/envir//Pages/watertanks.aspx -Swimming pools and spas https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/environment//Pages/pools.aspx
